Games that want to tell stories are wasting the players time. Linear expository and shallow. Want a story? read a book. Want a game? Well thats something else entirely. The story comes from your experience playing the game, and that can' tbe scripted.
They are not wasting my time. I love a game that tells a great story. Most of the games I buy are because I think the game has a good or interesting story. The main reason I bought Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, KOTOR, and Bioshock was because I wanted to experience the stories the games had.
On Topic: If romance between two characters helps to add character development than I am not bothered by it. I am happy that Bioware lets us choose who we want to romance in their games.
