Freelancer.

I loved Starlancer to bits, but Freelancer took everything that made the first game awesome and twisted it beyond recognition. I think the reason so many people liked it was simply because not that many people even know of the first game's existence.

What are YOUR failed sequels?
F. F. X. 2.

That is by far the worst one. Others include:
SSBB
Mario Kart Wii
NHL 2005
Tetris 2
Need for Speed Pro Street
Tony Hawk's Project 8

Okay, lemme put it this way:

Try fighting as Link/one of the now underpowered characters against Sonic.

Sonic is the cheapest bastard I have ever seen. His damned Smash Ball special goes on for like 3 minutes, or about FOUR LIVES.
I have and won with Link and other characters against Meta Knight,Sonic,Snake and every player on Wi-Fi. Plus, Sonic's Final Smash is easy to dodge

I'll be the lout to bring Halo into this, but Halo 3.
I loved Halo until I played Halo 3.
Ugh. I still like the series, but not its more of an "eh, it kills time well" type of like.

I'm going to risk flame here and say that I consider Dawn Of War 2 to be a failed sequel. That's not to say it's a bad game, but for someone like me who enjoyed the original for its epic and bombastic battles and its all around over the topness, having the second game get lodged awkwardly between Company Of Heroes squad tactics, the original games setting and a strange RPG like system just makes it inferior. They lost the best thing about Dawn Of War, the sense of scale and the ferocity of a huge battle.

Obviously, opinions vary, but that's mine.

I have not played Dawn Of War 2 but I played a heck of a lot of 1 and I ended up not getting 2 because of this reason. In a universe where people are hugely disposable I liked the idea of just mowing through units and tossing them in the meat grinder for the greater good. T'ain't right.

I would personally say Super Mario 2 but that's too obvious. I'd have to go for something like Modern Warfare 2 (gasp!) not because it's a bad game but because it doesn't really change things up that much or add a whole lot to it. The best sequels add features that make you not go back to replay the first game because you would miss them. Others in this would be Gears of War, Rainbow 6 Vegas and Ghost Recon. I loved all these games but they felt more like add on packs than sequels. An example in my mind of a game that adds stuff in a sequel would be Assassin's Creed 2, Hitman: Blood Money or Splinter Cell Double Agent. They all added huge gameplay tweaks that you either loved or hated but at least it felt new.

How about Guitar Hero? I felt like they were all improvements up until 3, then World Tour fucked it up and begun the reign of shitty setlists we've seen up until now. The only thing World Tour got right was letting us play the entire song on vs on different difficulties.

I hear ToS 2 isn't as good as the original as it has the creature capture system and has cameos of main characters but isn't completely focused on them , but (SHOCKINGLY) I haven't played it. Does that count? =/

or something like this? http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.182737-The-Fallout-Debate#5434692
I've played through it completely and it's actually not that bad (for a spinoff). While the epic feel and classic battle system is a bit toned down in favor of the monster taming, the game is still funny as hell (probably funnier than the original). The plot isn't as good as the original either, but it's by no means a bad sequel.

Now Tales of Legendia on the other hand shouldn't even be called a Tales game and I hope team MelFes never makes another game... Ever...

Let's try not to turn this into a Brawl hate fest.

OT: Team Fortress 2. Just kidding, just kidding. In all actuality, I would have to say Resident Evil 5. It's basically Resident Evil 4, but shorter, with a silly AI partner (though it can be fun if you play with a friend), no gameplay improvements, some racism (though it could be argued that Resident Evil 4 had that as well), and an even sillier story, but not in a fun, campy way. It's like a little brother poorly imitating his older sibling, when perhaps he should be looking to other, outside sources *cough* Gears of War and Dead Space *cough* for inspiration.

No one's going to mention Spyro? Okay, I will. Everything after Year of the Dragon killed the series.

