The negativity in this thread makes me sad :(

WE'RE GETTING MORE FALLOUT GUYS! HOW IS THAT A BAD THING?

Hell I liked Fallout:NV more than Fallout 3 and Skyrim. Yet I'm still pumped for this game. Who knows, maybe Bethesda will take some hints from NV and incorporate the best of both Obsidian and themselves.

Imagine a Fallout game with better graphics than Skyrim (new console gen). Keep that drool in your mouth boy.
this guy... this guy has got it. if i'm honest, i preferred FO3's map and layouts, i thought in general the locations were more interesting, but otherwise NV was better in nearly every respect. THAT SAID, i fucking loved FO3, despite its flaws, and i'm psyched that they're finally making a new one.

with any luck they will learn from the criticisms of skyrim, and the successes of NV, but i find it very hard not to be excited about the prospect of a new fallout game
You two...I like the way you think! Can we be friends? :3

Fallout 3 had an amazing sense of atmosphere and world-building. It simply felt like a wasteland and I was awestruck the first time I ever played a full 3D open-world FALLOUT game! (Seriously, the first time you step out of the vault is priceless)

New Vegas came along with all it's much appreciated and needed tweaks to the system and Obsidian improved on the formula. Now it might be a bit much to hope for Bethesda to take the new tweaks into account, but the fan outcry since NV would be difficult to ignore.

Both games have their strengths, both have flaws, but as far as any future Fallout game goes...the positives far outweigh the negatives in any regard. I love both and I am over the frikkin' moon to hear about Fallout 4.

I mean - we're getting more Fallout, more content, new shiny graphics, new...EVERYTHING!
Yes, I'm unapologetically hyped.

Less arguing, more Fallout.

I hope they come up with an entirely new setting for this game. Maybe even take the game outside the US for a change.

Exactly. Its a shame really. I liked Fallout 3 better cause the Capital Wasteland was just more interesting and that was what mattered me to me. That doesn't change the fact that I sunk like 200 hours into New Vegas and think it had awesome characters, weapons, and lore. I just want another Fallout game that focuses on the wasteland, the player, and exploration. I wouldn't mind if they just kept alternating studios

Edit: actually this second page of comments is looking pretty good. NEEDS MORE POSITIVITY!

Fallout 3 was my first experience with open world formats, and it blew my mind. To this day it's left a profound effect on me that hasn't gone away, and still ranks as my All Time Favorite Game Ever. But to be fair, I went into it without pre-built bias against the company, contempt for FPS in a RPG, or rage against changing up things.

New Vegas was a mixed bag. The writing was a *vast* improvement over Fallout 3, and factions, character wheel, and more housing was more than welcome. But the entire environment was just so damn boring and sterile that it didn't have the magic that compelled me to play it forever like 3 did. And the quests seemed like an endless series of step-and-fetch-its, through one loading screen after another at Vegas.

I absolutely loved Old World Blues and Lonesome Road, though. They respectively captured and intensified the quirky fun and haunting apocalyptic feel of F3 very well.

Here's hoping the fourth one draws from all the strengths, and discards the weaknesses.

Fallout 3 haters make me not want to read the comments on Fallout articles. Every chance to say New Vegas was better even when not relevant, huh.

Maybe they'll make another interesting setting like the capital wasteland. It's not like a change of scenery from bone-dry desert is a bad thing after 15 years.

There is hope. Not only do we get a confirmed continuation, we also avoid sinking into a terrible NMA quagmire. Well done!

Although I must say, I hope the studio accept any help it can get in the writing and consistency department. But it would be reasonable to assume that some of it have rubbed off. They have been getting better.

It will be very interesting when the details starts to trickle in. I wonder where it's set, one does not make idle hints to the Institue without payoff.

Overall, jolly good news!

