I've been a huge fan of Evangelion and still say it's one of the most culturally important works in anime, but it is always refreshing to see great comics take the piss out of it. Love all of these.

The pillows though, they'd get made regardless of what the show was about.

Oddly enough, Evangelion is one of the well regarded animes I haven't watched yet. I probably should.

Shinji's life blows, but he reacts to that by being an unlikable spineless moron, and not by rising to the occasion like, say, Simon from Gurren Lagann (whose life sucks more, arguably, because he lives underground and has to dig tunnels with a fucking HAND DRILL).

EVA in general had a fucked up nonsensical plot that ultimately ends up going to a Gainax mindfuck ending. Some people thought it was deep, other that it was fucking idiotic. I turned off the series at ep 1 because I fucking hated Shinji. That the series went on to kill the other, more likable characters an end in a stupid wau proved me right for tuning out.

But, each to his own.
See, I think this is why I don't get the hate for it. I don't have an instant adverse reaction to "unlikable" characters, which apparently, lots of people do. I like to see them learn and change (or crash and burn), and it's very easy for me to empathize with even characters who do despicable things, if they aren't just pure evil or do shit solely because they're douches.

It does weird me out that so many nerds who, as a general rule tend to like deconstructions, turned on Evangelion, as it's just going "Oh, you want a show about kids who fight monsters in giant robots? Well, I'll give you that, but let's also show you that being a child soldier fucking blows, and have some fucked up reasons why it needs to be children, since no group of good people would ever force children to fight a war and be mankind's last hope." I figure people would appreciate the realism, but I guess a lot of people just want vapid escapism. (There's nothing wrong with vapid escapism, it just bothers me that people tend to get, like, angry whenever they're confronted with something that actually wants to make a point, or say something besides "Look at this fucking cool shit! That's fucking awesome!". When people can't appreciate something that's good, even if they don't like it, it bothers me. /endrant.)

Though, as an existentialist, watching Shinji take so damn long to realize what I think of as truths about life as a human being got more than a bit tedious. I can only imagine how much it would suck if you actively hated him, and it'd be even worse if you didn't like/believe/understand the philosophy the show was getting at towards the end. But it's clear they were doing it for the art to a degree, so I stand behind it, as there aren't enough shows that do that.

Merchandizing, and the fact that the show's director said outright that a lot of the symbolism was intentionally shallow aside, it is still clear that you just don't get it.

Evangellion is a reaction to the legions of shows that have some protagonist male who leaps out of the womb with complete agency and a perfect handle on his life and where he's going with utter immunity to any wrong doing or having anything actually bad happen to them because plot armor. Shinji's thrown into an impossible situation where he can't say no or else he's a massive asshole, and if he goes along with it he's just doing the most agonizing thing possible, and gets to do it over and over, and the people who he protects because of it will just resent the shit out of him because he didn't get everything perfect.

And the only reason he even survives half the time is completely outside of his own ability or power. In the mean time every time his robot takes a blade to the head, gets an arm ripped off, or gets decapitated, he's feeling every second of it. The character makes perfect sense, he's just not someone immediately likeable. God forbid.

No, the show isn't really that deep. Yes, you still don't get it, and that's pretty sad because the show's pretty shallow. It just has a lot to say about a lot of things.

The original TV series was very well done.

Not going to comment on whether it's "meaningful", but it was a great piece of well told fiction.

Didn't watch the new movies past the first one after I found out that they changed Asuka's characterisation.

I don't get it.

Edited for content: I mean I don't get the "pwnd" part. Doesn't every piece of art get the merchandise treatment?

the best part of all this advertising is everyone is assumed dead, or is in a ocean of LCL. except for kaji, cuz hes dead as fuck.

me personally, i'd keep the dorito bags around for the sentimental value. as for rei's tittie-wrist-resters, im better off without them. or who knows, they could work for all their worth. and that shaving ad is hilarious, but i couldnt tell you the difference between razors.

