So my question is: Is New Vegas worth getting now? Has it been long enough that most of the bugs are fixed?
They said that most of the problems had been ironed out but I got it back from one friend about a week ago immediately ran into a locked quest and then a freeze when I went to an earlier save so I swiftly lent it out to another friend.
Even if everything was fixed New Vegas didn't do everything better than 3. They did improve on story and combat but the map is cluttered and uninspired (it's not a very interesting place to explore) and there are only a couple of interesting random encounters; not the endless array we got in 3.
I can totally understand the curiosity but at this point you may as well wait for the goty which will probably be around in a few months. I wish I had.

I felt New Vegas had just as much atmosphere as FO3. It was a different atmosphere, sure, but by no means worse. Agree to disagree. Both great games, though.

P.S. After rereading my first post, I can see how it could have come off as hostile, and if it did I apologize. I certainly don't want to offend a fellow wasteland and desert wanderer.
No problem - no offense taken. I loved both games as well. I don't usually self plug but I think this week's song will help explain my case here and why F3 is my favourite of the two:

Okay, so I was way late to the Fallout party, but in the long run, I'm glad I eventually got there because it turned out to be a great party with free booze and fast hotties, but I digress...

I love Fallout 3 and its DLC (even though Broken Steel kinda pissed all over the epic, conclusive "Good" ending)
Yah I mean you did the right thing, shouldn't a video game reward you if you do the right thing? Or at least make Sarah more willing to do what she was doing?

But other then that the thing I hated the most was the end decision, there was a good and evil decision, the good decision made perfect sense, the evil decision made no sense at all, and even if you did the evil decision, despite it being the biggest event to occur ever since Project Purity NOTHING changes other then the location, Three Dog doesn't even mention it, the water caravans are unchanged, no one cares the only difference is the supply's you get out of it, hostile BoS and bad karma. Big deal, by that point you can take on the whole order and demolish them.

Other then that there's also the lack of effect on your choices in the quests, like in Point Lookout if you go with the mansion guy instead of the scientist or the other way around, there's literally no difference at the end other then some faction turning hostile.

Yeah, you should get it, most of the bugs are fixed now. I'm still trying to get its platinum trophy though.

I quit playing because of bugs, and even post-patch my old game was too gimped to continue so I restarted. I really am enjoying it, but I wish it had a better selection of music. I only really seem to hear the same 3 songs over and over and only one of those is particularly likeable. I guess I miss the atmosphere of Fallout 3 but I like the gameplay of New Vegas.

Not sure why they bothered keeping the karma system - no one cares how good/evil you are and faction reputation is way more important and better implemented than any karma system I've encountered previously... though I still don't know why I become instantly vilified by Caesar's legion because of something I said in an environment that is - by reputation - completely impenetrable to everyone except me.

Eh, not sure I could recommend it. I loved Fallout 3, got all the DLC, played it to death. I was really looking forward to New Vegas, preordered it and all. I didn't even suffer most of the bugs other people did. But there was just something... not right about it. I really don't know what was wrong, it just didn't grab me the way FO3 did. I still haven't even got around to finishing it, I just couldn't manage to stay interested.

It's an excellent game and well worth picking up, especially if you liked Fallout 3.

The majority of the bigger bugs have been ironed out by now, though honestly, I bought it on release and didn't find them to be game breaking. In my opinion it improves upon Fallout 3 in a number of areas (notably the shooting: the iron sights mean that it's actually feasible to shoot at things at any kind of a distance without relying on V.A.T.S). I know opinion is divided on this, but personally I feel that it was the better of the two games (though Fallout 3 is still a great game).

Fallout: New Vegas is fine, some-what of an improvement over 3 in some to most areas, but that's mainly opinionated. Yes, the starting areas can be dreadful, such being Primm and the surrounding encampments, but after you get past them, you'll see that the game has a lot to offer in terms of depth.

Otherwise, it's either for you or not. Just don't bash it over a couple of bugs that have already been fixed or it's uninteresting atmosphere. It wasn't much different from Fallout 3, in fact, a lot of the original models and environmental features were recycled from 3.

