Ohh yay, a chance to flex my Fallout 3 knowlegde haha.

Set charisma to 1 when choosing SPECIAL, set Int to atleast 8 and Agility to atleast 7.
When choosing your Tag skills, tag speech, this will give it a bonus at the start to win some of the early speech checks (i.e. getting 500 caps for detonating/defusing the Megaton bomb and getting more caps from Silver in Springfield). For the other 2 tags, pick one of these two, Small Guns or Energy Weapons (SG is better IMO, more abundant early on) and also tag Repair/medicine.

Before leaving the Vault for the first time make a perma-save incase you dont like your character, and then you dont have to do the tutorial again. Also for your first skill points, make sure you have 25 explosives and 30 repair, this will allow you to do the Megton bomb quest, and the unmarked quest involving repairs in Megaton.

DO NOT kill Harith, he's to valuable, DO NOT follow him around either because he CAN die, this is more likly to happen with you nearby for whatever reason, if you have the PC version you can simply make him invincible :p (I don't condone cheating but it helps haha).

Good Luck and enjoy the game!

EDIT: ohh, I forgot to mention, the Science and Big Guns skill books respawn in their respected locations every 73 ingame hours so don't bother spending to many points in them.

BTW, on a side note, Fallout3nexus.com is a great place to find mods.
For a more challenging gameplay, get the FWE mod.

Also, I found raising med is always useful, as well as repair, small guns, energy weapons, and lockpicking.

Side note, avoid the ig guns skill. The bigger weapons (Fat man, missle launcher) are still useful without any skill points in it, flamers are so-so, and mini-guns/gatling lasers only seem to work if you max out the skill.

I've found that the most important (for me) are Medicine, Small Guns, Repair, and Speech. You also probably want to get your lock-pick and science up to about 50 (which will allow you to go through average locks)

Put some points in perception and int. Skillwise you'll want to immediately get explosives to 40 lockpick you'll want to put points into every level (at least get to 50 but 100 is better) as for everything else just play how you want

For the SPECIAL make sure you jack your intelligence, and I like a high agility so I can use a lot of VATS. The others you can customize with. Also I keep charm/charisma/whatever low but don't set it to the lowest value though. Also don't set any of the specials to 10 because they all have an accompanying pip-boy that raises it 1 point.

You all forgot the most important tip, when you are doing your SPECIAL skills, never ever, under any circumstance put any of them at 10, put them an 9 tops. There are bobbleheads throughout the game that will raise it by 1 etc, and if its already at 10, you wont get the benefit from it.
To add to that, best way is to ignore all the bobbleheads that increase those until after level 30, at level 30 get the "Almost Perfect" perk, then get the bobbleheads. That would get them all to 10.

Why does everybody seem to say medicine is so usefull? By the time your 5-6 hours in you have more stimpacks then you know what to do with.
Really? That has never been the case with me until half way through the game, and then Point Lookout popped up and... well... bye bye stimpacks.

Dont feed the Yao Guai :D... but corny three dog references aside I recommend not blowing megaton up because I personally cant stand tenpenny towers but its your preference and if you dont give a damn about your karma level then yeah you should probably blow it back to the stone age because If im right (and I may not be) Burke pays 1000 caps where as lucas pays only 500 (and thats with the speech check) which brings me to my next one level up speech its useful all throughout the game

Heres some of my tips:
-Play on Easy until you get the hang of the game/Have good equipment.
-Dont make a "jack of all trades" choose a specialization and stick to it.
-Always have Small guns AND Security OR Repair skills.
-When you turn 16 look on your Dads desk for a little blond man (Bobblehead) pick it up!
-Do "The Power of Atom" Quest ASAP.
-When you can get the "Lawbringer" perk.
-Do not play through all the main story quest until your certian theres nothing els interesting to do.
-If you do play through the main quest permaturely, buy the "Broken Steel" DLC.

[Edit]
-use up food/water before stimpacks.
-Ammo is weightless so pick it up, if you dont need it still pick it up and sell it.
-human/ghoul compaions can wear power armor.
-Listen out for Radio Singals, you might find a devastating energy weapon...
-Death Claws are to be feared. RUN FOR IT!
-Go to the Scrap Yard.
-Buy the "My First Infirmary" and "My First Laboratory" for your house before anything els.

Hi guys and gals,

I'm gonna pick up Fallout 3 tomorrow, and I'd really appreciate some advice as to what sort of character to create, etc etc.I'd also like some advice on what important decisions to make like the whole blowing up Megaton thing. My playing style or preference doesn't really matter and any suggestion will be taken as long as its, you know, good.

I do hope this topic hasn't been done before.

Well, some builds are better than others.

Without reading all of the responses I will say that Intelligence is probably the most useful attribute since it nets you more skill points. While there are plenty of books and things that will raise skills hidden throughout the game, finding absolutly everything is really hard, even with a guide.

Otherwise, all of the stats can be fairly important. The only one that is generally considered a true "dump stat" is Charisma, since having high speech skill will do just about anything Charisma will.

