I never actually considered mousepads to be important til I got this. It's so soft and friction less and works with the mouse perfectly. Plus it only cost like $20.

I went optical in 1999 and never looked back...

(EDIT: Actually, I do have a padded gel pad on the desk with my gaming rigs - I like the wrist rest. Doesn't need the pad itself, though.)
