FFVII is my favourite but I am sick of people bringing up FFVII in every thread tangentially related to Final Fantasy. Yes we get it it was over rated but now the hate is getting over rated. You don't have to be cool and different by saying I like FFVI I think it is the best or IV or IX. That is your opinion. In your opinion it did not live up to the hype. To me FFVI does not live up to the hype that a vast majority of FFVII haters give it. The question was what FF is your favourite not if FFVII is over rated as well. Even the OP is guilty of this. You ususally and I know this is a bit ironic of me saying this but it is really irritating me as it always pops up in every FF thread. If you just ignore that FFVII has a lot of hype and stop making a big deal of it it will go away. That is how hype works. They want you to make a big deal of it to spread the brand name.

I never really understood why people hate VIII so much. The biggest complaints I've heard are about bland characters and a bad combat system. For me, the best I've played is still Final Fantasy VIII. The story was grand in scale and the romantic elements in the plot, while prevalent, was done with the lightest touch. As for the gameplay, I have to say I found the Junction system to be easy to understand and use. Of course, 6, 7, 9, and 10 are all due their well deserved respect, it just amazes me why 8 wasn't given its. Ah well. =/

The one thats the last one! SO final fantasy 100000
The game was originally named Final Fantasy because Square were going bankrupt and expected it to be their 'final' game (and it had a fantasy setting). However, the game was a hit!

And the rest is very long-winded history...
Very, very long-winded indeed.

crisis-maggafunanin-core bitches!

Nah i loved it, the level up system could get annoying, but running around dodging lightning and battering the crap out of sephiroth in non turn-based fights was awesome.

my two cents

I really, really love IX. I think because it was a throwback and the last hurrah of the fantasy Final Fantasy games (if that makes sense) that didn't involve sci-fi plots.

Dirge of Cerberus - the game that made me enjoy shooters...for a time.
o_O
Somebody actually liked Dirge? Wow, I'm amazed...

FF:Tactics is king.
FFX-2 and FFVIII are both very good (and misunderstood).
FFIV and FFVII also get honorable mentions.

Worst FF game is Mystic Quest
[sub](and I would say Dirge, but it may offend the quoted poster - but it is awful)[/sub]
sadly i did enjoy dirge of cerberus too, idk what it was but i literally flew through that game in two days, i had a open weekend and just sat and destroyed that game with vincent.

it was a decent fan candy kind of game, but wouldn't rate it too high.

oh and my favorite (not best) is still 7, i've beaten that one 3 times already, im almost done with 9 soon, so that might take the spot, and 6 i'm goin to play eventually..its been hard for me to get into it.

-FFVI all the way!
-Tactics and Tactics Advance were alright, not great though, Advance 2 sucked.
-3 for the DS and 5 had too many hard bosses for me, it was always just breezing through the game until you found a hard boss that murders you many times, thenyou tediously grind to beat it, only to find another much harder boss right after it
-VII was all hype, nuff said
-VIII was alright gameplay-wise, but I quickly got lost in the story...

Those are all of the Final Fantasy games I've ever played, VI being the best overall hands-down

The one that didn't have a ridiculously over-the-top storyline with unlikable, paperthin characters.

Wait...
oh, so you can relate to/like kratos, phoenix, and master chief? and they totally are not paper thin?

and aliens invading earth is more realistic than a megalomaniac trying to take over the world? at least the second one has been attempted.

Lol.

I've only played FF3 for the DS. I don't mean 6. I mean the actual FFIII. I figured since it was the only one not to ever reach the states until then, I'd give it a look. It was ok. But it wasn't that good to me. Prefered Chrono Trigger. But after watching some Youtube footage of other games, I've decided to try my hand at other FFs. I'm thinking of starting with either 4 or 6, considering that out of all the ones available to me, they are widely hailed as the best.

Final Fantasy X is my favourite. The music was outstanding, the gameplay was fun, the story and characters were great (If not very sometimes annoying) and the romance was heartbreaking and tear worthy.

And this may be a shocker for some but Final Fantasy XIII is one of my favourites aswell, i enjoyed it's tactical and fast gameplay and it picks up a TON of pace later on. The story was interesting and the character's interactions together was interesting.

Final Fantasy XII can just go and die in a burning pit of fire.

Final Fantasy VI. Also the only one I finished.
But from what I've played of the others and read about, Six still seems to have the most compelling story. That and I always liked how Kefka wasn't some possessed human or deranged other-worldly form of evil, he was just a REALLY twisted man- and just a man. That, combined with the other human elements, combined with how they used magic- it just felt like a much more human story. That, and essentially it's a story where the Bad Guy wins, in many ways.

Final Fantasy VIII. It has a great story if you actually pay attention and have a head for piecing together stories. The characters were well defined, and the main character,Squall Leonheart, evoled from being an immature, emotionless tard to being a character who emotes well, and is quite mature, considering what's going on,what with some crazy woman trying to Divide by Zero.
The soundtrack was a work of art,with amazing pieces like;
"The Legendary Beast" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe45YhKQEQU
"The Extreme" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01mxuw31GVs&feature=related
"Maybe I'm a Lion" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8h6vt-5B2g&feature=related
"Premonition" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUu2olqwZ8s&feature=related
"Force Your Way" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SneYMN66cEs&feature=related
"Ride On" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpZ3lCJ1TVM
"The Man With the Machine Gun" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2vpqd9gKXk&feature=related
"The Landing" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h8ZeYyRkIU&feature=related
The Trigger mechanic was great, and it made sense. Junctioning, although being a number-crunching chore with the potential to destabilize the game,is stll quite enjoyable because you have to work for your Uberstats. The weapon crafting is also quite enjoyable, because that way you save your precious Gil for potions and the like. Oh,and on the topic of money, you don't get money from killing things. You get a paycheck every so often.
The setting is also quite enjoyable, because it's nowhere NEAR your classic fantasy setting. It ranges from port towns set in the 1980's and more modern cities to futuristic cities. There is only a single inhabited location that's anywhere near fantasy, and that's the Shumi Village.

I'd have to say my favourite FF game is X. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/326.166262] Then, in order, XIII, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/326.203989], VII, X-2, VIII and last but not least IX. But with IX, I only had it for a week and then I had to give it back to the person I borrowed it from.
