Look, we learned it from the southpark movie. Bleeping is actually funnier than swearing.

PG-13 my butt. Zero Punctuation is an obvious exception.

So basically, make a popular enough video series and you can do what you want? There is no way anything ZP would be PG-13 if it was classified. South Park has less profanity than ZP. The first South Park MOVIE probably has less profanity than ZP.

Why is there so much bleeping out on the videos?

I thought it was a one-off for that Yahtzee in America thing, but now it's been in Doomsday Arcade, Escape to the Movies - really, we're not offended by the language!

Can you try and change whoever made this decision's mind, or at least tell us why.
We maintain a policy of "PG-13" level of profanity (usually) at The Escapist for many and various reasons. Sorry it annoys you to hear a bleep now and then. It annoys other people to hear someone say "fuck". This tells us there is no pleasing everyone.

So basically it's become forced on them.
I'm glad the escapist is shielding my virgin internet-dweller ears by murdering them while still letting me fully understand what was said. Maybe if I was under the age of 4 I wouldn't be able to piece it together. It seems that torture based censorship is designed to make me fear the use of "inappropriate" words.
Pavlovian techniques win once again! Become fearful every time your answering machine beeps!

One quick note in agreement with you about censorship: If you're going to beep out a swear word, make sure the beep is NOT TWICE AS LOUD as the source audio. That's just irritating.

I don't mind bleeps generally..

I actually find them funnier then hearing fucks etc.

However, the latest Escape to the Movies used a very harsh sound for its beep and it made my brain explode everytime it went off.

Hated that. In general though, don't mind it... soft beeps though please, all I care about.

what is the point of censoring them SAYING fuck when yahtzee did that whole "sCUNThorpe" gag?

furthermore what's the point of only doing this in NEW videos? also why wasn't this rule in place before?

Some people don't like "fuck", and I guess the Escapist is trying to appeal to them. Also, people who accept swearing can live with censoring.

Look at it this way: would you rather have to do an age verification every time you watch a video with swears on this site? Does it really matter to you that much, because it doesn't seem to matter to the people who make the content who decide to have it hosted here. It's their baby, I'm sure if they didn't like the policy we would know, or they would pull their videos from the site. If they aren't worried about it, none of us should be that worried.
Yes the bloody beeps in moviebobs last vid were near excruciating. And why every time a vid? we need bloody profiles to get to the vids.

Maybe it is different now, but I certainly never needed an account to watch a Yahtzee video here. What I'm saying, however, is the people who actually spend their time creating the content obviously do not think it sufficiently degrades their work, or else they would not host it here, so as fans of their work, I don't think we should be so pissed, because the work was presented in the way that it is, and that is ultimatley their decision.

So what you'r saying is, that no matter what someone does with their product, the fans just have to comply regardlessly? Sorry, but thats just not how it works.

Not a big deal. I mean, its not like we're confused with what he wants to say.

I guess its just to look more professional

Well... do you have a choice? What are you going to do? Either you're going to watch it in it's current format or you aren't. Maybe you can start a petition. I think you're making way too big a deal out of some bleeps in some online videos.

What's next, are you going to go up to James Hetfield and tell him "Hey bro, I really liked Master of Puppets, but if you could just switch up the EQ, that would be great, I really can't stand how muddled the bass is."

I could really care less if The Escapist wants to censor its videos, what gets me is that they're censoring the videos NOW. So, not only is it sudden, it's unprecedented; they've let F-Bombs run rampant before, but now they're putting the leash on them. In one of Yahtzee's interviews, he stated that he asked about language in his videos very early on, whether he should tone it back or not, and he was explicitly told not to. So, the artists can do whatever they want, but they'll be censored by editors anyway? That sounds like a very strange creator/editor relationship to me.

Yeah, the bleeps are funny, but they're only funny if they're there at the start. Introducing them now, and especially without any sort of official announcement, is just plain ludicrous.

If Russ Pitts is saying (according to the PM from sirBryghtside):
We maintain a policy of "PG-13" level of profanity (usually) at The Escapist for many and various reasons. Sorry it annoys you to hear a bleep now and then. It annoys other people to hear someone say "fuck". This tells us there is no pleasing everyone.
Why then is he trying to please people now?

Let's ignore and skip over the utter uselessness of the PG-13 rating, how it's become a marketing tool to get the meatiest demographic of theater-goers, and how it reduces theatrical exhibitions to advertisements for Unrated editions of eventual DVD releases. Barring all that, let's look at a statute specified for PG-13 movies: In the recent film Be Cool, Chilli Palmer (played by Jon Travolta) mentions that, in a PG-13 film, the F-Word is allowed once and only once, to which he replies, "I said, 'fuck that.'" the irony being that Be Cool is a PG-13 film and that scene is in fact the only instance of the F-Word being uttered in the entire runtime. Okay, now consider that in the aforementioned penultimate episode of There Will Be Brawl, the F-Word is only said once by one of Koopa's minions, and it is bleeped. Make of that what you will.

Here's what gets my goat: I could really care less if they're going to censor their videos, what I do care about is that they're doing it NOW. Not only is it sudden, but it's unprecedented. They've made no official announcement about a change in policy (operative word being CHANGE), and the only reason for them to do so is fear of losing and alienating their audience... as if saying nothing and pulling the wool over our eyes will yield a different result. Congratulations, The Escapist, you've lost my respect.

Respect (or lack thereof) aside, it's not enough to make me leave The Escapist and probably not enough to make me stop watching videos, but I can't help but think this might be the beginning of the end for the site. The only reason for them to compromise on their censorship policy now is if they're in serious trouble. Prove me wrong, please.

Have they been censoring ZP? I haven't even noticed... at all. Hmmm... I can understand why they might need to do that but I haven't even realised that it's been happening. Unusual...

Second that.
Also, it's not like breaking a contract and hosting your content elsewhere is all that easy (though there are probably sites lined up around the block who would give their souls to host Zero Punctuation). These video creators are paid for their work, and leaving would be a giant risk, a potentially burned bridge made of thrown-out paychecks. I'm not saying they're sell-outs, just that they have to pick their battles and choose their moves carefully. Speaking out against an employer is a pretty good way to get fired, even if you're in the right.
Frankly, I think the video producers on the site should probably start exploring some of their options.

I'm wholly opposed to this. There is no need to censor any of the videos on this website at all. I'd put in a more detailed argument, but I have a huge tired right now, so I can't.

There's a world of difference between a muddled bass and a changed lyric, just as much as there's a difference between adjusting the color on your television and cutting a scene.

Fine-tuning is one thing, an overhaul is something completely different.
