They lied when they said it was the "Final" Fantasy.
Was it really a lie at the time? When originally FF was going to be Squaresoft's last game before going out of business. That is until FF saved them from going bankrupt.
That's what I've always heard. It was the last chance to keep Square from going under and it turned out to be a hit. Thus, because name recognition, the Final Fantasy brand has stuck no matter what changes.

Hell, I find it amusing that Octopath Traveler is more like an old style Final Fantasy game then any game after FF9. It's just missing the name.
Naughty Dog also lied when they told us that It was The Last of Them
then they announced part 2...

they're gonna milk the shit out of TLOU just like Square does with FF

So you're saying we're getting 20+ Last of Us games? That seems like a bit of a stretch, TLoU doesn't have weeb appeal afterall.

Don't most of the kinder characters die or killed off in some fashion? I am not denying those characters are kind, but it's been so long I honestly don't remember. I'll just come out and say I find characters in RE more interesting than the LofUs. More power to any of you guys and gals if it's the opposite. I've should have been more clear, but Ellie I did not exactly have a problem with, but I was not that interested in her. Joel, while interesting as a protagonist, gave me the feeling "Whelp, I'm gonna be stuck with this douche bag for next 10-12 hours". Oh, zombie fatiuge was setting in at point when the Last Of Us first came out in 2013. I did not have a PS3 any way. This does not add a lot to my problems with the game, but something extra.
About half die.

Anyway, the characters don't feel out of place character wise for the setting they're in. And equally neither do the characters in Resident Evil. I mean, I'll probably agree that I like (original) Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy better than Joel or Ellie, but then I also like Rocko from Rocko's Modern Life better than Llewelyn Moss from No Country for Old Men. They're simpler characters that are easier and more fun to latch onto.

As for the zombie fatigue, I never cared for zombies much at all, and thankfully the zombies in TLoU are pretty secondary to the plot. Also, one of the few zombies in fiction that don't represent mankind's hubrise or greed. They didn't come about due to a science experiment gone wrong, a nuclear war, or trying to find a cure for cancer. It's just nature going 'I guess I'll do this now. Oh, it fucks over the human race, well tough shit.'

Maybe you?re being facetious and cynical, but it?s a thematic title alluding to what?s left of humanity in the game world. Also, speaking of milking franchises, who else knows it better than Nintendo, [https://segmentnext.com/2016/02/05/top-five-most-milked-video-game-franchises-of-all-time/amp/] with three of the all time five by far.

As far as I know, that's just a myth. In reality the game was going to be called Fighting Fantasy, but because of copyright issues (the name was already taken by a tabletop game) they went for the next F-word that they could come with.

Started out with me genuinely fascinated with how I knew so much about Final Fantasy VII, down to every character's name and arc, without ever having played it. Thing is it's boring to just list down every feature you know about a game you've never played. I know more about Dark Souls than "it's a really hard game". I know about the estus flask and the bonfires and the boss souls and guarding/parrying and how the world is dying and every resets when you do so you're essentially creating shortcuts to get to the boss at the end of a series of Groundhog Days. It's funnier to make a joke about it, especially if there's truth to it.

I didn't really think most people were being particularly nasty in their remarks. Sure, a fair bit of snark back and forth but I kinda assumed that was the point.

Like how I've played MGS4 and I'll gladly joke about how you can sum up a large amount of the game's plot as "NANOMACHINES, Son". I could go a little further and sum up MGSV as "Magical Parasites/She breathes through her skin".

Or Dark Souls with the "Git Gud" meme that's either a joke or deadly serious depending on which DS fans you talk to.

Did not matter what the zombies represented,I'd still have fatigue regardless. The zombies could have been a symbolism for an STD epidemic and my reaction would have been the same. UUuhhh, another zombie game. Or in Joe's case...

And there is still an air of human are bastards theme in the game, just not as anvil heavy or obvious. Unlike some zombie media or certain anime.

This, I didn't think we were being "snide" to begin with.
Even if I haven't played any of them, I wouldn't be joking about these games if I didn't have some affection for the way they've indelebly burrowed their way into pop culture to the point they've grown beyond the act of having to play them to know them.

Best I can tell, the TLOU zombies are basically a pandemic stand-in, though in this case a fungus rather then a virus. Which makes it wierd that the initial outbreak seems to happen everywhere at the same time, or at least that's one the prologue makes it look like. Viruses, let alone fungi, don't move that fast.

But the rest of it is basically humans being bastards(at least that's what I took away) since most of the people you run into are basically assholes, fireflies included. The people at the dam were the only decent people you seem to run into as a group. Makes it hard to really want to save humanity by the end considering.

Kind of like Dark Souls, but it's feudal Japan instead of medieval european gothic, so you're a samurai/ronin/ninja or something, and your enemies are other samurai/ronin/ninja, oni and other yokai from Japanese folklore. I'm assuming the plot has something to do with revenge.

Total War: Three Kingdoms
It's a strategy game about the wars between the Wu, Shu and Wei kingdoms in their respective bids to unite China under one rule. There's a fuckton of warlods, factions, political intrigue and yet more betrayals involved. Eh, euhm, Lu Bu, Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Dong Zhuo, Sun Jian, Zhuge Liang.

Ark: Survival Evolved
It's another one of those survival games where you start out punching trees to gather resources for crafting, except this one has dinosaurs that you can eventually tame, train, armor, and then ride into battle against other people with their own battle titans.

So, how close am i?

