I'm having trouble in the game and I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong. I've typed in my basic character sheet as an aid to the experienced Fallout 3 players of the Escapist in hopes of critiquing my current build and seeing if they have and tips or recommendations for me.
Go find the alien blaster. Alien blaster=Things are looking hairy, they're no longer looking hairy.

You could try putting more points into Medicine, it makes Stimpaks more effective which is super useful early on when you don't have many. If you're having problem with health that is.

You can always do other missions to level up a bit too, it's very non-linear.

You have Sneaking and Smallguns...I give you a tip.
Near the back of Megaton is a "hollowed out rock"...someone left someone else a Sniperrifle and some ammo there. Have fun finding it.
Makes for some nasty sneak critical headshots if you can snipe.
I´m also a Small Guns player...I´m shit with energy weapons.

Well, I´m nearing level 30 and I have just completed the mainquest+Broken Steel addendum and started the Anchorage reclaimation simulation just today. I still have the Pitt and Point lookout aswell as Mothership Zeta to attend to and I´ve not yet been to Canterbury commons...plus a shitload of other places I have not yet been. The game is HUGE.
Also, the higher the level, the more difficult are the monsters you face...
If you are around level 20 when you finish the last Broken Steel quest "Who dares wins.", you find a SHITTON of Feral Ghoul Reavers (fucking hard enemies, even moreso then a Deathclaw) in the Presidential Subways...you have backup by Sentry Bots, but the Reavers are Bitches.
At lower levels, you get some glowing ones<.<
Sure, when you regularely dispatch Supermutant Overlords they turn to be no threat anymore, but one with a Gatlinglaser almost killed me because he just did so much damage to me and got me cornered. I almost ran out of healing items. But when you run around the Wasteland and would NORMALY find some Molerats and Raiders, you now find Yao Guai and Deathclaws.
Where normal Feral Ghouls are stalking, you find now Glowing ones and Reavers...
If you move around the Subs in DC at a too high level, you get some nasty enemies.
But the higher the level, the better the stuff you carry around with, of course... I almost exclusively carry unique weapons that do more damage then the regular ones, but still can be repaired to full with the normal ones.
Only ununique weapons I use are the Fat Man, Missile launcher and Sniper Rifle. And I use them rarely because of my Xhulong Assaultrifle and Ol´Painless aswell as Eugene do plenty of Damage in most situations.

put points into medicine, it helps alot also you should have a high int its very important.

Yeah, so basically I was doing the same thing here I did in the first mass effect, I kept thinking "The game probably wants me to progress a bit more in the story before I do these sidequests", but contrary to ME, Fallout actually bit me in the ass for it. I am plowing through sidequests in and around megaton now, and am starting to see the appeal of the game!

FYI: For people who don't know it fully refills your VATS points when you kill an enemy in VATS
My "VATS Abuse" build requires these things:

- Action Boy/Girl
- Commando
- Wired Reflexes
- Sniper
- Nerves of Steel
- Grim Reaper's Sprint
- Concentrated Fire
- 10 Agility
- Gunslinger (Optional)
- Paralyzing Palm (Optional)
- Items that increase your AP (IE, Tribal Power Armor)

With this build, your shots in VATS will be super accurate, and your action points pool will be huge, refilling really quickly.

My "Critical Abuse" build requires:

- 10 Luck
- Fineness
- Better Criticals
- Ninja

It's very simple, but very effective. With this, while using unarmed or melee attacks, you have a whopping 30% critical chance with a +50% damage on your crits. Melee not your thing? No problem, ditch Ninja, and you still have a 15% crit chance per shot, which, when combined with an automatic weapon, is devastating.

People say how Important Inteligence is...
I´ve been doing fine in F3 with just mediocre Intelligence...I dont need to max out all skills to feel good. Sure it helps gaining 20 Skillpoints instead of 15 or something per level, but really?
I maxed all of my primary skills by about level 15 I think, maxed Big Guns by 19 and maxed Lockpick in just 3 or 4 more levels, I can make do with just HIGH Skills and I can actually waste some Skills I just don´t need. I ran around with pretty low Lockpick actually which prevented access to some pretty nifty stuff actually, but I didn´t care, It was the way I played...and I don´t play RPGs for maximum efficiency.

Like Energy Weapons.
I think all energy weapons in F3 are butt ugly. I love the sound of shell casings hitting the ground and loud bangs and small metal slugs being propelled by a chemical charge into someones frontal lobe. So I´m a smallguns player. Never touched an Energy weapon (only to repair and sell which I´m having a hard time because almost noone is rich enough to pay for a fully repaired Plasmarifle) and been doing fine without.
My 2000+ 5mm Bullets need to be put into somebody.

Friend of mine actually said to me that I am a noob for using Smallguns...Really, I´m shooting 3 rounds per VATS attack (or more) and the only normal "fullauto" energy weapon is the Gatling Laser, which is actually affected by Big Guns.
Sure yes, energy weapons have high damage per Shot and are more accurate or something, but I just don´t like them, and I think my Xhulong Assaultrifle can compete with a Laserrifle any day.

Anyways, I have boosted my INT a BIT up in the beginning, but not by that much, think it's 7. I think I'll do by just fine, don't think I'll need to restart the game. Just wondering though, am I missing much on my first playthrough by not having the dlc's from the get go? was originally planning to get them all after I've finished the main storyline, but now people are saying how some of them are actually good to have early on. Should I reconsider?

not true. I started up a new playthrough the other day, did the MZ DLC and still managed to pick up the blaster after.

You have a pretty good build for combat honestly (both melee and ranged).

- with a low charisma it'll be harder to open up special chat dialogues likely (so save alot before you talk)
- get lockpick, repair and (optional) science to 100 and prob sneak since you're a ninja
- Find Mora in Megaton (I believe you can do this on good or evil) and do her "clear out the Super Duper Mart" mission for her book. You'll find lots of good gear in there right away. If you have repair, the armor you find there is decent once fixed up a bit.

*edit* next level up bump up int right away and get the learning perk too (forget the proper name) so you gain extra skill points each level

Well your build is fine, I used the hunting rifle for pretty much the entire game until i got the alien blaster that vaporized things. If you aren't, try using VATS a lot. The game gets really easy once you actually get power armor, because at that point you can take a lot more damage.

If you're really having trouble finding good equipment, you might also try the Operation: Anchorage DLC. It's a pretty easy quest and gives you tons of great items including power armor that never degrades, a suit that makes you nearly invisible, and the gauss rifle (one of the better weapons in the game).

Try to get your repair up and find some raider armour iirc it has a higher DR rating than the armoured vault suit and you can repair it, also get a hunting rifle and repair it as much as possible that thing has saved my life in DC countless times.

That was not what happened to me.
I walked over to the alien crash site, tried to get the Alien blaster, was beamed into Mothership Zeta, Did the DLC, Went down again, the Spaceship and blaster was missing.
