I give this movie all the credit in the world for not making Gwen Stacy a damsel in distress, although they came pretty close. That being said there are some things I didn't like in the movie but all of the 'just so happens' are not too outlandish: it is because Richard Parker works on the cross-species whatever that Peter gets his powers and he is hired to work for Norman with Connors who is looking to grow a new arm; it is mostly centered around Richard Parker and the only real 'just so happens' is Gwen working for Dr. Connors. I can understand where you might be coming from Bob but I personally disagree with your assessment.

Also, teen romance crap? Seriously? Pass.
Okay. I've had enough of this. As I said, I've been reading Spider-man comics for 20 years and let me just say that J. Jonah Jameson is the WORST character in the series. Seriously, he is one dimension to a point where he is just plain predictable to a point of annoyance. He does -everything- in his power to screw over anyone actually trying to help and never does a single thing actually meaningful or useful with himself.

Do you know why J.J hates Spider-man? Because he is jealous of him. Seriously, anyone who's picked up a Spider-man comic would know this. In the early part of The Amazing Spider-man, J.J admits right out that the reason he hates Spider-man isn't because he has a mask on, it's the fact that he helps people and asks for nothing in return, and it makes him feel like less of a person because he's never accomplished anything of the sort or would never try to.

Even after Peter Parker revealed himself publicly, Peter call J.J out on it and he admitted he was right later. He is a petty, self centered, piece of one dimensional sad excuse for a character and it is hard to see why people even like him so much. Past that, you want to know why he sucks so badly in the original trilogy of Spider-man movies? His reasoning for disliking Spider-Man was never stated. He was just a hateful little jerk who couldn't grow up. They failed at even establishing why a character is the way he is just like they did with Peter, Mary Jane, and Gwen in those movies. (They pulled off Eddie Brock correctly though. That was a surprise.)

He's not even doing it to sell papers, he just wants to slander because he'll feel better about himself. When he had a heart attack in The Amazing Spider-Man comics, I was seriously hoping he would die. So they can bury that one horse lined character who all he amounts to is childish biterness and "IT'S ALL SPIDER-MAN'S FAULT!" With all truth, he is the Brian Griffin of Spider-man series. A one dimensional, self centered character that thinks he knows better, but in reality is just a one trick pony of a hack.
Which is why I like him, I find that funny.

I saw this at the midnight showing in IMAX 3D and I honestly thought it was pretty good. I actually thought it was a pretty awesome movie. Admittedly, I know next to nothing about the character and backstory of Spiderman, and I'm not a particularly harsh critic when it comes to movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Comics and all three movies dealt with his romantic life.

I'm not trying to be hostile or judgmental, but when you guys say stuff like that, it makes me wonder if you even read the comics or watched the movies or even watched the cartoon series.

I agree, Jameson is an important part of the universe, but you don't need to cram in every single character into the first movie.
Most of the "Romantic plot" in the spider man stuff I've been exposed to/read/watched, has been later life stuff, or Peter not having the balls to do anything about it, then abruptly having to save people, I don't remember it ever being really important outside of longing, and then a strange comic arc where he and MJ were married... Might just be my memory fading.
The show and the first movie (and all of them that follow) deal with the teen romance stuff.

You guys seem to be remembering a different Peter Parker, or you are jumping on the "I was a fan all along" thing, which seems to be a trend now that "nerd culture" is considered cool.
Not so much the second as the first I think, I never claimed to be a super fan of spiderman, just that I've come into contact with it, and please stop refering to me as you guys, I know I seem to have multiple personalities but I am in fact one person.

