Ummm...

14,000. Mainly from the Regulator perk + being Very good (15 caps per evil kill) and the BHSO's trading me a shitload of Stimpaks and Ammo for my Laser Rifles and Plasma stuff. The real money is from the Tesla armour I give them though.

I had about 8000 at the end of my first playthrough. I pretty much killed everybody I knew (except the guys in Megaton and River City) and stole all their stuff and sold it.

But caps are practically useless at the end.

about 4000 by the end, they completely lost their value about half way through.

How come?
Because if you carry two or three main weapons (which you can swap at your house storage) you wont ever run out of ammo, also all the best weapons/equipment are found rather than purchased. Everything you can buy can also be stolen.

Repair is very useful, saves a lot of money, but the custom weapons are useless since there is always better unique weapons (like Lincoln Repeater or Alien Blaster) and also the Plasma Rifles > all else.

Once you get roughly halfway through the game you will have such an abundance of good items that caps become irrelevant unless you want to spend them on upgrading your house, which is also pointless because anything that can't be healed through sleep can be fixed at the doctors.

So my tips for you: Have very high repair, but dont bother collecting junk to make custom weapons. Horde all Enclave equipment (plasma weps, power and tesla armour) you can get your hands on back at your house. Search for the Lincoln Repeater (museum), The Terrible Shotgun (raider base) and Alien Blaster (crashed UFO). Steal stimpacks (i have so many I can't use them up) and .44 magnum ammo (for the Lincoln). Do all of the above and caps are totally irrelevant to success in the game.
Custom weapons can be really good. That one gun that shots darts is very useful against fast enemies like ants and Deathclaws.

I don't use my Uniques, because they're too much to repair, and I don't put anything into repair, because I put all my points into making my character stronger (I.E, Small Guns, Sneak, Melee Weps...). Plus, my Uniques are overpowered. Takes alot of the fun out of it. When you max out your Melee weps though, you can kill all of Megaton with a combat knife... THAT is definately fun.

I have about 10 thou. But i stopped selling things because that woman at megaton ran out of caps or stuff to pay with. I instead stuffed a locker in my house with literally everything in the wasteland. I think the amount of caps you got is directly related to how much you put into bartering, and i probably over-invested.

I have 100,000 caps (I shit you not).
Screen it or it didn't happen.
Just pick up everything you find and give it to Fawkes, then sell it. do the Nuka Cola challenge and the pre-war books. Do Reilly's Rangers, and the scrap metal. Invest heavily in all merchants, and help everyone. Don't ever put points into your speech, and just be a good person and stimulate the economy.

A luck value of 10 resulted in some pretty sweet findings (I'd find 80 in almost every other container when searching in a building.)

Take the Fortune Finder perk. (I think that's what it's called.)

I never bothered taking it, but if you're struggling then you'll find a butt load of caps when you search containers with this perk.

I had about 12 500 caps when I reached lvl. 20 with my evil character. And that was after buying all the EC packs and 5mm rounds I could find.

I think just giving all the map locations I found to Reilly gave me between 2500 and 4000 caps.

I have 30,000 at least. Thats from selling my extra weapons and that im lucky enough not to have to buy ammo all the time.

I didnt a lot of the things people have mentioned here, i mainly just sell a lot of crap to merchants, i refuse to walk away with them having more than 50 caps left to barter with.
Yet i have 32k caps now and i havent even tried at all tbh.

I have about 12,000...

I don't really know anything to buy. I got all the themes and equipment for my house, and I don't really need more ammo...

Also get ol' painless. 100% accuracy and uses .32, best weapon in the game.
