Ok, Coming in at number 5 is Kurt Cobain. a man who, despite having a voice like boiling nails, was able to harmonise with himself on SEVERAL occasions

4th spot belongs to Serj Tatankian (sp?) from System of a Down for the sheer level of uniqueness he puts across in his performances

comfortably seated at number 3 is Slipknot's Corey Taylor who provides screaming with a very melodic yet powerful regular singing voice. he commits emotionally to everything he does

number 2 goes to chester Beddington of Linkin Park. all the power and melody of Taylor, but with enough crossover appeal that he's a lot easier to access

and at number one, Freddie Mercury sits firmly as the GREATEST popular singer of all time

Bret Scallions, Fuel. Has such a great voice and i think that fuel would have gone a lot farther if his doumbass didn't decide to go out or solo or whatever he did.

The singer is what I generally enjoy best in a band.
Does that mean you enjoy things you don't love?

Also, among the ones already named definitely Til Lindeman (one of the few singers that can make German work imo), Serj Tankian (one of the few who can make a goat-voice work) and of course Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian, his voice can only be described as 'epic'.

My favourite is without any doubt definitely Marcella Bovio though, if you're interested in hearing her give this song a try;

She's the one singing the "My sweet love..." parts and can literaly make my skin crawl with every word.

Jeffery Nothing (Mushroomhead)- Powerful and haunting singing.

J-Mann (also Mushroomhead)- Powerful screaming, but he occasionally does it in a not so "in-your-face" way.

Till Lindemann (Rammstein)- Extremely deep and powerful (detecting a theme yet?).
In reaction to the OP; if you like powerful voices you should check out Devin Townsend (Who'se also Strapping Young Lad's singer, I think). I don't know any SYL, but he sings the voice of 'rage' on Ayreon's metal-opera The Human Equation (from which the previous song is as well). If you're interested, have a listen to "Day 3: Pain" and look for the parts sung by "[Rage]";

Seconding the Mike Akerfeldt vote.

Neige of Alcest, Amesouers and Peste Noir has a pretty good voice.

Also Aaron Gregory of Giant Squid has a very unique voice.

Liam Gallagher (Everything a Rock N Roll Singer should be PERIOD!!!!!)

Aarron Barrett (Happy, charismatic, funny, and calm/crazy vocals. Let's see you do it!)

Scooter Ward (His sorrowfull tone is what makes him connect with his fans and trust me his lyrics hit home)

Geddy Lee (RUSH *****!!! he's one of the best things we (Canada)has exported... he makes me "slappa de bass")

Freddie Mercury (If you don't know who he is.... I can't help you)

Always loved Shirley Manson (Garbage) for her vocals. She can sound powerful or vulnerable, strong or weak depending on the song. Her vocals make me believe in the song, and Butch Vig's producing on Garbage wouldn't have worked with any other woman.

Lisa Gerrard and Freddie Mercury are both stupendous, right off the top of my head. Also, the lead singer of The Killers.

RIP, Freddie.

Although many don't like the man himself, I have to say Bono, he just puts so much spirit into what he sings. Although, oddly enough, on the few occasions in which he sings, the Edge (U2's guitarist) absolutely floors me. He could probably pull the band on his own, without Bono, were it not for the fact that Bono is essentially the heart of the band. They wouldn't last long without him.

Hansi Kursch from Blind Guardian/Demons & Wizards. Simply. Fucking. Brilliant.
Could not have said it better, first time hearing Hansai sing is simply overwhelming it's so damned powerful and chalk full of emoition, for the longest time I couldn't stop listening to BG.

Out of known vocalists these would be my favourites:
James Hetfield (Metallica)
Ozzy Osbourne(Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne)
Axl Rose(Guns N Roses)
Anthony Kiedis(Chili Peppers)
Shaun Morgan Welgemoed (Seether)
Matt Sanders (Avenged Sevenfold)
Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie)
Ronnie James Dio (Dio/Black Sabbath)
Maynard James Keenan (Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle)

These guys are realtivly unknown, but spactacular none the less:
Steven Crooks (Dreadnaut): He screams at times which I'm not really into but when he sings it's amazing. He has his own sort of style: Listen to him here. [http://www.myspace.com/dreadnaut]

Joshua Alvernia (Dean Lickyer): He has such a great classic rock voice. Listen to him here. [http://www.myspace.com/deanlickyer]

just so everyone knows: i fucking HATE angela gassow's vocals. shes not bad lookin, but the vocals are terrible. i dont know why, but i cant stand them.

Vocalists that I do like:

James Hetfield-From the mid 90s to now he actually sings a lot more than he does growling like on the first four albums. its amazing what he can do with his voice.

Ozzy-He sounds like a frightened hippie who ate too many shrooms, but its still awesome.

Chuck Schuldiner-He was in Death. Nuff said.

LEMMY!

Jim Morrison, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, Bob Dylan and strangely enough, Billie Joe Armstrong, not generally the music I'd listen to but I find his voice enjoyable.

Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage is pretty much a god.
Anybody that can actually sound better live that on their record it truly a great singer.

Also Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age is pretty great as well.
His voice is just so unique and strangely mesmerizing.

Matthew Bellamy, of MUSE fame.
Thom Yorke from Radiohead.
Patrick Stump, lead singer of Fall Out Boy.
マオ(Mao) from the band SID.
Ben Gibbard, from Death Cab For Cutie.

There are more, but they are my top five vocalists to listen to, from the top of my head.

In retrospect, I realise that I'd forgotten one of my favourite vocalists ever: Justin Pierre, the lead singer of Motion City Soundtrack.
