I almost always listen to music when I play Starcraft: Brood War. But I keep the in-game audio audible. Using sound cues to keep things flowing helps a lot.

I'm still trying to figure out a good playlist for SCBW. I have a weird composition of dnb(mostly liquid, though I'm trying to balance it out), dubstep, ambient, *electronic and some neurofunk.

It helps my APM(sort of..). And I just enjoy listening to music so why not ^.^

With most single player games, except maybe Diablo-like games, I don't listen to music though.

*read: songs I'm not sure what to call.

I do especially when I'm playing a handheld console. I did manage to match up El Tango De Roxanne from Moulin Rouge with the scene where Monitor goes a lil kooky in Halo 3...I'll never be able to watch that cutscene again without laughing...XD

almost always. Megaman requires an infusion of Linkin Park (although I don't normally like them), Source Games need HIM or Breaking Benjamin-esque sounds, RTS cries out for glam/hair metal. The occasional classic rock tune is always well accepted too.

if there isn't a story or there aren't any cut scenes, or maybe i've played it a lot before, yeah. mostly because it gets my blood pumping if i'm listening to the right music, then i start to play better

I could only listen to music when I'm playing a sports game, like FIFA or Tiger Woods. In anything else it's just distracting.

Far cry 2- playing "circle of life" you know from the lion king, is both hilarious and epic
I need to try this.

As for myself, it depends on the game. Most games I'll use the in-game soundtrack or music. I generally listen to it when playing MMOs, Civilization V or Minecraft. Just stuff that doesn't require your complete attention really.

Also, for what its worth, this goes incredibly well with EVE Online, particularly on he mission of the same name. :D

If it's a game with little to no story like sports games for example then yeah I play music.

Blasting Marduk whilst playing L4D2 does the trick for me. Back in the days when I used to play WoW i always listened to music and shut the game sound off.

I do, sometimes, but I find if I listen to my favorite genre (Metal) I end up playing too aggressively and overextending, so I've stopped recently xD

Don't most people?

Mine varies on wot wot I am doing and when i'm doing it.

If I'm PVPing, it's usually metal music. If I'm killing time or PVEing, it's ....wotever I feel like listening to (Indie, electro, metal...w/e). If it's between 6 and 10 am Mon-Thurs, it's Howard Stern on Sirius!

That depends on the game after all. The game music and sounds can add a lot to the game, and how effective would a horror game be with some Blonde blasting away in the background? Some games however like Civ, sim, and a few other types are perfect for listening to some music.
