#5 SECRET OF EVERMORE - Ok.. so I'm betting most people HAVEN'T played this.. if not, you missed out. Similar to Secret of Mana... but darker, more mysterious, less of the Final Fantasy feel (good in my opinion)... and one of the greatest soundtracks ever made to boot (Jeremy Soule's first video game soundtrack.. and my favorite next to Morrowind). Possibly one of the most underrated games of the 90's... had such great settings... It was too short though. But a true gem. It deserves more respect.
If you want another underrated game not many people played... try Terranigma for the SNES which is my #1 game, not just RPG.

Others I liked that haven't been mentioned:

Temple of elemental Evil: Pc Rpg à la Baldurs Gate

Gorky 17: An old turn-based Rpg for the pc, with a sci-fi setting

These may be not my all time favorites, but all the others were already mentioned several times.

Golden Sun: 1 and 2. (High Fives the OP)

Ocarina of Time: Don't care if everyone else liked it, I did too.

Tales of Symphonia(The First One): If you haven't played it. Do it Now

Earthbound: Sooo good. Sooo difficult your first run through.

Pokemon: Any of Them. I have a lvl 100 bug team with Butterfree, Ninjask, Shuckle, Scizor, Armaldo, and Heracross all fully ev trained. (Don't know what ev trained is? I am dissapoint)

Majora's Mask: Kinda scared the first time I played it, but it is sooo much fun.

I actually know of Terranigma.. and a couple years back, I had every intention of playing it. I'm a big fan of Illusion of Gaia, and I recently played Soul Blazer a few years back and enjoyed it, so I thought Terranigma was a sure bet. I just never got around to it... maybe soon.

I'm going to name one game and one game only.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows Of Amn

That game sits on a pedestal so high, it would reach terminal velocity first before hitting the ground.
I love a lot of RPGs, but that one takes the CAKE.

Breath of fire 4, Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy 9 I'll admit I did not like FF9 back in the day because it was not like 8 & 7 but in retrospect I now realise how much fun that game was.

Only if we don't include Dark Dawn, which was dreadful!
I quite liked Dark Dawn actually.

And how could I've frigging forgotten Fire Emblem the first on GBA.
Fire Emblem was awesome. It's a little weird that the first one on GBA (I think it was first - with Hector and Eliwood) is also the only one I've played.

And you're right, Dark Dawn was good - I got it for christmas and happily played it through to the end in a fairly unbroken couple days play, I just felt it had a lot of flaws that stopped it being great. I certainly didn't feel it lived up to earlier installments in the series.
I do agree about Dark Dawn it was good but was a little disappointing in many regards like being unable to back track far, lost allot of Dijnni because I thought "oh I can always come back later"

The orginalish on GBA with Lyn, hector and Eliwood is still the best I've played, Sacred Stones was alright, rather forgettable but alright and Path of Radiance it was good very good story line but otherwise quite meh.

Also forgot about The World Ends with You, awesome, awesome game

The whole Baldur's Gate series, Shadows of Amn especially. Fantastic writing, dialogue, characters and gameplay. The best traditional pc fantasy rpg series of all time.

Ocarina of Time- great graphics for the time period, an engaging stroy, a whimsical design and asthetic and increadibly innovative gameplay, i mean you get to use freaking music! I do in fact have all the ocarina songs on my ipod. (Alright its more of an action adventure game but i want to include it anyway).

Mass Effect- great characters, gave us a new (though not exactly dependable) dialogue system and of impressive scope and scale. Some really interesting levels and missions with a world that felt lived in. The art design was very impressive with some fantastic alien races (elkor im looking at you).

Morrowind was impressive for the sheer freedom it gave you. Being set lose in a world and told go do what you like was fun. The expansions were fun as well.
