Ultima 7 - the black gate

1st time I played it I stumbled into the main plot half way along, robbed they royal bank, cheated the roulette wheel made the small annoying kid at the start the ultimate fighter....

An old game but one in which you had lots of freedom, hell you get a flying carpet given to you early on and a boat I think.

I've answered this many times, so I'll just give my top 5:

#1 Morrowind - The most immersive game I've ever played. Oblivion was a great disappointment to me.. and unfortunately, I think I've uncontrollably determined that Skyrim has no chance of measuring up either.

#2 Mass Effect Trilogy (pending) - Playing the role of my own Shepard (in various ways) has been one of the most immersive experiences in gaming I've ever had. And I'm confident that ME3 will live up to my hopes.

#3 Dragon Age: Origins - Many paths to follow, great characters, good stories & lore, challenging combat... I've put MANY hours in. Classic.

#4 KOTOR - Made it great to be a Star Wars fan again. Also one of the best twists in game history IMHO...

#5 SECRET OF EVERMORE - Ok.. so I'm betting most people HAVEN'T played this.. if not, you missed out. Similar to Secret of Mana... but darker, more mysterious, less of the Final Fantasy feel (good in my opinion)... and one of the greatest soundtracks ever made to boot (Jeremy Soule's first video game soundtrack.. and my favorite next to Morrowind). Possibly one of the most underrated games of the 90's... had such great settings... It was too short though. But a true gem. It deserves more respect.

Has anyone here played "Cthulhu Saves the World"? That was pretty good, but I haven't played many other RPG's.

Morrowind - by no means a polished game but I've played through this game many times since I first bought it about 5 years ago.

Demon's Souls - easily the best aesthetic design I've seen this generation, if not at all, solid gameplay, story good but non-intrusive.

Final Fantasy 12 - I love this game. The combat I'm sure is where Bioware got their ideas for Dragon Age Origins, there's more stuff to do than can be accomplished in a human lifetime. The story isn't the best in the Final Fantasy series but it holds up well.

Mass Effect 2 - while I disagree with labelling it as an RPG, more a very long and well written FPS with branching paths, it's a fantastic game. I went into it annoyed that the interactive backstory didn't explain things like why I shouldn't think krogans were an evil race or that killing the rachni queen might not have been as obvious a choice as it seemed so Bioware had to try hard to win me over. Needless to say they succeeded, the game is a near flawless FPS.

Dragon Quest 7 - characters, look of the game, just the whole game in general is awesome!
FFX - i loved the soundtrack its perfection.
Jak and Daxter 1-3 - just so damn fun! XD
BanjoKazooie - Classic. The 64 had some of the best games ever. It was awesome, get on it if you haven't yet.
Super Mario Sunshine - was just so merry! :D
lets go with a stereotype shall we?
Ocarina of Time - had everything a game wanted or needed, ticked all my boxes.
I'm not trying to shoot down your opinions but did you miss the word RPG or are you just using it rather loosely?

I would say Neverwinter Nights (1, mind you, 2 made me cry, in a bad way).

I can't really pull anything else off the top of my head, I like a lot of RPGs, but so few are in the league of NWN.

A lot of people either have Morrowind or Oblivion or both. And I really don't understand why. Morrowind was even worse than Oblivion and Oblivion was already bad. The game was huge, but there was little to explore and little to do. Every cave, every location is the same with nothing interesting. Some of the cities are big and impressive, but very few people walk around and even fewer you can interact with. Not to mention if you want to enter a building you got a freaking long loading screen every time. And because of that I didn't really want to explore. I am also blaming Bethesda here, because they had to release it on the consoles and then not tweaking it for the PC.

Also the gameplay was very unbalanced and piss easy. I could walk backwards faster than NPC's can run, making it easy to kite everything. But even if that wasn't possible a mage/rogue skill combo destroyed everything without even breaking a sweat.

And then there were the bugs... So many of them. The final straw was the one that broke my savegame.

I know 'favorite' is a subjective thing, but Morrowing, Oblivion, really? Haven't you guys ever played Gothic 2? For the record, Gothic 2 had issues also. It was still better. The only thing that (probably) made Oblivion great were the community mods. But I will not stand for an unfinished game more akin to sandbox game, where the players have to create the rest themselves.

EDIT: Minecraft is the exception here. But that's a whole different story.