HOWEVER having a very high Charisma score of 8+ will open up a few extra dialogue options here and there. Various people have played a Charisma build and said it made some things easier, I haven't tried it myself. It's generally an 'all or nothing' investment however.

When it comes to skills, generally speaking the most important ones are Lockpicking, Science, and Repair (other than weapon skills) in roughly that order. Lockpicking and Science being used for opening things to get treasure (picking locks, or hacking computers for information, or to open electronic doors). Repair is needed so you can take duplicate weapons and repair the ones your using, weapons degenerate quickly. What's more if you can maintain a weapon at 100% repair or close to it (you won't generally find weapons in this condition, you have to repair them to that level yourself) it gives you a substantial advantage.

Generally speaking the biggest choice is going to be whether to focus on small guns or energy weapons as a primary weapon skill. Heavy weapons tend to wear down quick and weigh a LOT while not giving much in the way of a practical firepower boost. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Simply put Energy Weapons are probably a better investment, especially if you do the quest for Moira entering the first town, agree to get the food from the super-duper mart, and grab a couple of laser pistols in there (which you can use to repair one to a fair condition). Energy Weapons aren't as rare as you might think.

What's more if your getting the "Game Of The Year" edition, you can pretty much head for the mothership Zeta add on right away (follow the waypoint) and load up on Alien death rays and such from the very beginning if your so inclined. The effectiveness of these varies, but the bottom line is that with the way things play out your liable to have no shortage of energy weapon access and power cells from that time forward (not that it would be a real issue otherwise).

Such is my advice.

i suggest these skills to work on initially: Small guns or energy weapons, science, lock picking, repair. as for important decisions, you should probably just plan on playing the game twice once as good, once as evil.

THIS THIS THIS. Get all the bobbleheads and the educatiuon perk that doubles the skill points you get from books and you can almost max it out

fyi i saw in walmart that the collector's edition for the ps3 was $29.99. you'd have to buy all the DLC separately of course so its a trade off but i find the bobblehead to be strangely comforting

Max your intelligence ASAP (go straight to rivet city and get the bobblehead)
Max small guns, repair, science and lockpick

You can beat the game pretty much that way

Make sure you have high Speech. That always comes in handy.
Id go with this. Fallout 3 is one of my all time favorite games simply because you could go through the main plot almost entirely by talking. If you give speech your full attention, it is hard to not have a good (if a relatively easier) time.

What kinda character are you looking at? For general advice pick 1 or 2 weapon types and stick with it. 1 type would probably be better and always carry 2 useable weapons from that line with different types of ammo. Repair is always good.

Also make sure you don't put your stats above 9 as you can aquire bobbleheads to increase their value by 1 and never increase a skill like Small arms up to 100 leave it at 90 until you have its respective bobblehead as well. Well if you want to be really precise and have the strongest possible character which isn't really necessary.

Small Guns, Lockpick, Sneak, Repair, and you should be alright. And I blew up Megaton, but I'm always an evil bastard in games whenever I have the choice.

Basically, blowing up Megaton comes down to this: do you want to own a crappy shack with a robot butler, or a penthouse suite with a robot butler? Its an easy choice.
I always saw the difference as being between something central and practical (Megaton) or something that isn'r as practical but looks nicer/better view (Tenpenny - the alternative).

Really there's a bunch of places you could make your safehouse, including the washinton monument.

If you do decide to nuke megaton, be sure to loot the place first and start the Wasteland Survival Guide quest. That's a good one to start the game on generally.

A lot of people will tell you which skills you'll "need" but it depends on how you play. The one skill that everyone uses no matter what their play style is Repair. The other's are up to you but at the beginning you'll see much more small guns than anything else.

Get the goty. One dlc kind of completes the game and the others are quite good as well. Just don't do the mothership one unil your science is at 75.

Save often and make lots of saves.

You don't need it too high, but at least 30 is always helpful early in the game and even when you have a ton of stimpacks it means you use less. Also, depending on your playstyle you may not end up with loads of stimpacks. I have one character that always has well over 100 whereas another one rarely has more than 10.

First piece of advice, when doing your special stats put intelligence to 9. This will help you maximise the number of skill points available to you. At level three or four you will be able to get the educated perk that gives you extra skill points. Get that as soon as possible.
When you leave the vault, first head into megaton to sell of some of the crap you picked up and to get the vault 101 armoured jumpsuit Then go to rivet city without killing anybody and get the intelligence bobblehead raising it to 9.
It will set you up with a pretty good character. Also, lockpick, science, repair, medicine and the skill for your preferred weapon (energy weapons is what i would recommend but melee is very fun sometimes) are what you need to put your skill points into.
Some would also recommend leaving collecting the bobbleheads until after they have taken the perk that upgrades all special stats to level 9 but this means leaving a few quests until later on so you don't miss on the three bobbleheads that you only get one chance at.

Also, the National Guard building can be a good place to make your home and is stacked full of weapons and armour.
