VIII, closely followed by VI, IX and X are my favourites, for one reason or another. Not to say I didn't enjoy the rest loads, I just liked those one's more.

One thing I'll say about VII, is that I was really surprised that I liked Cloud. I watched AC before I played and thought he'd be a right whiny little git, but he was totally different. Poor guy, getting fanfiction-ified in his own series.

Someone other than myself noticed this?

Final fantasy 9, I just enjoyed it more than all the other ones, plus I love hunting for the treasures and chocographs. The main character also uses my favorite type of weapon the double bladed sword.

Uematsu is involved in FF13.
Composing, or just as a supervisory role? Admittedly, he only had a supervisory role in Chrono Trigger, so perhaps even if that's the case the game will be a musical masterpiece.
From what I understand Uematsu acutally finished the soundtrack because Mitsuda was working so hard on the soundtrack that it gave him an ulcer that caused him to shit blood.

In no specific order:
-FF1, Just plain old school goodness

-FF2, I loved the game mechanics concept despite it's flaws

-FF4, The first truly epic FF game to come of the series

-FF6, OK really? Do I REALLY need to explain why 6 is here...really?

-FF7, epic story and I can't help but sometimes refer it as a modernized FF6. It's heavily derived from FF6 so it's not much of a stretch.

-FF8 sorry I can't say that with a straight face

-FFTactics:WotL, Again a truly epic story and awesome gameplay. It breaks away from the traditional mold of the other FF games but still keeps it's identity of an FF game in many ways which make it the best offshoot game.

-Crisis Core, a brilliant game which is a great prequel to FF7 but has a story strong enough to stand on it's own legs and be an independent game. THIS is how prequels are done, to be strong enough to work as it's own stand alone story but still heavily tie in with the original game.

FFXII for sure... Kidding! Im kidding! No one hate me please. If im being serious, I would have to say FFVII. (How original, right?) What can I say? That game did so many things right.

I know. The reaction would be amazing.

On Topic: I'd probably go with the first one, if only because aside from a characters tendency to attack thin air if a monster dies before they can get to it, I really liked the combat system. What I also enjoyed was the story: it was simple and wasn't crucial to enjoying the game, and if I really wanted something more complex like character motivations and such, then I'd just think them up on my own. Overall, I think it's almost the LACK of story in the first game that makes me like it so much, because it leaves a lot of room for me to fill in the plot myself.

Yeah, that is one of the best aspects of old gaming. I try to aply it to regular next-gen games. For example, in Prototype I'm playing a misunderstood italian emo trying to get revenge on the people that got Brandon Lee killed with the gun-"accident". In Pokemon I'm a slavehandler making my pets fight other pets and then force my pets to drink their blood so that my pets grow stronger. In Resident Evil 5 I'm a regular American trying to conect with his step-daughter by going on a regular "American Safari" in Africa.

My favorite would have to be the first final fantasy tactics for the playstation even though the camera angle can sometimes be as awkward as a fat kid on a highwire
