Ah the Shoot Em' up or Shmup as it came to be known, pure classic reflex testing quater eating co-op fun. Of the Shmups, have hit a low point in the 00s, but they are still more fun than a majority of games coming out today.

What is your favorite Shmup?

Since last time this thread was attempted people somehow thought it was favorite first person shooters, I will provide some example material.

For this thread I am allowing games like contra and metal slug to be Shumps.

Last shoot em up game I saw was Painkiller and I don't really remember anything else... I'm not a big fan of that genre, let's just leave it at that.
Did I not just clarify that the Shmup is NOT the FPS?!

Either Halo or Halo 3.
And before you attack me, this isn't fangirl rantings. I like Halo for the big environments combined with the tight gameplay. Half Life 2 comes in close behind 'em, but I don't like feeling stressed out by creepy environments and scare-tactic enemies. The flood are really pushing it for me, but considering the brightly lit orange cavern that is the flood lair.... Just plop me in a pretty, snowy canyon or on a tropical island with a sniper rifle and a shotfun* and I'm set.

*Freudian slip, there, but you get the idea.

PS: Please don't really dump me into a snowy canyon or a tropical island with a few guns. I'd get a cold or be sunburnt...

I'm personally gonna base my opinion on real shmups.

It's between Thunder Force V, Lightening Force and R-Type II.

My main love obviously is Metal Slug, but i'll have to go for The Red Star after that.

I thoroughly enjoyed that game, it was a shoot em up at heart, two lines of dialogue to (barely) explain what's going on, then mass amounts of russian for the rest of the game.

And obviously R-Type, Gradius, Contra and so on get a mention as they were great, but I had a genesis and never had those games back in the day.

fine, if you want to by picky, (even though Painkiller is a FPS ShootEmUp, because there's nothing more to it than shooting people up)

i'd say the original Narc in the arcade

I would have thought any game with loose structure with regards to plot etc. counts as a shoot em' up? I.e. Painkiller, the original Doom, Serious same etc....that is, all you do in those games if shoot hordes of enemies. Though, I guess you are referring only to the 'scrolling' style shooters? That is, being confined mainly to one direction of progression. Left, right, up, down etc.

Anyway! Hmm, Metal Slug definitely! Contra, Defender, and my favorite...VANGUARD:

Holy shit, you went above and beyond. Clearly you owned a Saturn, AES and Dreamcast. Plus a few cabinets.
