A lot of the bands I've seen above are on my list, but one I'd like to call out is "Conducting from the Grave".
Check them out, they are fucking awesome!

Tragedy said:No one can decide the "musical value" of a genre. Tastes differ for every one. Stop being a iggonorant and listen your genre, express your opinion but dont mock people about their tastes.Psycho-Toaster said:And yes, most genres don't have any musical value.
I'm actually a professional pianist, so i know a thing or two about theory ;P I'm not trying to insult you or anyone else. If you want to listen to every genre ever, then all the power to you, just don't be all smug and act like that's a good thing, because it's not.Psycho-Toaster said:I'm going to continue with my list format because there are so many things wrong with your post.
1: I never said Nightwish and CoB's music were at all similar(Though they are, they both have clear, strong power metal influence), I simply said there's no way to objectively say one is "better"
2: Why are we arguing about CoB and Nightwish anyway? Your original point was that I am impossible because I listen to stuff other than metal and listen to metal as well.
3: "Smeared with mediocrity"? What does that even mean?
4: I'm willing to bet you know jack shit about music theory, and are just saying you do because you think metal is music for intelligent people therefore you must be intelligent and know everything about music because you listen to the best music in the world! I used to be like you, but then I grew up. By what metric are you measuring musical value?

I have to admit, it's kind of hard to imagine another doing justice to the "pirate metal" subgenre without sounding exactly like Alestorm. They seem like they filled that niche perfectly.ReservoirAngel said:Alestorm. From the painfully under-populated "pirate metal" subgenre.
Seriously, you can't tell me that you consider Evanescence metal. This is not a statement about the quality of their music but rather their style. It's pop, it's sort of goth lite, but it has nothing stylistically in common with Mastadon and Pantera, at all.VegBerg said:Hello!
What is your favourite Metal band(s)? (Just wondering.)
This also includes sub-genres like Power-Metal, Nu-Metal etc.
Mine are:
In Flames
Evanescence
Soilwork
DragonForce
Nightwish
Breaking Benjamin
edit: And Children of Bodom
True, true. But I'd like to see a strictly instrumental pirate metal band. I think that'd be all different kinds of awesome.Samoftherocks said:I have to admit, it's kind of hard to imagine another doing justice to the "pirate metal" subgenre without sounding exactly like Alestorm. It's not "bad" per se, but it's not good at all. It's a scientific fact that music influences you in more ways than one, so your head just becomes an undisciplined mess. And no, you aren't a magnificent rebel and a free soul when you listen to MANY types of music, that's just ridiculous (if that's what you were going to say).Samoftherocks said:Tagged in! If you can answer that, I will drop everything and dedicate myself to the New Polka Revolution right now...
I'd love to do some reading about this scientific fact. Please do tell (or link).Tragedy said:It's not "bad" per se, but it's not good at all. Being competent with an instrument - nay, being a master of an instrument does not qualify you in any way whatsoever to actually comment on musical theory. Yes, you can comment on specific pieces of individual music but I would only trust someone who is, for example, a master composer to comment on the merits of musical value. Even then, their ideals are skewed towards what they believe is pleasing. Hell, a lot of the best musical theorists were mathematicians who simply used maths to create high quality music. I won't deny you might know a little thing here and there but unless you were a child prodigy or some other such nonsense then generally a person can't comment on the merit of music. It's such a subjective art as to make commenting on whole genres impossible. Yes, you might dislike a band over another. But someone else might find them the perfect match.Tragedy said:I'm actually a professional pianist, so i know a thing or two about theory ;P I'm not trying to insult you or anyone else. About your other points, if you can't understand what i mean then you just can't understand, nothing wrong with that.
If Animals as Leaders took a shot at it, I think THAT would be the apex of piratey awesomeness. I love your idea of a purely instrumental group for this.ReservoirAngel said:True, true. But right now I am pretty much contented with Alestorm completely filling that subgenre and am eagerly awaiting their 3rd album.
Perhaps their mind is simply superior in that it can make links between what may at first appear to be disorganised and sparsely related. Hell, genre is hardly a link at all in many cases so your argument that those who like different parts of different genres falls flat on its feet.Tragedy said:It's not "bad" per se, but it's not good at all. This is getting totally out of hand, so i'm outta here. Believe what you like, i'm not stopping you, and no you haven't "defeated" me i just don't care about this discussion anymore, because it's not going anywhere. I'm not going to explain anything, and thanks to the anonymity of the internet, i don't need to. (also there's Google for that) Have fun.flying_gazzelle said:*snip*
You're implying juvenile angst where none exists (magnificent rebel and a free soul). The hell you take me for? A HIPPIE?!?!? Ironically, I like Jefferson Airplane.Tragedy said:It's not "bad" per se, but it's not good at all.