When I said "Might just be my memory fading" I meant it, most of my experience with spiderman is from the old cartoon, and that's a while back yo.
What I was trying to say is that if a teenager getting involved romantically with another teenager is something that makes you immediately hate or avoid a movie, spiderman is something to avoid altogether.
and like 90% of every other movie ever, thing is it's not so much that teen romance itself is bad, it's just when the focus is more on teen romance than other meaningful hero development, or development of the relationship between the hero and villian, because as far as I'm concerned if I'm watching a movie based on a comic book hero I'd far rather see awesome villian/hero interaction than a hero turning emo over a girl, especially since when it comes to comic book heroes and lasting relationships, the girl will predictably become his foil later(being kidnapped, demanding his attention when it should be on a worse danger to more people, or revealing his identity accidentally or something), it's cut and paste and cut and paste again, only time this isn't the case is when she's got powers or abilities too.

I will put spiderman 2 into a showcase of a good balance here, since we're talking spiderman. Sure he had his relationship qualms, but the movie also had a good deal of focus on developing a relationship of sorts between peter and doc oc. and although peter did get emotional, he was always like that, it's just part of his coming of age/hero identity crisis journey, he doesn't flip flop and change how he is, as peter parker he's your standard wussy gangly late teen given powers, and shown that he has to man the fuck up and make a stand against all the bastards out there intent on killing stealing and destroying what isn't there. This idealism was passed on to him by his uncle and shortly pounded home through his death, and this shows In how he reacts and relates to everyone, and he stays true to it, all the way through.

In other words it's all about balance, and from what I can tell from what Bob and a few of my friends have been saying, this spiderman movie is mainly just a peter parker teen romance movie, with action and a baddie crowbarred in, and the character family origin stuff is different now. Doesn't really interest me, if someone brings it over on DVD or something at some point I'll watch it, or like when it hits netflix, but theaters are expensive, and I'd rather not spend money on something I don't think I'll like all that much.

I grew up on the original movies so even after Spider-Man 3 I REALLY didn't want them remaking the movies, I wanted Spider-Man 4! The Lizard was the only part of this movie that made me want to see it, because he was one of my favorite villains and I myself always used him for my versions of Spider-Man's origin. I've heard from just about every review even the positive ones that Lizard wasn't handled well so.... Yeah, if someone invites me to go with them to the movie I'll go but other-wise I'll pass. I'll probably at least be renting the new game though, looks like it might be good, still love Spider-Man 2, was just playing it on my good ol' PS2 last week.

This was the cheapest looking superhero movie since the 90's. There are like 2 genuine action scenes and they are painfully simplistic and bland. I'll stick with the Raimi Movies. Also Gwen Stacy's dad was J.J.J without any of the charm.

Long Story Short: Movie Bob is overreacting, like he does.

This movie is way better than given credit for. No its not perfect. But its a solid summer flick and a decent Superhero movie. Its not Spider-man 3. Its miles ahead of that.

Seriously fellow escapists, this comment may be buried 10 pages in, but I hope someone hears this: This is worth watching.

I'm pretty sure he's hammering the point that this shouldn't be a movie. meaning this only exists so Sony can continue to have the rights asap.

No, Green Lantern on crack is worth watching. A movie that completely rewrites vital Spider-Man cannon, not so much. But hey, its only an opinion.

I did hear that if they did go with Spider-Man 4, the new villain would be Mystirio played by Bruce Campbell and all his cameo scenes in previous ones were all the same character. So all those in favour of Spider-Man 4 over this?

because people are sucker for Spiderman.

And this news [http://movies.yahoo.com/news/spidey-relaunches-tuesday-record-35m-153508646.html] doesn't help either if we want the Spiderman movie rights be return to Disney/Marvel.

Strangely enough, opinions about this Spider-Man movie appear to be all over the board. Some reviews say it's great, others say it's mediocre, and some (like Bob here) say it's piss-poor. I'm betting it'll wind up being just sort of okay, doing some things right and others wrong. I'll wind up seeing it myself, if only because I like Spider-Man.
I've noticed that too!

I'm somewhere in the between great and mediocre. I found this movie to be superior to the previous Spider-Man movies, and pretty good on its own. A lot of what Bob said appeared to be incorrect to me as well. However, that's just my opinion against his... I suppose. Not gonna get into the details.

