Sure. I am gonna have someone who was born in the fifties (and apparently has remained there, being a conservative and all) to tell me what my form of entertainment should be. Politicians everywhere cannot grasp the fact that times change. All of them are short-minded when it comes to the matter of video games, cause they are only acquainted with the ones that cause controversy. GTA this, GTA that. Lack of arguments in this kind of subject has begun being something completely natural. Which makes any complaint from politics regarding games, useless.

"They are meant to be 18 but nobody cares what it says on the label." So is that the games fault or the raging idiots who let them get to children's hand?

Really wish politicians would do a bit of research b4 they spout non-sense. I mean really how can they lie convincingly when they don't know what they are talking about?

To all the Brits,
Either grab your red flags and molotovs or leave. Those are very quickly becoming your only options.

You know I'm sure if we had an R rating, it would be more difficult for children to play. And if they do, it's the parents fault for buying it. But, we still don't have one. (Australia)

The head-bangingly stupid part of this (well, one of them) is one main reasons everyone started giving a damn about the GTA games in the first place was their identification with existing violence-idealising media like Taxi Driver, Scarface, Goodfellas - stuff that was around in the idealised 1980s Wonderland the Tories would like to teleport us all back to.

Of course, in the 1980s themselves they were howling about Video Nasties, and had hilarious censorship rules which, for instance, meant that you couldn't have scenes with nunchaku in kung fu movies, despite the fact that the only thing the average person will put at risk with a set of them is their own elbow.

The Tories would prefer to return us to an idealised 1880s wonderland.

Let's all ignore the failed ex - party leader. Why is he even important?

Why does his opinion matter?

i love it when big govermenty types attack video games

the only reason they do is because there is no solid evidence that they dont do what they say

its still stupid though

Okay, first off, I really don't like GTA much at all, I thought that GTAIV was insanely overrated, which means you know something's up when I'm going to defend it. Let's get one thing clear here: video games cannot change a child's entire perception on life and turn him into a complete killer or some other crook. It might contribute in some cases, but I think the ability to do these things in a virtual world only /decreases/ a child's chances of doing this action in the real world. They can take out their frustration on something that isn't real rather than beating someone in real life.

Only with better indoor plumbing perhaps? Or do modern lavvies corrupt the spirits of the proles and lead to the unimaginable evils of single parents?

God, he is such a little prick.

You know what sad? He's ignorant. He cares nothing about 'the people.' Only to give himself more power.

He is nothing but a sad, little excuse for a human being.

PS: There are much worser games the GTA, he just use that one game based on the fact that he knew nothing.

Just a sidenote (from working in a game shop)

Selling GTA:DLC disc to parent of (usually) spoilt little git:
ME: this games 18 rated and has quite alot of adult stuff like drugs and guns, are you sure you want to buy it?
PARENT: yeah its fine he's played them before (or similar, disinterested response)
ME: it does also have full frontal male nudity, in HD if you've got the right TV
PARENT: Dear God No! (child starts screaming) No! you're Not Having It!

parent storms out without so much as a thanks, i calmly place the game back in cabinet and wait for the next one.

there are many sales assistants in shops who don't check, but there are many more of us who check thoroughly and inform the parents of what they're actually buying. if after that they still choose to buy it then it is not our fault.

i'm probably a little biased though.

FORMER leader. Meaning that if he did shit as leader in the first place, he won't be getting a top job. Aside from this guy and one other, the rest of all the parties are too busy trying to get expenses and screw over each other to bad mouth games. They properly don't even care.

I agree with him, games are harmful. More harmful than other media because they are more addictive. I defy anyone to deny that they have stayed up past reasonable hours to play a game they are into.

I don't think movies or TV shows have quite the same draw.

Unfortunately it does seem he's only mentioning this for attention, Grand Theft Auto has long been outshone as far as moral outrage goes.
Really? Tv programs do not have the same addiciveness (Real word?) Have you ever bought a DVD box set of a TV series? *Finish watching an episode "OOH what a cliff hanger but Yawn look at the time! I'll just watch one more episode" & then exactly the same thing happens at the end of that episode "Yawn Just one more"*

you know what? i'm just wanna say that there is SOME truth in what anti-video game activists are saying. While yes, video games are just harmless fun, they are time consuming, using up time that kids should be using to study or go outside. and while they are not corrupting our children in to murdering machines, they are desensitizing them to violence. Obviously, we shouldn't place blame on video games, the blame should be re-directed towards the parents, for not "looking at the label" and for not placing strict rules for how long there child should play games. While you all have every right to be angry at video games constantly being a scapegoat, I don't find it right that see these people as total fools.

wow man, you sure do hate the right dontcha O.O
Im not saying I want them all to die but Im not saying I dont either
(Head explodes)

And how is this any different from a movie theater that refuses to sell R-rated film tickets to those under the age of 17? I agree wholeheartedly that children should not play violent games, but most people in the US, UK, and Australia believe that the answer to the problem is by censoring the material completely. Which, even if you disagree with a game being "artistic", it still has a right to exist whether it glorifies violence or not.

Games are just now going through the unfortunate burden that films had to undergo to become more violent and blunt. In the 80s and early 90s, these same old farts (yes I like that word :D) were protesting their existence and called for them to banned from theaters. Films like Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, Taxi Driver, and Fight Club (in no chronological order obviously). Same went for music that was having vulgar language, particularly in hip-hop. Violence in films and profanity in music has been completely accepted nowadays, it's only a matter of time before games achieve this level of recognition, and the old farts can start complaining about the next thing that kids love.[/quote] (The Quote thing messed up on me)

I think the real problem whenever something violent comes out, kids always end up seeing it, the main reason there targeting video games so much is because it STARTED as a kids industry, they have the idea that these viloent are being released to kids, which can be justified, for i see a lot of kids with M-Rated games nowadays, and i guess this doesn't sit well with "old farts" (i like old people :'( )
