Final Fantasy X -> FFX-2. I kind of liked FFX-2's combat, but the story and tone was just dreadful compared to the original.
Funily enough, I've only played FFX-2 and FFVII. Now that I finally have a PS2, I'll try and acquire some of the others, but anyway.
I totally agree. I quickly stopped caring about the plot, story, characters, everything. But I thought combat was great. Even if the costumes were so skimpy I felt embarrassed to be playing. I covered up Yuna and Payne as mages, but Riku stayed as my thief or whatever.
EDIT: Woops, the thread... I know there are games out there, but usually I'm told by friends who know my tastes "the sequel sucks, stay away". Bioshock, COD, RE5, Killzone, Burnout, FIFA even. And none of us really care about sports games... But who hasn't played a FIFA game or two?
Actually, I noticed one looking on my shelf for inspiration. Spiderman 2. Awesome game, so much to do and stuff, perfect sandbox really, within the constraints of the game/character etc. But then Spiderman 3 somehow destroyed everything. Partly it was the stupid photography thing, making you stand there snapping photos in combat, and the fact that I'm missing one photo, of a boss and I refuse to restart for that. Partly it was the damn gang vs police territory war, which was kinda a good idea but thanks to there being no benefits, and the police being retarded, quickly became a grind. And they removed most of the exploration elements. I dunno, for a while it was fun, but as soon as I finished it I stopped caring. I had more fun with the first Spiderman game (based on the movie).
Sorry about the mini rant. Oh, and all Tony Hawks games after American Wasteland. American Wasteland was sliding downhill, but was still alright. After that, good god they're awful. Guitar Hero World Tour... I think that's it from me. That I can think of...
GTA IV! Ok, think I'm done now.
EDIT 2: SPYRO! Oh god, Spyro... *sobs* And Crash.