I want more Fallout 3 story and atmosphere with FNV gameplay. If it's the other way around, I think I'll pass. Also, I want it to not be set in a desert. Post-apocalyptic desert is a bit redundant because the post-apocalypse is supposed to reduce everything else to desert. I wouldn't mind seeing another game set near a major metropolitan area that still has substantial suburbs, so we get the best of both. Boston would be nice.

Yes please. Take my money. I always like it when Bethesda announces new games. Gives me something to really look forward to.

Here's to hoping that we get an environment that's as expansive and interesting as Fallout 3, but a story, characters, and gameplay that are like Fallout New Vegas'.

Fallout 3 did in my opinion, a better job at portraying the post apocalyptic environment. In new vegas there are some places where you can forget all about that which is rather odd after a nuclear apocalypse.
Bethesda made some big strides in welding gameplay and narrative together.
The Mojave has this big U shape across the gameworld with mountains and invisible walls where bethesda managed to rail most players to Riverwood and then to whiterun where most players got to kill their first dragon.
Which was pretty nice; even if the carriage intro BS wasn't very good.

Err that's because Fallout has always been post-post-apoc, Fallout 3 feels like the bombs had only fallen a few decades ago and as a result it's boring and lifeless.

I don't think that I can be satisfied by a Bethesda Fallout after having played Obsidian's New Vegas. But I'm willing to switch sides for whichever company can release a game that isn't a broken, heaving wreck on the first day of release. :p

The Capital Wasteland didn't have organisations like the NCR or Followers of the Apocalyse to help them, the Brotherhood of Steel do their best to help, but due to the super mutants, they haven't been able to do all that much (their attitude and desire to help the wastes is perfectly and reasonably explained in the game) The Vault 87 mutants are much more aggressive and feral to their Mariposa cousins, meaning the prospect of trying to build in the Capital Wasteland is all for naught. California also had access to clean water (allowing growth) something the Capital Wasteland never had.

For example, the NCR could take care of the raider problem in the west so they could expand and grow, the Capital Wasteland doesn't have that (the BoS have their hands full) So its perfectly reasonable why it feels like the bombs only dropped decades ago, growth was all but an impossibility until the Lone Wanderer (who can put the final nail in the coffin if you so choose) steps in.

I am very excited for a Fallout 4, I liked NV better than 3, but 3 was still a fantastic game, hoping Fallout 4 can improve the series in every way.
The problem with that is that the general atmosphere of the Capital Wasteland and comments by some characters in Rivet City and Megaton suggests the war was several decades ago, not 200 years. It's as if Bethesda originally had it set around the same time as Fallout 1 and then changed their minds to after Fallout 2 half way through the development because they wanted to use the Enclave and Brotherhood, instead of their own unique factions, leaving a rather schizophrenic feeling game.

Overall I'm cautiously optimistic. Bethesda have proved they can capture the feeling of a Fallout game. If they can improve the quality of their plot and characters they could pull it off.

..outsourcing to Obsidian.. is a bad thing?
I preferred New Vegas over Fallout 3. It felt like a complete upgrade imo.

Huh?

Manya Vargas, the old lady in Megaton, says the city existed before she was even born, although they didn't build the walls until around when she was a kid, and she is 63, and the only person who talks about history in Rivet city says it is over40 year old, the city itself some navy scientists dudes had been living in it for several years before that.

there is no one in either city who mentions, or implies, the war only happened a couple decades ago.

Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Look, I liked Fallout 3, but Fallout: New Vegas was the true successor to the original games. And I enjoyed that world to explore more than the DC Ruins. So another game set in the west with the Legion and NCR still trying to rip each others throats out would be very much appreciated.

Anyways, let's hope Fallout 4 isn't nearly as buggy as 3/NV were.

As much as I loved Fallout 3 (prefer it over NV based on atmosphere alone), I really do wish Bethesda was outsourcing it like they did with NV. They're capable of making a world that looks good, but little else in terms of writing and general game stability.

That said, I'll likely still buy it in a Steam Sale and once the modding community has managed to iron out some of the bugs.
