I've been a huge fan of Evangelion and still say it's one of the most culturally important works in anime, but it is always refreshing to see great comics take the piss out of it. Love all of these.

See, I think this is why I don't get the hate for it. I don't have an instant adverse reaction to "unlikable" characters, which apparently, lots of people do. I like to see them learn and change (or crash and burn), and it's very easy for me to empathize with even characters who do despicable things, if they aren't just pure evil or do shit solely because they're douches.Zero=Interrupt said:

Though, as an existentialist, watching Shinji take so damn long to realize what I think of as truths about life as a human being got more than a bit tedious. I can only imagine how much it would suck if you actively hated him, and it'd be even worse if you didn't like/believe/understand the philosophy the show was getting at towards the end. But it's clear they were doing it for the art to a degree, so I stand behind it, as there aren't enough shows that do that.
Merchandizing, and the fact that the show's director said outright that a lot of the symbolism was intentionally shallow aside, it is still clear that you just don't get it.Grey Carter said:

No, the show isn't really that deep. Yes, you still don't get it, and that's pretty sad because the show's pretty shallow. It just has a lot to say about a lot of things.

me personally, i'd keep the dorito bags around for the sentimental value. as for rei's tittie-wrist-resters, im better off without them. or who knows, they could work for all their worth. and that shaving ad is hilarious, but i couldnt tell you the difference between razors.

This, sort of. I'm also willing to wager that a lot of the marketing of Evangelion has more to do with Bandai/King Records/Revoltech/Sega and/or who else has licensing rights to the franchise than it does with Gainax/Anno. The show is both deeper than naysayers profess it is and shallower than supporters would like to think. The original Evangelion series deconstructed Super Robot tropes by infusing them with Real Robot elements and examining the real world implications there of, while also exploring the greater implications of common anime story elements at the time. That is what Gainax does and has always done. The fact that lots of anime that came afterwards borrowed heavily, or outright copied, from Evangelion doesn't detract from the point that the series was trying to make.acosn said:

Ugh BennetTheSage, literally the worst anime reviewer I can think of. He relies solely off of 'MUH NOSTALGIA' and has entry level, Adult Swim taste. Even worse than JesuOtaku and the fact that Berzerk is his favourite anime says alot about his credibility as a reviewer (I say that because Berzerk sucked donkey dick compared to the manga).LazyAza said:

You clearly haven't watched many of his videos, Bennett is a very smart and insightful guy and while I don't always agree with him he always does a tremendously good job with his videos, as for his taste in humor, I think he's pretty darn funny but then comedy is as subjective as an opinion now isn't it.
