People don't have to love Shinji. He's a fragile, broken, wreck of a child. I just find the jokes/scenarios suggesting that he should assert himself to be vastly inferior to the jokes that actually show Shinji as assertive and confident. The other characters' responses to his change in character are funnier than the pointing out the chagrin of the audience seeing Shinji flounder.

To all the people pointing out that merchandizing EVA doesnt make it bad, you're all right, of course. But did you miss the part where he said he wasn't going to take the high road and make a real argument? He basically highlighted the fact that he's just trolling in the first three panels...

Why EVA is bad has allready been stated so many times on the internet allready, that theres not really any point in going after it again - plus, as grey apparently knows, EVA fans are probably the easiest to troll on the entire net.

The problem is the people applauding this lack of argument as an argument.

I look at Evangelion fans and I see a bunch of obsessive, over-analyzing pseudo-intellectuals trying to justify their praise with made-up themes and symbols. I look at Evangelion-haters and I see a pack of elitist hipsters hating on something for being popular and trying to justify that hatred by elevating trash above Eva. And me?

As much as I love the series, the jokes about Shinji being a whiny ***** are completely deserved

I say if you can't make fun of something you love, you can't truly love it because you can't see it clearly. And Eva is easier to mock than most.

One of the biggest examples I can think of is that Pizza Hut the pizza place helped fund the creation of Code Geass, so when CC was obsessed with Pizza, she was always eating out of a Pizza Hut's box. For some strange reason though they removed the Pizza Hut's references from the actual animation when they imported it and dubed it in america. I have seen product placement in other Anime as well from time to time.

There are FCC rules about advertising in media, so when it aired in America the Pizza Hut logo may have had to have been removed. I don't know, however, I watched the DVDs, where the logos are in place, remaining true to the creators' original vision.

As I recall, the project of the original evangelion was pretty much The Producers. As in grabbing a crazy guy to write an anime they know will flop so they can rake in insurance or w/e. And all the religious references were just there to look cool. Then it turned out to be cool.....

I am reminded of this big book of religious interpretations of See Spot, See Spot Run, Run Spot Run....

If by "a crazy guy" you mean "co-founder of the company", and by "anime they know will flop so they can rake in insurance" you mean "due to the success of Evangelion, Gainax's treasurer committed tax fraud to the tune of several million dollars in an attempt to shore up the company's eternally shaky finances" (that's the only money-related thing I know about Eva, anyway), then yes, you're correct.

I watched Lain and GitS before I watched NGE, and by that time NGE looked relatively simple, almost looking like a pale imitation of what the others were trying to pull off, despite it coming before either of the anime series (although GitS was a manga at the time).

Don't say it, Dr. Cakey, don't say a damn thing against Ghost in the Shell or the other posters will eat you alive...

Evangelion gets a shit ton deeper when you start looking at it from different angles rather than just general mass entertainment. For example its probably one of the best aids you could have in studying/demonstrating psychological ideas and theories that doesn't involve a trip to the mental hospital or scarring dozens of students for life.

This is a troll move worthy, perhaps not to stand side by side with, but at least be in the shadow of End of Eva. Nice one guys. Not to mention, the number of times you've written comics about it (especially Erin's reaction at the end of the last one) seem to indicate that you at least like the series, so you seem to have some seriously myopic readers. But what else is new?

Though, to be honest, I'm really surprised at the general tone of discussion. Eva is deeper than most shows (anime or live action) but it's not that hard to understand, so I don't get why fans are constantly going "It's sooooooo deep, you just don't get it!" (and the people who are saying the "actually this is what it means/ is about" whenever anyone makes a joke) or haters saying "EVERYTHING IN IT MEANS NOTHING IT SUCKS I HATE IT!"

Like, damn people. I saw it all one time, and while the last 2 episodes were certainly a weird presentation, it didn't blow my mind with rage or pretentiousness. It's a show that was good enough to stand its (so far short) test of time is all.

Also, on the subject of Shinji, am I the only one who didn't wind up wanting fire him out of a cannon into the sun? I mean, he not admirable, but he's interesting and I just feel bad for the poor guy. His life kinda blows.

It is an Evangelion Ona-hole! Shaped like one of the characters body... no not shaped like one of the character's vaginas, literally shaped like one of the characters bodies. How you are supposed to use it remains a mystery to me given that it looks like it will hurt horribly given that the orange part is the part where you are supposed to stick it in.

Evangelion... I bought the DVDs when I was about 16 and watched the hell out of them. Back then, I thought it was an incredibly deep story with a character I could sympathize with. Now that I'm 28, I can't even stand to look at anything Eva related. The deep story just comes across as pretentious and the main character is a whiney brat.

I guess the difference was that I was able to relate to Shinji when I was a spoiled 16 year old who thought life was hard just because the girl I loved didn't love me back and my parents were divorced. Now I'm just a mildly disappointed adult that gets frustrated with teenage characters very quickly. Maybe that's why I don't get into JRPGs anymore. =/

I get that it was the 'low road' taken in this retort, but, sure there is a tonne of merchandising, and certainly the girls of Evangelion have become objects of male adoration, however these things have nothing to do with the story itself, just as the mountains of commercial dross which accompany any other pop culture phenomenon. I don't believe that the fans of Asuka and Rei et al necessarily engage with the Evangelion the TV, manga and movie series deeply; rather, it is the designs contained within.

Evangelion is built on Symbolism. The creepy cool cross-shaped explosions, for example. The main bridge area being called the "Central Dogma" is another. The enemies are called Angels are probably the most blatant. Heck, the main theme is called "Cruel Angel Thesis".

The kicker? Those were chosen because "I thought they were cool" at the time. Just fan boys being fan boys. Finding subtext where there is none is their specialty.
