Melee, Speech, and Lockpick are my TAG skills. I was going to go Guns, Speech, Repair but I figured that would make the game a little to easy. Which I thought would hold true, but then I got the fire axe. I kill everything with that thing, most notably Caeser and everyone in The Fort.

Well I don't have it yet, but from the vast amount of mindless reading I've done on the Fallout Wiki I've got a good guess of what I want to do. My tags are going to be Energy Weapons, Speech, and lockpick. Just like in Fallout 3 I'm gonna get 100 lock pick, 100 science, and 100 speech so no barrier will be able to stop me. What ever skill points are left are probably gonna go into barter, medicine, and energy weapons. Nothing like a Gatling laser and a good ol' flamer when things get close and personal.

Is anyone getting much use out of the survival skill? I just finished the game on hardcore and can only remember one survival check, but that instance also had an alternate intelligence check. Extra health for food is good, but stimpacks are so easy to come by that I never ate food for health.

Go to Charleston Cave, Just north of Jacobstown. There waits for you a melee weapon that beats all others in the game (except for the Blade of the East, but you can only use that weapon on maybe two guys before the game ends).

If this is essentially similar to FO3, would there be any reason I wouldn't want to TAG Guns, Science and Lockpick?
Speech is insanely useful in New Vegas. Science is as well.
But aside from that: even if some skills are most advantageous to use, it might not be the skills most fun or interesting for some to specialize in. That really matters more.

What is your Fallout: NV character build, level, and your opinion of their power level?
Mine is Gun, Speech, and repair based, and so far it's worked really nicely. I'm level 15 and have a perfect condition marksman carbine, as well as several other weapons in tip-top shape due to my repair skill
just got level 20,repair,energy,guns,barter,speech and at 5000 caps but gonna get more after i hand in all the snowglobes i spent all of today finding.
Companions:either lily or Craig and ED-E. (I could get gannon, cassy and rex but i don't think my character really suits them)
Have many unique weapons, most at 70% or higher condition.

Oh yah and btw try and get the all american if you like your marksman carbine. (its all ready modded for you)
Link to get it:http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_34
If you have trouble, message me.

EDIT: Am I the only one who's framerate is butchered by the Strip? My computer isn't outdated or anything like that.
Nah I have to play my 360 version because my framerate dies when a character animates in anyway at all. Very annoying especially with a good computer running it

On Topic, just finished my Hardcore runthrough and my Tag Skills were Guns, Speech, Barter and Survival. The latter is essential later in hardcore mode as food starts to run out. But in general I'm a smooth talker with a pistol and a suit, only at the end did I gear up in Ranger Power armour

Here maybe this would help.

Don't have vegas, but on FO3
Unarmed, Sneak, something irrelavant.
Monks are the most amazing thing to ever happen in any game ever.

i'd probably stick with a Gun/Speech/sneak set up, you don't really need to up strength to use guns, so you can probably push intelligence/charisma abit.

My hardcore build:

STR: 8
PER: 5 (8 with implant + glasses + beret)
END: 5 (6 with implant)
CHAR: 2
INT: 9 (10 with implant)
AGL: 8 (9 with implant)
LUCK: 5 (6 with implant)

Guns, Speech and lots of crit multipliers, Finesse, Better Crits, Sniper etc.

Silenced Sniper Rifle owns everything.

Let's see.

1st guy is/was level 26, Guns, Repair, Lockpick. He was using a marksman carbine, Ratslayer, Modded Sniper Rifle and Riot Shotgun. Fun times till the PS3 saved over it, I'll have to start it over, which pisses me off immensely. Somehow managed to be good even with all the theft and indiscriminate murder. EdE and Boone.

2nd girl. Level 20?, Might be lower, but Energy weapons, Repair, Lockpick. Plasma rifle, Incinerator, Fully modded laser rifle. Again, good somehow. Ede and Veronica.

3rd guy. Level 14, Repair, Melee, Unarmed. I fucking love Knock Knock. Evil as fuck. So far, nobody, but I'll probably end up with rex and Veronica, mostly cause the supermutant would be too much like adventuring with my grandmother.

4th guy. Mexican assasin level 5. First time I boosted Charisma and Intelligence. Guns, Sneak, Speech. Makes fixing stuff and B&E a pain in the ass, but I always get what I want before shooting you in the head with a silenced .22. Rex and Raul.

Tags : Guns, Medicine and Repair

Traits: Wild Wasteland (everytime, I just can't resist:) and small frame.

I'm currently level 19 and am doing very well. My Speech is high; my Guns and Energy Weapons are at 70 and my Repair is 99. The only one I need to raise is Lockpick, up to 100 to get the Gobi Campaign Rifle.

For New Vegas, on my first Hardcore run I decided to tag Guns due to the plentiful ammo/repair opportunities, Repair because I wanted Jury Rigging for unique weapons and Speech due to the many opportunities that it affords. I also tended to favor using a fully modded 10mm and a fully modded Hunting Rifle for long-range encounters. This seems to be a fairly common combination, however, so my next character that I boosted with the Vault 11/Shake down Goodsprings EXP exploit I tried something different. I used a 9mm submachine gun/9mm pistol extensively using the essentially infinite ammo found from the Goodsprings glitch and I found it to be an excellent, run-and-gun combo. I also tried playing "realistically", so to speak, thinking of perks and traits that I would realistically want to have in a post-apocalyptic setting, and I found this to be an excellent aid in my decisions.

All I can say is, unless you want achievements, just play for fun and see where different choices take you.

Science, lockpick, and either repair or energy weapons (I forgot). I chose those because I like taking stuff and figured I'm good enough at fighting.

Also, I'm level 9, and my SPECIAL build was pretty strong, even smarter, but kinda slow and socially awkward.
