Bloody Mass Effect fans.

Every damn thread I see on Mass Effect turns into either a long line of rants on how the series is "too streamlined" or "too linear" or "too simple" - or a decidedly creepy series of love letters to Tali.

They are so self-entitled and so creepily devoted to their own "favourite" companions - Bioware is never going to be able to please them all, but they act as if their worlds will be ruined if they don't get what they want.
This. So much this.

Mind you, I still love the franchise but after a bit of digging and I didn't have take to sink my shovel even deep before I found out the absurd fixation of certain characters. Hell, I even loved Tali as a character but somehow the creepy fanbase manage to stole that from me.

Also, how about we stop arguing whether Mass Effect is RPG or not and just agree that it's a good game, or does the concept of changing genres make you too confused?

No, not really. I feel no shame, only disdain for the fucking stupid people that like the same things I do.
This.
I play CoD and Halo... lol, 'nuff said.
While I may be frustrated that I have to inform others that I play CoD and don't quickscope or noobtube, and play Halo and have to inform others that I am not 12 years old... I enjoy playing the games that I play, because they're fun.
Yes, I meet the occasional person that makes me /facepalm at the demographic that the game I am playing seems to attract, but so what?

I play Pokemon, and its "intended for children". I'm going to facepalm when I see a kid playing Pokemon, but I won't stop playing it.

I don't really pay attention to fanbases to be honest. Well, at least until they tell me what games I should be playing. Then that just annoys me.

The only effect that fanbases have on me, is causing me to laugh, and it's mainly two of them, the Sonic fanbase and the Bioware fanbase. There may be rational people there, but god help you if you try to find them

Oh I see, yea that makes a lot more sense now. And I agree, I think if you're a real fanboy of something you should stick to your guns and not be wishy washy about whatever it is you like. But at the same time though, like you said, they should absolutely hold the creators of their favorite series to high expectations, and not be afraid to point out what doesn't work. That's the reason why Nintendo has been releasing games from series they started 20 or more years ago, because the strong fanbase (generally) holds them accountable. I'm sure I don't have to say anything more than "Other M" as proof of what happens when a company DOESN'T respect their fanbase.
Other M has to be the most startling example, how much that game was lambasted for it's MGS2/Phantom-Menace level betrayal of the series value.

But I think most indicative was Wind Waker.
That was actually quite a good Zelda game. Quite. But not quite right, and the fanbase did not let them get away with that. Twilight Princess was a return to form even though Nintendo delayed it for a whole year at the end of development just for more polish.

So I suppose in a way Nintendo Fanboys are the best Fanbase. Because they actually improve things with their high standards and such a consensus of vision.

That's my metric of a good or bad fanbase, how good are they at holding the creative talent to account. Keeping the standard high and holding back the creator from destroying their own masterpiece with contrivance and compromise.

I suppose although Lucas' betrayal the vision Star Wars it was just so sudden, the fanbase have been so self involved in the Expanded Universe that they didn't see it till it was too late, then they couldn't stop it. It wasn't a Universe any more, it was a marketing brand for the lowest common denominator, that was an idle amusement of millions, rather than a passion for thousands.

But I'd have to say the Star Trek fanbase are worse because that was a franchise had a slow and steady slide yet really depended on its fanbase for success. If they had stayed true to the visions of the franchise and refused to accept the compromises and held the movies to the same standard as the Star Trek movies of the original cast (oh glory). But now the trekkies have failed to defend their Star Trek, as McCoy said it best it is "worse than head, his brain is gone". Star Trek has now been lobotomised to a popcorn summer blockbuster, no real reverence for the characters or the stories or the history, the significance of it, it's nothing but an overproduced SNL skit played straight not for laughs but PG-13 violence.

I can't truly claim to be a Star Trek fanboy, I wasn't there to say "Insurrection, that's bullshit. Try harder or don't try at all". I came in looking over the series compressed in time with the benefit of hindsight. I saw greatness, so much, and squandered potential.

But I will say I am a true Metal Gear fanboy, that shit means something to me. By Steven Spielberg's metric of whether games can be art, I cried at the end of MGS1, in 1999 I knew that games were an art-form.

And that's why I trumpet MGS3 so much, because although it wasn't all that good, it WAS true to the Metal Gear vision, something even Hideo Kojima loses sight of.

The Pokemon fanbase has made me facepalm over and over again. Much like how the MLP fanbase has although I'm much less invested in that show than the Pokemon series. Now that I think about it, add the Star Wars fanbase to my list.

The Valve fanbase ruined Half Life 2 and Portal for me. If they had told me that they were pretty good games I'd have been like "Yeah, these are some pretty good games."

However since I was told that they're the greatest games ever and they're absolutely perfect and there was no point in the gaming industry making another game after these releases, it just brought to the forefront all the flaws I quite happily overlook in other games I play, and dampened my experience of them.

I'm just going to go lock all my doors and windows now. Just incase.

I generally just ignore the fanbases of whatever and do what I like.

However, when fans start complaining of the sequel/spinoff/whatever that "ruined" their beloved franchise, I start to take notice.

I quite enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 2, and sought it out specifically because the fanbase complained of how confusing it was and how much they hated the new guy.

I also enjoyed the movie Spider-Man 3.

And I didn't care for the Star Wars prequels, nor the Crystal Skull, (just to prove I'm not a rampant anti-fanboy).

I'm ashamed to admit that irritating meme-parroting fans are what put me off Valve games.

In games: Valve's fanbase for the reasons mentioned above.

Non-games: Extra Credits' fanbase. I don't hate the series which is a pity because, if it were like Moviebob, then I wouldn't have any contact with the fanbase.

But, with Extra Credits, a quarter (or more) of the comments are made by fanboys/girls who think that EVERYTHING the EC crew says is just the most brilliant thing that has ever been said by any sentient being for all time......until the next episode.

I'm not saying that the series is bad and that it doesn't deserve praise. I wouldn't watch it off and on if it didn't. But their rabid fanbase makes me weep for the death of rational thought.
