You answered your own question there. The community is part of what makes a game good or bad especially when you rely on the multiplayer as the big attraction for people.

I just think that they are really good games but are over-rated due to the polish they have.

If an FPS isn't PC based and made by Valve, the Escapist will have a hard time warming to it.
Bulletstorm? Duke Nukem? As far as I can see, The Escapist judges everything by its merits.

Halo 3 and reach are two of my favourite games of all time.

The story is poo, the combat is stupid and allot of the community is full off retards, but the game is so much fun to play. Allot of people (on this site especially) snub it because it isn?t a massive leap in gaming innovation, its too mainstream for the cool crowd, the combat is poo and they haven?t got any friends to play it with. However, I have had more fun on custom games on custom maps than any other game. I have been known to snub the pub to stay in and play custom games, co-op campaign and even multi player with friends

Also, in all honesty Halo has probably the friendliest fan base on X box live. On CoD, homefront, gears, unreal you name it ,people are either silent, in a party, or being a knob end. Halo matchmaking is full of mostly non-serious, talkative, maybe a bit immature, but friendly people of all ages, who just want to enjoy the madness of the game. I think its the shit combat which actually gives the games this atmosphere. There is such a fine margin for error on CoD and other realistic shooters, that it becomes too much about competition and less about fun.

I mainly play CoD for sport, and find it enjoyable, but its too serious and everyone is always too busy trying to enlarge their internet cocks. Seriously other than my friends in my party, I don?t think anyone on CoD has said "nice kill" or Your pretty good at this" its always " your a fucking n00b and not nearly as good as me, I know you got 33 kills to 6 deaths and I got 13 to 18 but I was quick scooping and you used the M4A1 Which is a n00b Gun"

Say what you will about halo, but Iv met 80% of my friends list on that game.

Call of Duty was good until Modern Warfare 2. That one started the with the shitty console ports and greediness of Activision. Not to mention the game still sucked on PS3 even. Halo, well, it was never that great. It was always just your mediocre shooter with shields that ruined multiplayer (and probably what led to all multiplayer being dumbed-down), and zero reply value for single player. The xbox players seem to treat it like a gift from god, which makes it horrible because it doesn't live up to half the hype it gets.
Zero replay value, SHIT! have I been doing it wrong?

Maybe have been me then. Halo 1 I never even finished. Gotta say, the Library was the only level in a game that was so horrid it made me quit the entire game and never play it again. Halo 2, well... the 5 minutes on Earth was about the only fun part. The rest, I don't have a 360.
I still dont get why people hate the library so much, It was fine for me!
Although I was on normal and had heard a lot about it so was expecting hell.
I just couldn't take going through the same hallways fighting the same enemies for that long, which amazes me. Grinding for hours in a cave in Final Fantasy VII never bothered me as much as that level did.

They never build on anything that they have. Just churn out the same crap with one or two added features at best.

It was slightly less relevant for Halo until that piece of shit about the marines who drop down in those pods that just amounted to a Halo 3 expansion sequel, that earned it full fledged disgust.
The fact that you can't even call the game's protagonists as they're classified (It's in the title!) shows that you don't know what you're talking about.

Umm... L4D2 and TF2 sucked. As for amazing non-Valve FPS games:
Bulletstorm
Painkiller
NecroVisioN
BioShock
Fallout 3
Borderlands
I could go on for a while...

I don't mind Halo as much as CoD, because CoD is basically becoming madden
it just reskins everything, slaps on a $60 price tag and sells 30 million units, which could have gone to a much better game with more innovation
also, hearing 9 year olds yelling the n-word at the top of their lungs is not a way for me to relax, which is the main reason that I and most people play videogames

Well I for one like both Halo and CoD and I don't care that it's popular to hate them.

I do certainly see the flaws in them. CoD is re-released every year with a new coat of paint and some gimmick to get people all worked up about it. I want the CoD franchise to die so we can have some new fresh concepts in games. But! I still play and enjoy Modern Warfare 2. You know why? It's just damn fun! It controls smoothly, there's a lot of different ways to go about shooting dudes and it just simply works. Sure it's not very innovative and the community sucks big time. (It is a little bit better on the PC though) But I still play it, call a few buddies, grab my M4 and grenade launcher and simply have a blast.

Actually, the whiny 12 year olds who scream "fagg0ts" each time you kill them make up 25% of the fun when I play with some mates. Because they are so extremely easy to agitate and they are prone to fits of incoherent swearing and rage quitting. Trolling them is so satisfying.

COD blackops isn't bad as a game, however a flatmate that plays it 14 hours a day very loudly with paper thin walls, its driven me to hate it lol.

I can only speak for myself. It's rare enough that I play shooters at all, but when I do, I tend to go for things that either have a strong story-element or that somehow peaked my interest otherwise. I tried both Halo (1) and one of the many iterations of CoD in the past, and found myself uninterested to continue onward with them.

So, to be clear: I don't hate either Halo or CoD, however, they're just not for me.

Meh I love both Halo and the COD series and I don't really give a shit if people call me a fangirl over it. I enjoy them, I'm certainly not "fangirl" for them.

But don't get me wrong, I'm not so blind that I can't see they are both made by money grabbing corporations ;) x

see i think its a mix of fanbase (who are 85% dickweeds, 14% mute and 1% ok people) and the fact that the games are just not really interesting. i mean unless you worship halo and know all the details it comes off as being well yeah "power rangers in space with guns" and CoD well... its a WW2 shooter i mean you can close your eyes and bump into a dozen of those things. over all both can be described as "same old same old and defended with a passion and bad spelling"

I never played Halo, so I am neutral towards it.

CoD on the other hand. The games basically hate Russia, and I happen to be Russian.
Also the gameplay is not-as-stellar as it's supposed to be considering the sales.

Halo: ODST.

That took me three seconds to find with google, why would you base your entire reply on something so trivial?

I like Halo because it's not just about shooting people when they pop out of cover. As far as I can tell, that's something it has over just about every game out there these days.

I hate CoD because it tries too hard to be realistic, and it forgets that games are supposed to be fun. People like running up to enemies, dodging their bullets, then delivering an uppercut that sends everyone flying.

Changes made to the FPS genre, for me... I liked shooters in the late 90s/early 2000s. I liked running at 60mph, carrying 700 guns and being able to turn 180 degrees in a few hundredths of a second while also being able to aim at and hit a dime perched on a tower 400 meters away while falling off a cliff.

FPSes are boring, nowadays... and most of the blame can be laid at the feet of Halo. Call of Duty has just followed trends set by other franchises. Sort of a non-entity in my eyes.

I guess you could call me a fan of both. I have no problem with either of them, aside from COD's storyline appearing as if it was directed by Michael Bay. Halo is fun too I guess.

Apart from the fact the games are released too frequently and the communities are full of people that hate gamers, I actually have no problem.

I just think TimeSplitters ruined other FPSs for me.