If you wanted to see it, don't let Bob's review stop you.

Not even close to the minority. Don't take the chirps of idiot yes men all saying that because Bob said it was bad that they're not going to see it as "the majority." Everyone who saw this movie and then posted on here about it said they liked it and that Bob is talking about his ass, and everyone saying they agree with Bob also mentioned that they have not, and will not, see it. Their loss though, cuz this movie kicked ass.

Movie bob, i was in doubt when i saw you liked ted and tim and eric, i was in doubt when you some what warm to Avatar and the last airbender, two of the worst fuck films ever made, but my god, you nailed it this time!

if i could see you in person i would shake your and maby kiss you, but im not that type of guy so count your blessings.

fuck you sony for ruining a possibility with the avengers, and im keeping a close fuck eye on you fox and your x-men series, because it needs to stay good like first class or id be pissed that Scarlette johanson and ryan rynolds (ex husband and wife) couldnt have the most unintentionally hilarious scene on film as black widow and deadpool.....you watch your ass buddies.

*note, its actually looking like deadpool will be awesome since it has a good director, might be rated R and will be written by the writters of zombieland.

To be fair...all joking aside...

I saw the movie last night and it's not THAT bad of a movie, certainly not as bad as Bob made it out to be, but I still didn't like it...

I did like that they made Gwen Stacey Peter's girlfriend, instead of shoehorning her in to create some REALLY LAME love triangle...and they will get +100 bonus points if they follow through with the storyline and make her get killed by the Green Goblin...

Martin Sheen and Dennis Leary are always awesome and still are here...and I adore Emma Stone...

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker is a WAY better casting than Toby was...but I do agree with Bob that it seemed like they didn't know what they wanted him to be. I will say that I liked that they actually made him very smart...because Peter Parker is...and it was very nice to hear Spidey actually make smartass remarks, something the older spidey movies did very little of/not at all...

Still, overall I just didn't care for this movie at all...probably because i'm a huge Spider-man nerd...

After reading through this thread, I can understand people being upset with some of the things people are saying in this thread...and a lot of people are probably just jumping on the bandwagon...and they really should see it for themselves. I can't get upset about this movie making tons of money because it would have done that anyways, unless it was universally panned by critics...and people STILL would go see it...

It all comes down to difference of opinion. If you liked the movie, more power to you. If you are like me and didn't like it, that's fine too. A lot of people and critics seem to love Prometheus, while I thought it was the stupidest movie i've ever seen AND the pinnacle of character/story stupidity...

See the movie for yourself...and make the decision on your own...

...i'm still sad that we won't get Spider-man in the glorious Marvel Movie-verse...

I didn't like the movie but I didn't hate it either, it's just that they changed his whole origin story and remove the core of the Spiderman mythos.

I'm with Bob with this that the Marvel movies must be made by Marvel Studios because they are the only few who somehow understand the right direction on how their properties should be put on film.

You're right. I'm pretty sure two years from now no one is gonna remember something special with this movie other than The unnecessary Spiderman reboot.

When you think about it, isn't that the fate Clash of the Titans(2010) suffered if you go back and asked the people who watched it after a year?

Whenever someone asks me why I think your opinion should be taken with a grain of salt half the time, I'll point em to this video. You've been against this movie since before anything got announced besides that it's going to happen. And it shows. Even if this movie was The Dark Knight levels of good, you'd probably still say it was bad.
The problem with when Bob does this sort of stuff, he goes into into it with a self-fulfilling prophecy. If he says it's going to suck before he sees it, he will be on the lookout for suck and simply miss all the good. Which is why I tend to avoid his opinion on movies that he has, time and time again, bashed before release.

Otherwise, when he does stuff more neutrally, a lot of his reviews have either spurned me off of terrible movies or gotten me interested in stuff I hadn't even heard about.
