Phantasy Star 4. Grew up with the series. Great plot-line spanning several games until it went online and, consequentially, on a tangent.

A few come to mind, Suikoden 2, Wild Arms 2/3, Breath of Fire IV, Persona 4, Tales of the Abyss, SMT: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon, Legend of Legaia, Chrono Cross, but I would go with Tales of Eternia. Not the BEST RPG, J or W, out there, not by a long shot, but it's the RPG that got me into the genre as a kid on the PS1. Played it a few times since, still awesome, definitely my favorite. :)

Pen and Paper D&D, but if you're talking video games then either Baldur's Gate 2 or the SSI gold box series
Who uses pens for D&D? I certainly only use pencils, what with all those stats changing and gaining of levels. :p

If I had to pick a video game RPG then it'd probably be KOTOR II.

Morrowind, because The world was so full of magic and wonder in a way that was missing from Oblivions boring forests/plains.
Remembering morrowind's world makes me feel pangs of nostalgic adventuring, whereas Oblivion's just makes me feel lonely.

Oh, and there were no damn spears in oblivion
edit (reason: misread title as best, not favourite) Morrowind might be the best, but my favorite is Fire Emblem 7. That counts as an RPG right? I replayed the hell out of that game because there are endless character combos

Personally, I love Tales of Symphonia (for a number of reasons), but I also like Final FantasY VII, Chrono Trigger, and the Mother and Persona series.

Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind, Mass Effect 2.
Mass effect II is not an RPG.

Wild Arms, Final Fantasy VII, or Valkyrie profile.

Also, System Shock II <3
Wait wait wait. Final Fantasy VII is an RPG but Mass Effect 2 isnt? Might want to think about that again.
That was actually supposed to be VIII, not 7, I made a mistake, but in any case, uhh.. yeah Final Fantasy VII is definately more of an RPG than Mass Effect II.

Protip: More stats and longer story dont mean more RPG.
Leaning more towards dungeons and dragons, having a similar setup and even monsters from the DnD series ie. (bandersnatches, sahagin's and various other assorted creatures) does.
Not just a longer story, but also a better written one, by far.
At least Final Fantasy VII's story is original. Mass Effect(as much as I loved the first one) is just ripped out of Arthur C Clarke's "The Sentinel".

Chrono Cross, easily.

I realize that I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for preferring it immensely over Chrono Trigger
Eh, I've always liked CC more than CT, too. That and Legend of Mana were my favorite Square games from that generation.

Hard to decide what's really my favorite, but KotOR's definitely up there, along with The Witcher, Skies of Arcadia, and Paper Mario: TTYD. Planescape: Torment will probably end up pretty high on my list if I ever go back and finish it, but I lost my save halfway through it a couple years ago and haven't worked up the motivation to start over from the beginning again.

Final Fantasy IX.

Goddamn was that a good game...

Second place would probably go to the Mass Effect series.

Third goes to the Pokemon series.

Opinions. Final Fantasy is known for having pretty much the same story every game.

Now stop trolling.
You clearly haven't played many of the final fantasy series then.
No two games are anything alike in story, gameplay, characters, setting or concept.
Also, i'm not trolling, I hated mass effect II.

Played it for the first time last year, still blows most everything out of the water.
Huh, maybe they did...
I wish I could get it working on my pc, but I run windows 7 so...
I'm running it on W7. Mind you, I downloaded it off Steam and Steam is good with compatibility issues...
