"Extreme Gamers" Spend 48 Hours a Week Playing Videogames

Let's see... I game 3-4 hours a day (1.5 of that during my train rides), it goes up to 5-7 on weekends. Plus there's the occasional campaign on a free morning, worth at least three hours. So my maximum normal hours per week is 38. And that's with me going through University without failing terribly.
48 hours isn't necessarily worrisome. It's just a sign of too much free time. Also, sleeping 4-5 hours helps.

Seriously people, 48hrs of gaming a week is not healthy. 48 hrs of T.V. is not healthy either. If your playing, or watching, this much you really should consider finding something else to do for say one night a week. A bit of casual sport, or a weekly lesson in painting or woodcraft, a poker night with some friends, anything to get you out of the house and away from the tech. for a few hours. You'll find it a relief.

The japanese call it "Otaku", I believe: someone who spends a significant portion of their time/income on one particular facet of their culture.
I think that describes me; and it probably explains why my gaming standards are so high. I've played everything, and I can break the metagame very quickly.

Having lost my job last month i would say i have been gaming for about 10 hours a day if not more and i would say a lot of that 4% are in the same situation voluntarily or not.

When you have literally no commitments or things to do not only is spending so many hours gaming easy to do its necessary to stay sane!!

I would agree with this,

right now I work as a TA and training to become a fully qualified Teacher, I' am also looking after my sick mother and sorting her legal/financial/hospital issues out therefore I have quite a few commitements and responsiblity and therefore I' am very busy = no time for gaming (I recetly quit my gaming clan)

However if someone has no job because they got made redundant, there are no jobs, or there is no incentive to get a job because you will be worse off i.e. benefits pay for rent and poll/council tax etc. I can completely understand.

If you have no responsiblities or commitements then I imagine you could easily spend over 8 hours a day if not more gaming.

People say they could never imagine gaming for that amount of time, well take away your social network, your job, and your real life commitements and you have a lot of time on your hands = very easy, if you don't have a lot of money gaming is a cheap way to keep in touch with frinds and a good way to meet new people online so its completely understandable.

No job, no life, nothing else to do.
Ten hours a day, every day, is not unusual.

I believe if counted up, I clock in way over 48 hours.
Way over.

I have been an Extreme Gamer for several years and I am currently 28y/o. I have a full time job, drive a new car, and just bought my first house in the suburbs of Tampa. I still go out with my friends, read books, and hit the gym 3x per week.

Maybe I am in the minority of the minority.

"Playing time: 69.5 hrs past 2 weeks"

*whistles*
Okay the majority of that is probably me leaving programs running.

I suspect the "extreme" gamer tends to be younger, while the average gamer is older. I used to play way more often when I was in high school.
You'd be wrong. Like I said before, I play 45+ hours a week and I'm 40.
I kinda suspect because this is a gaming website that there are more people who play more video games.

I know the average gamer is in their late 20's or early 30's because they generally have more money and can afford to game. I agree with the point that you generally game more when you are younger, I did but thats only because I don't have as much time. Its down to circumstances, I responded to a guy before who games a lot because he is unemployed at the moment. There are circumstances in older people that might mean they have time to play more etc you can't sterotype or generalise.

Um, maybe on the weekends. I usually don't play more than six hours a day (max, not an average amount) unless I have somebody over to play games. And there are tons of days where I don't play any games at all, or only play at most an hour or two. But I do like unwinding after a stressful day with some gaming. But when you think about it, six hours a day for seven days is 42 hours. So it'd be pretty easy to be in the "extreme" gamer group if you were the sort of person who had evenings/weekends off, or worked a late shift somewhere and had afternoons or mornings free, or if you were single (I've recently become involved with someone, and dating eats up some serious time. I've gamed a lot less in the last few weeks just because of that, I bet.)

The Extreme Gamers are probably all unemployed or about to be. It's the only way that's realistically possible.

Wow, excellent point.

When you think about it 48 hours just SOUNDS like a lot. I mean, how much TV do you think some people watch? How much NFL, NBA, NHL, etc? How many people do you know who watch TV shows where every show is an hour long, and they end up watching 6+ seasons of it? And re-watching it, too. How many hours of music do you think some people listen to? How many hours of reading do you think some folks read?

It's all equally as fake and escapist as each other. The question is whether video games deserve any kind of special attention paid to the people who enjoy them than other addictive, fake forms of entertainment out there. I mean, what about freaking porn?!? Then again, porn isn't interesting for more than (at most) an hour or two at a time. Gotta say, video games > porn on pure entertainment value.

The poll itself is a generalization. I didn't see any statistics that say "Age X plays Y hours". That's why my first post started out with "I suspect...", because I don't know the actual numbers, and yes, I do know there are plenty of people older than me (I'm 25) that play a lot of video games. I also know when it comes to defying the odds of a video game poll, a video game website isn't the place to start looking. There is probably a good amount of "extreme" gamers here.
