I have facebook for family more than anything else. I have family and friends who live overseas so I like to put up pics of my daughters.
But a similar thing has happened to my brother. Our group of friends are ALL on facebook and send out invites and they all forget to text him so I have to let him know, then he feels fucking depressed that no one bothered in the first place and doesn't wanna go anyway.
I understand how you feel coz of it, I never get to go to these things anyway as I'm the only one with kids.

Yep, I agree. I don't use it all that much, but I have friends that do, so I have a page. It impacts my day exactly as much as I let it, which is to say not much at all. I really wonder about people who say it's a massive timesink, etc. - you don't have to do anything with it. How is it a timesink?Wadders said:

It's a casual forum, nothing more; that's why millions of people use its oversimplified features and horrible interface. I just don't find it interesting enough to want to check it often.

They're maybe on contract, so cost per text isn't a concern? Do you not have internet either? I mean, there's saving money (heaven I know I did at school - I resisted getting a mobile for years) then there's just being plain obstinate. All these sort of things are social tools, becoming a basic accepted part of certain circles of social life. You can't really complain, tbh, if you're the only person in your group of friends without these and so start to miss out on things.WOPR said:

If you're going to avoid the communication channels used by your friends, you're just going to be a bit more proactive about finding out what's going on.

I only got FaceBook in my last year of high school mostly so that I could keep up with friends who were leaving and scattering all over the country to go to university ? and to get a few of them off of my back because they were bugging me about it. I know that several of my friends never got FaceBook until after they graduated and this happened because they didn't see the point.
And I still don't use it as much as a lot of my friends do; I'll go on maybe once or twice a month and update a few things. I don't like the spam mail it sends me but it's easy enough to deal with since I can figure out what I want to read and what I don't. What really pisses me off is when I get spammed with game invitations and the like when I don't play them and find them to be a waste of time. If I want to play something weird and fun then I'll go play Tetris.

I realize that no one will read my response because it's so far into the thread, but I have a facebook to keep people happy. I actually got rid of it last year and I visited family for the holidays and I was asked by all my relatives where I went. I check it once, scan for any new messages or whatever those other update things are called and then close it. It takes me maybe at most, if I see something on my home page that interests me, 10min max every other day or so. I don't live on the thing. Personally I don't see how anyone can spend more than 15min max on there. Oh well, I keep mine to make others happy. I don't really use it, but it is nice to be able to keep in touch with people I don't care enough to call everyday.
I'm totally on your friends side here. I can't tell you how many times I've done that to my friends, and yet. Now they all have it too.

I have Facebook. Don't really have any spam mail since all that Mafia wars and other invites and requests my friends send me don't show up on the main pages. I visit FB like 7 times a day, only for a second. Seriously, a second (or two). Just scroll down a bit and see if anyone posted something interesting. Usually not, and that's the end of that. Doesn't really "waste" any time as i see it.
The only thing that will make you waste your time (and by that i mean like more that 60 secs a day) on Facebook are the games. Those weird, addictive but quite pointless games. I played Mafia wars until i realized how much time i sank into it and then, one day, quit playing it.
So yeah, i can say this:
Using Facebook won't waste your time. Just don't play any games.

nothing like that ever happens to me. Then again, people feel the need to include me in things even though I don't necessarily want to participate.
