Expert Says Blaming Videogames for Violence is Racist

I was a bit confused by the title. But after reading into the article, it actually does make some sense.

Although wasn't the shooter from the V-Tech shooting Asian? People blamed video games for what he did didn't they?

Indeed they did at first, simply cause he was an Asian boy he must play games, until they found out the *gasp* truth. Screw investigative journalism, it needs blamed on something asap!

^This guy. I like you, friend. The problem with a lot of the people reading this, I would say, is they see the headline and think "oh, racism, eh? I don't see how that could be connected to game haters. I shall now enter the thread and say as much." Basically, they go into the thread with preconceptions about the content which somehow takes place in their mind over the actual content. I didn't think it could be valid, but when I read it, I saw the sense.

TL;DR: Don't make assumptions based on thread titles, and you don't have to be a cross burning minority lyncher to be racist.

Before video games, before games of any sort there was violent behavior.

These people who wish to make video games the next social hysteria are putting the horse before the cart here. How do they explain Hitler then? Or Mao or Billy the Kid or a hundred other examples I could give inthis manner?

...But that's not "racism." It's call "bigotry." Bigotry is a general negative assumption made based on an existing bias. Racism is onl when the assumption is based on race.

He said that inner-city schools that are populated by minorities are almost never linked to video game violence, whereas majority white suburban school shootings are almost always linked to video game violence.

Those who blame video games for violent behavior among middle-to-upper class white boys are making an underlying and unspoken assumption: when violence is perpetrated by middle-to-upper class white boys it can/should be blamed on video game violence while that same violence perpetrated by a lower class black boy should not.

And that assumption only holds water if you also assume that black people are inherently more violent, or that poor people are inherently more violent.

So, yes, blaming violent video games for violence that is perpetrated by middle-to-upper class white boys is either racist or classist. Take your pick.

Why not both?

First off: I read the article. I understand his argument behind the racism accusation. And it doesn't make sense. I know for a fact that people brought up Seug-Hei Cho's playing of Counter Strike. Seung-Hei Cho being Asian, not white.

Clearly he's never heard of Virginia Tech. Games are blamed for mass killings, not whenever a white person shoots someone else.

To be fair, "obsessive gamer" is also an Asian stereotype. Primarily towards Japanese or Korean males, but a lot of people choose not to differentiate between different Asian origins. And he was on a course at a tech university, further perpetuating the stereotype. Besides, that's one shooting in many. In terms of the majority, he's right. It is kind of racist. (key phrase there, kind of)

But then I read what the guy had to say and it seems that he does make some sense.