While it's a pandemic, it never really comes across as such, because after the 20 year time gap things have become relatively dormant. There's no scenes of an infection wiping out a community for example. And other than certain underground passages filled with spores there's no areas that feel desease ridden. That's why the running theme of the game, even with the zombies, is man vs. nature. The visual of human beings being taken over by plants just as the buildings and infrastructure is being taken over by plants. It gives it this sense of mankind slowly going extinct and its history slowly disintegrating, and the universe being completely indifferent towards it. It's more melancholic than horrorfic.

But the rest of it is basically humans being bastards(at least that's what I took away) since most of the people you run into are basically assholes, fireflies included. While that's true there's more beneath the surface. The game does an excellent job peppering in context to most of these situations, like how the bandits in Pittsburgh came to be. Even David's community aren't just crazy cannibals, and are more the result of desperate people putting their faith in a shady leader, which you even hear some of them questioning.

With the Fireflies the game needed to tweek some of its dialoge at the hospital, because as it is it feels written to get your murder buzz going. However you're not supposed to want to save humanity in the end anyway. Just as the zombie plague is secondary to the plot of the game, the fate of humanity is secondary to the conclusion of the game. And it's more about Joel having become delusional and psychotically possesive of Ellie, and Ellie having her hope that things can change for the better crushed.

Dark Souls
It has no plot that anyone seems to care about ever discussing, and is only famous for being really hard.
The player community like pain and frustration, and also like trolling each other with notes they can leave on the ground, that frequently get you killed, or make you waste time smashing your face into a wall trying to roll through it as a "secret door".
Oh and also "Praise the Sun", no clue to the context of that, people just say it.

Kingdom Hearts
It's Disney meets JRPG stuff, and a kid uses a key as a buster sword, and apparently the games are super convoluted when it comes to their story.

Persona Series
It's apparently really popular, seems to mostly be about the drama between the characters, though I think there is actually a game in there somewhere? *shrugs* That stuff never gets discussed.
Also apparently some of the characters are some variant on the LGBTQ spectrum, which I think surprised some people? Or maybe just made it more popular, it gets fuzzy on that subject.

Gears of War
Really thick, meaty people fighting bugs. One guy is constantly looking for his wife who went missing years ago.

Fortnite
Colorful meat puppets run around in ways, and doing things that remind me of Borderlands meets Saints Row, basically just being weird and shit wearing ridiculous outfits. Which apparently gets all the money in the world.

From what I've seen of it, a one-sentence description might be "dinosaur-themed griefing simulator".

Akshewly, Dark Souls? plot is very much discussed and speculated amongst the community. It?s convoluted and a lot of it isn?t objectively understandable, but that very mystique is a big part of the draw: in a fading age of gods and men, demons and dragons, might and magic, light and dark, things happened, are happening and will happen; you, the protagonist, are largely incidental and of nominal (if any) import until you impose your will upon it. One might easily call it lazy/poor writing, but another would call it a unique layer of player engagement, that the tale isn?t a simple one of ?beginning, middle and end,? but one of ?right now? into which the player must literally carve him/herself, ?you weren?t invited and it?s none of your business; this place isn?t giving an inch.?

The player community like pain and frustration,
No, we don?t ?like pain and frustration;? what we like is the rush of well-earned accomplishment, the fight, those moments when the impossible suddenly bends to your will and ability. Most games take some time for you to ?get;? Souls games are the kind you ?TAKE;? you learn the rules, then rip the rule book from its hands and beat it over the head with it; there?s a unique feeling in it.

also like trolling each other with notes they can leave on the ground, that frequently get you killed, or make you waste time smashing your face into a wall trying to roll through it as a "secret door".
? Yeah, but the whole ?fool me once? thing applies more so than the ?if at first you don?t succeed? thing. If you don?t learn after the first time you ?try jumping,? you?re the reason trolls get up in the morning.

Oh and also "Praise the Sun", no clue to the context of that, people just say it.
It?s a reference to Solaire, a summon-able NPC with a hard-on for natural light. Mostly popularized for his oddly jolly disposition in a world dripping with bleakness and speculated importance within the lore. I usually kill him :p

I'm going to differ slightly. Souls games don't really have much of a plot. What they have is a ton of Lore explaining the universe and why things are why they are, both baked into the scenery but also in the item descriptions and dialouge. It's the lore that Souls fans really tend to dig into, while the plot is rather bare bones in any given game(when it's not being a little obtuse, like in bloodborne).

Meh, I say ?plot,? you say ?lore;? I say ?tomato,? you say ?potato.? Semantics. Lolz.

But yes, you?re right; the lore is where the richness and depth lie. I just feel that as the lore is so much of what frames what plot there is, it doesn?t do the game justice to draw a hard line of distinction between the two. The plot is so much bigger than the player?s experience; we start in the middle, and end ambiguously at a new beginning where we?re left to ponder the state of the world as it means to go on into a new age.

Metal Gear Solid
You play as Snake on a mission to save someone and/or sabotage something. Your boss was the bad guy all along.

Metal Gear Solid 2
There's a bait-and-switch and you play as a bishie named Raiden. Nobody likes him. The ending's wack.

Metal Gear Solid 3
It's a prequel starring the will-be bad guy from the first (two?) games. You kill the original Big Boss. Everybody likes this one.

Metal Gear Solid 4
Snake is old and the bosses are chicks in furry-themed S&M suits. There's a guy that keeps shitting himself.

Metal Gear Solid 5
You're Snake three times removed and there's like a third of the game missing because #fuckkonami.