Also, NWN2 was a piece of steaming s**t. I loved the first one so much and I couldn't even get through half of the second :(((
A lot of people say that, personally I would say every Pokemon game that came after Gold and Silver

I don't think I can say it enough Wild Arms 4 took everything that made Wild Arms 3 awesome and replaced it with bland and platforming. Note I love platformers but If I wanted that I would go play a Mario game not a game where an annoying twat has to vocalize his every jump.
Wild arms 3 was absolutely awesome. I have yet to play 4, but I heard it didn't do as well.
for me a failed sequel would be Mass Effect II, Oblivion, God of war 2 (not even remotely interested in III), and Red Faction: Guerilla.
-edit- Can't believe I forgot FarCry 2. My most hated fucking game (sequel) of all.

For me Gears of War 2 was a huge let down. And also, judging from the demo, so is Splinter Cell Conviction. Cross that one off the to-buy-list.

Resistance 2, Resistance 2 and Resistance 2.

OH! Also Resistance 2. As well as Resistance 2.

Did I mention Resistance 2?
Let me Back that up for you.

It totally un did the gameplay style and feel of the last one.
It just copied other shooters "COD" to make it more media noticable.
It had a shit ending.
Multiplayer was full of annoying things.

Though you have to admit, we all liked the Co-Op.

Anyone who mentions KOTOR 2 gets their throat slit by me.

Sadly someone will still say it, and I will just sit here and keep enjoying KOTOR 2 regardless.

Seriously it may be people's opinion, but I don't understand how people keep praising only the first one when the second one had far better and improved gameplay as well as a much deeper story and universe.
I think the 2nd game was better purely for the storyline delving more into the idea of the Jedi not being all that much different from the Sith in terms of longtime goals, and how they introduced a bit of a grey line in between them.
It was a wlecome change from Jedi's faecal matter not stinking at all.

OT: I feel like Going Commando was the best PS2 Ratchet & Clank game, and Up Your Arsenal, while still good, didn't quite reach the standards that its predecessor set. Not to mention Deadlocked (probably the worst of the series).
I never played the series after going commando. It was and always will be the highlight.
In Up Your Arsenal, your weapons would upgrade TEN TIMES. That meant that upgrades weren't as radical as the single upgrade system in Commando.

In Commando, the Mini Nuke, your second weapon, upgraded from the Gravity Bomb, was still extremely devastating later in the game. Compare that to any weapon from Arsenal, where the difference between a level three and four gun is much less satisfying.

The obvious ones, the ones that sadden me but weren't excruciating. Fallout 3, Oblivion, Dugneon keeper 2, Black and white 2,Tribes Vengence,

the one I don't get, Majesty 2. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU MESS THAT GAME UP? It was near perfect, the expanded inventory, skills, and patronage from the second one were an improvement but everything else was just wrong! they removed the temples, they removed the silly art style, heroes had to buy their skills (I'll concede that the first one had the library and wizards were useless without it, but that was different somehow, it just gave non wizards an extra umpth if they went for it) removed most of the classes, fucked the AI (they won't do anything without a reward flag) removed the building choices, and generally removed its soul. It's still an OK game but DAMN. and I can't play the first one anymore cause I've done like anything. *sobs in a corner*
I have to ask... what was your gripe about Tribes: Vengeance? was it the fact that no-one plays the single player online anymore? Because I thought the multiplayer was actually done quite well, with the storylines all tying in and those little game matches that they had to break up the tension between heavy bits of stroytelling, and flasjback.s I thought Tribes: Vengeance was a pretty damn good sequel. Is your gripe the fact that it wasn't mulitplayer only?

Again, I say download TSL:Restored Content Mod!, with it installed, it trumps the first one easily!

I really like how in the second one, Kreia pretty much rips apart the entire nature of the Force, and how RPGs work. She's like a logic critic trapped in what she is critiquing.

Super Mario Bros. 2, although it wasn't technically a sequel... Luckily Nintendo redeemed themselves with the awesomeness that is Mario 3.
