Well I am wondering why we need more ads. Sure, there were a few 15-30 second ones before, but now we have the publishers club. Thats 10-20 bucks a person, and it looks like roughly a third of the active forum posters are in it. I'm not privy to financials on the escapist, but why do we need more ads when there's a large new vein of revenue coming in?
It is their way of trying to bully everyone else into paying for the Publishers' Club or whatever it's called.
No it's not. It's their way of maximizing revenue and making the largest profit possible. You know, the whole goal of every profit seeking company on the planet.

Its that they exist. Which can be solved by not looking at them. Common sense.
Their existence can be erased by ignoring them, can it? Doesn't sound like common sense to me.
Now you're just being pesky.

I believe the problem that he has is that the adverts exist, and therefore bother him.

When I'm watching TV and a commercial pops up, I change the channel. The commercial still exists, but it no longer bothers me.

The OPs concern is that he doesn't want to watch the ads. And I told him he doesn't have to.

Ohh wait, common sense doesn't exists on the internet. I'm sorry.
If you had used your common sense you would have realised from the OP that it is not the content of the adverts that annoys him.

It's entirely optional - you either think it's worth the money, or you don't. We don't deny you anything for not joining, we leave it entirely up to your own choice. That's bullying?

Ads are a necessary evil of the online space. Bandwidth costs bucks, and it has to be paid for somehow. It would be fantastic if we suddenly hit the lottery or discovered oil beneath the conference room or something, but until that glorious day, we have to make money as best we can so that we can keep The Escapist going. And that means, more than anything else, ads. Yes, the Pub Club helps, but it far from settles the matter.

Now you're just being difficult for the sake of it. It is common sense to simply ignore adverts. You can even do it whilst looking straight at them. Don't you watch TV?
... No.

So you disagree that they have in mind even further fincancial gain that may be reaped from those so irritated by the excessive advertising that they might be induced to buy into the subscription...? Maximum profit possible and all...

Please... don't misunderstand me - I know it's entirely optional. It just seems a little coincidental to me that suddenly, with the arrival of the new Publishers' Club, comes what seems to me a great increase in the number of adverts normal users have to endure. Deny it if you like, but I think it's the Escapist's way of making the regular account far more disagreeable than it used to be in an attempt to garner more subscribers.

That's all I meant. Nothing more, nothing less.

But you're confusing two things: First you say it's the very existence of these adverts that annoys him, then you say in the same post that what irks him is the fact that he has to watch them. The two are very different indeed.

I took the OP to mean the former, which is why I do not believe looking away to be a satisfactory solution, not least because looking away would mean wasting your own time while doing it.

Ummm get over it, ads are a fact of life, unless you want to pay the Escapist Staff yourself. Honestly its ten seconds of your precious life to watch a free video.
Swing and a miss.

The reason I was complaining is because it was over a minute long. Then on the next video I went to watch it was being repeated.

Firefox gets rid of those ads for free. You never have to see stuff like that anywhere.
