I suspect it may have something to do with cookies... or part of a larger conspiracy to cover up, I don't know, the "second shooter" using a "magic bullet" from the fake moon landing site actually built on the moon (because why the hell else send people up there?), where they buried Jimmy Hoffa to appease the aliens, wizards and/or vampires who spread a secret zombie plague so the religious...

That's a common thing though Cory, I mean honestly I doubt George Lucas would have predicted an entire religion in THIS world would spring up from the Star Wars movies.

Consumers always put more thought into the products and media they consume than those who make them, especially now as people are assuming everything has hidden meanings. I do it myself, we try to find something else beneath the surface even in the most bizzarre places. I guarantee if you were to be with myself and my friends any given night that we are together we're arguing about the bigger moral meaning of Tyler Durden creating a male split personality that cares more about women than he does, or the eventual karmatic concequences of the Jedi having copied their lightsabers off of old Rakkatan Technology that was so deeply based in the Dark Side that use of one could end up killing it's weilder.

Hell, I've spent hours arguing with people online and in person about the weight of Leto Atredies II's "golden path" and whether or not it actually helped.

Most of that is essentially pointless when you consider that Star Wars was originally intended as a sort of sci-fi soap opera, being all about the people and less about the larger universe it takes place in, that Fight Club was a man writting a book to tell people to not be sheep and essentially nothing else, and that Dune was actually more about the domineering human spirit rather than anything akin to despotic dictatorships versus peaceful republics.

We love the media we consume however, and thus we look for more meaning than it may actually be intended to have.

I don't know if I agree that consumers ALWAYS put more thought into the products they consume(creators know how to make them some layers too), but I kinda agree about it in this instance. We've dealt with this topic before and this time I don't think Grey intended to push past any topics as much as he wanted to do a silly tangential joke. The brony strip dealt more with objectification whereas this strip was more of a joke on the concept of fake geeks infiltrating geek culture, and the relativity of geek culture.

The beauty of creating something is in the limitless interpretations that can spring forth based on the individuals and how they experience that something. It's probably the reason we're all even on this site.

Between this and Jim I feel I've missed a whole "thing" here. Weren't women faking it for years at game expos? I posted elsewhere that i got where some of the resentment might hypothetically come from, but this is reminding me a lot of what it was like when I was a kid and goth wasn't "goth" until it became popular. I didn't care then, I did my thing anyway, and I outgrew it and moved on.

I guess where I lose my grasp on this is when did being a "geek" become an elitist badge of honor to be hoarded and lorded?

Why in god's name is anyone surprised that some girls pretend to be geeks to get male attention? Like I've been trying to tell people for ages, women and men are essentially the same. Women pretend to be interested in things they don't really like to get male attention the same way men pretend to be interested in things they don't really like to get female attention. You must agree, as a side story, that happened in a parallel universe, it is pretty darn neat.

Basically some tool made a post about fake geek girls a little while back, some other tools (almost certainly the same kind of people we block when we game due to all the childish, abusive crap) and it has been blown way out of proportion.

I am not sure what exactly caused it to be dragged back up again though.

Except this wasn't just "Some Tool" this time, this was a fairly prominent comic book artist Tony Harris [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Harris_(comics)] . There is a link to objectionable post on his blog under the comic. I won't dignify it with another link.

I do not see how that makes a difference. I do not relate somebodies career choice to how important what they say is. It's not like the geek community has some kind of hierarchy, therefore what those at the top says represents everybody else.

He works in the industry, and wrote a bunch of misogynistic crap. He deserves all the flak that he gets for it, as do the idiots who support him, but it doesn't represent the culture as a whole, and it is not worth the ridiculous "OMG gamimg is so sexist!" response that it is gaining.

We do not assume America as a whole has a problem with racism due to some of the Obama hate.
We do not assume that Feminism has a problem with men due to some of the man haters.
We do not assume that all Muslims are secret terrorists because of the extremists.

In fact, people who do assume the last two are often called out on it frequently as being sexist and racist themselves.

Being nerd or a geek, or whatever is not a club. There is no secret handshake, there is/was no meeting. It isn't even a fucking a blimp. It's this word, a term, whether an insult in the past or a term of endearment in its present form. No one owns "Nerd" no one owns "Geek". No one died and made any one person Duke of Geek-dom, So I kind of wish you fucking nerds would shut the fuck up and go back to your geeky life style. Happy.

This is more painful then watching "Punk Culture". where its not punk to be punk anymore... or something or only real punks listen to X,Y,Z and if you don't you aren't punk...
I dunno it just sounds like a bunch of people to lazy to actually contribute anything to the culture, so they invent a problem. A straw man or straw girl, to beat up on. Something to be angry about because cause they have nothing really to angry about.

Listen she's hot, she's at a comic book con. She's there for her own reasons, and if you get your heart broken, well idiot that's on you. Grow up, deal with it, learn that PEOPLE generally suck, and move on with life.

It's no more complicated then that. Everyone every where, has face this problem. Girls who "like" sports but don't know anything, just there to meet guys. Like guys who have no business at the club, don't like dancing, or music, there to meet chicks. People generally use other peoples for whatever they want too and they don't need special circumstances to do it. It's a complete none issue and an insult to geek culture for it to even matter. Wake up idiots, there is no such thing as a "fake nerd". Never will be, get over it, you are not special, or unique.

Although this sums up my feelings on "geek culture" as a whole. Feel feel to replace geek with nerd or gamer.

I'm not saying that. But purely due to this man's career choice people outside the community WILL see him as a representative of geek/nerd/whatever culture.