I played it at release, and it was worth it even back then. I didn't encounter a single bug that actually impacted anything. A small graphical glitch here and there, perhaps.

Go for it!

in general, try implementing a two save system (this has worked out pretty well for me so far) where you use 2 saves for one playthrough, and alternate which save you use, and save after an hour or two of play
I've used a 4-5 save system after one of my Fallout 3 save games glitched, back when I only used one save per profile, and my system hasn't steered me wrong. Multiple saves are a good precaution to take.

And to the OP, definitely get NV. I never had too many bugs with my 360 version, and dear god is that game fun as all hell.

i feel F3 had a far better atmosphere and much better quests. the entire game felt better than NV but there were some things wrong with it. i found F3's factions to be black and white/ good and evil and the main story to be lacking. the one possitive thing is that the combat and the gameplay felt superb and far excedes NV

NV fell short where F3 did best and (for the most part) NV did amazing where F3 did poorly. i love the weapon mods and i like the idea of having factions that arent black and white (although the factions still seem half-assed with poor faction motives and bad character design)

in the end, F3 got me hooked on the atmosphere and the amazing mechanics but NV got me hooked with the weapon mods and the better balance of perks and skills

its weird, i feel i cant play NV without going insane with frustration over the horrible design but i cant play F3 because it all seems so limiting with its mechanics now

I love Fallout 3 and its DLC (even though Broken Steel kinda pissed all over the epic, conclusive "Good" ending) but I'm wondering about New Vegas. My roommate basically castrated that game because of some bugs that prevented her from continuing the game or something, and she hasn't touched it since. On top of that, the fact that New Vegas was bugged up the ass upon release isn't really a secret.

So my question is: Is New Vegas worth getting now? Has it been long enough that most of the bugs are fixed?
Most of the bugs are fixed, there's still a few around but they're not game-breakers anymore. Mostly related to certain perks under preforming.

Play it asap.

New Vegas was my game of the year last year, I thought it was a great improvement on 3, and I felt that the story and setting was more in line with Fallout. Lots of choice and roleplaying as well, to me it's much more replayable than 3. If you loved 3, I think it's safe to assume you'll at least like New Vegas.
I loved 3 a lot but New Vegas sucked.
There ya go, fixed your statement for you. Lol :p

Yeah, massive Lol.

Anyway... I really didn't notice any bugs in NV beyond a couple of graphical gliches but F3 crashed on me quite a bit so finding out that NV is considered the buggier game has opened my eyes to how lucky I was. Its well worth playing either way.

1. what constitutes a "proper" sequel?
2. It is far worse written (watch the extra credits episode on story structure)
3. There are NO major choices beyond which faction you join
4. Stating opinion as fact shows that you are arrogant and ignorant.
1. New Vegas continues directly after Fallout 2 and features much more references to Fallout 2 and contains factions and characters from that game that actually make sense to be featured in NV. Plus people who worked on F1 and 2 also worked on NV, and they didn't screw up the lore that way.

2. Yeah because what Extra Credits say is more important than anything else anyone says, they are the supreme beings in the video game industry and everything they say is the truth and their opinions are more valid than others.

3. What about dealing with factions after choosing your factions? What about the White Glove Society? Do you help the Omertas? Should Veronica stay in the BoS or leave? Should Boone accept his past and put his skills to good use, or use his past as an example to hate everything? Should Raul use his skills in mechanics to benefit technology or take up his guns once more in the name of his lost loved ones and become what he was in a past life? Do you help the Powder Gangers or side with Goodsprings and the law? How do you deal with Cass and her issue with the Van Graffs? What about the Sierra Madre, how are you going to get inside and once you do, what will you do with the power?

Those are just some examples.

4. Everyone states their opinion as fact all the time, the way you wrote points 2 and 3 sound pretty forced.

You know we're talking about environments here, not characters, right?
...right...?
Everything about Little Lamplight was just wrong, it's never really explained where or...how...they get new members. And no I don't buy that "children wander upon it" bullshit or "Adults from Big Town send their children there" excuse, OK yeah children are invincable but c'mon it's just so stupid.