This, sort of. I'm also willing to wager that a lot of the marketing of Evangelion has more to do with Bandai/King Records/Revoltech/Sega and/or who else has licensing rights to the franchise than it does with Gainax/Anno. The show is both deeper than naysayers profess it is and shallower than supporters would like to think. The original Evangelion series deconstructed Super Robot tropes by infusing them with Real Robot elements and examining the real world implications there of, while also exploring the greater implications of common anime story elements at the time. That is what Gainax does and has always done. The fact that lots of anime that came afterwards borrowed heavily, or outright copied, from Evangelion doesn't detract from the point that the series was trying to make.

I can't help but feel that a lot people who criticize Evangelion for what it was trying to do are unaware of classic anime like Tetsujin 28, Giant Robo, Mazinger Z, Dancougar, Ideon, Yamato, Getta Robo, Combattler V,the other Go Nagai works, UC Gundam, etc...

Yet fans of Evangelion will insist to you that their show is ALL about its depth and how it has cultural influence. It's not the marketing that makes it bad, it's that people insist that the show above all others and how it wouldn't "stoop" to the lows of another series, yet they rush to the "well, everyone does it" defense as soon as someone points out that there's a Rei mousepad, not to mention the disturbing existence of body pillows for many of the female cast members.

Basically, it's hypocrisy. Their show resorts to all the same gimmicks as other shows and shouldn't be criticized for that, but at the same time it's also some kind of god-tier work of art that no other show can match. Can't have it both ways, kids.
Like who?

I have quite literally never seen anybody show the kind of attitude you describe. Most fans of the series are likely to be much more knowledgeable about the amount of merchandise available than those who are not. Unless you are suggesting that non-EVA fans spend more time looking up EVA merchandise than the people who actually like the show.

This strikes me as one of those made up arguments like all of the people who claim Valve fans keep talking about how amazing Gordon Freeman is as a character.

I find it funny how many people claim he doesn't get it, while simultaneously not getting the fact that Grey is a satirist and is not trying to make serious points. The irony is almost too much.

The fact that Grey has decided to make three comics about a 15 year old anime, despite the multitudes of relevant topics to choose from would suggest that he likes the show. Not forgetting that satire is often focused on things that are close to the heart. After all, if you have personal experience with something, it is a hell of a lot easier to make fun of it.

If this has already been posted then soz, but it's quite literally the funniest EVA "abridged" style parody that exists on the internet and pretty much sums up (plus goes a million yards further :p) than Erin's comic.

The shot-selection/timing isn't on-par with TeamFourStar but it is VERY close, I think I cracked a rib or two during these.

For anyone who thinks Evangelion to be "deep and meaningful" I recommend these reviews:

http://benthesage.com/reviews/aa/anime-abandon-the-end-of-evangelion/

Bennet White aka Sage, pointed out everything wrong with the series and the films far better than I or anyone else ever has, and did so in a very entertaining and insightful manner.

But don't mistake me, I own both the original series, the original two films and the newer two film remakes and look forward to the third. But deep and meaningful? ahhahahahah Eva is about giant robots and awkward yet hilarious anime teenager antics and little else to me, and that's all I need to enjoy it. But man that End of Eva movie, what a mind fuck.
Ugh BennetTheSage, literally the worst anime reviewer I can think of. He relies solely off of 'MUH NOSTALGIA' and has entry level, Adult Swim taste. Even worse than JesuOtaku and the fact that Berzerk is his favourite anime says alot about his credibility as a reviewer (I say that because Berzerk sucked donkey dick compared to the manga).

Hating a reviewer solely because their opinions are different to you're own, way to be original.
You clearly haven't watched many of his videos, Bennett is a very smart and insightful guy and while I don't always agree with him he always does a tremendously good job with his videos, as for his taste in humor, I think he's pretty darn funny but then comedy is as subjective as an opinion now isn't it.
