My favourite was the SNES controller. It felt right and it never came close to breaking.
Least favourite goes to the Dreamcast controller.

Good vibes for the 360 in here. It is a well-engineered beast.

I note no-one is cheering for the Sixaxis.
I am. I like it when they try some damn innovation, but don't reconfigure the whole thing.
Well, copy someone else's innovations anyway, right?
Like I said, try something different, but not go into the territory of gimmicky or useless.
I like that idea - "gimmick". Check this out: my dictionary defines gimmick both as "a device to attact publicity or atttention" and also as "an ingenious mechanical device".
So you're being a grammar Nazi.
Nonono - zero sarcasm intended. I actually do like that idea. I think it sums up the Wii's control mechanism perfectly as both a device to attract publicity/attention and as an ingenious mechanical device.

EDIT: actually I am a severe grammar geek. Just not on message boards.

Forgot to mention - the DDR control system is simple and classic. It may only be four arrows, but having to press them with your feet is the key.

Also, I'm slightly obsessed with the beatmania IIDX controller. So hard to get used to, but there's a huge payoff when you get good at it.

Gotta love those experience-altering peripherals.

Ok, I'm sorry, but the original Xbox controller is the best. And yes, I'm talking about the one that used it's own ZIP code. Those things just felt SOLID in my hands, and that's what a controller should weigh.

Well, call me boring but I like the PS2 controllers, but that's pretty much because they're the ones I'm most accustomed too. I like the NES controller as well, that was funky back in the day.

Don't be sorry.

I base any decision about whether a controller is any good based on 1 criteria.....can it play street-fighter. I have played various incarnations of old sf on various systems and heres my verdict in descending order....

1:pS1/2/3 pad: this is the perfect controller for sf cos its balanced, the buttons are just where you need them and it aint gonna cramp your hands after a few rounds.

2:snes pad: much like the PS pad but lacking in those handy extra shoulder buttons.

3:megadrive/genesis 6 button/saturn pad: takes some getting used to but once you do it works really well(cept for the fiddly lp, lp, lk, hp super combos.

4:360/controller S: can work but the triggers feel wrong and d-pad is crap.

5:Gamecube: buttons are wrong, d-pad is fiddly

6:pSP/DS: Too unresponsive, d-pads just seem to get confused

7:Dreamcast: The figurative father of the x-box pad is a bloody nightmare and after 2-3 rounds your hands feel like you've actually been in a fight...shame cos its an awesome console.

These are my personal opinions, so feel free to disagree.

OK, since you ask. ;)

I disagree that the PS1 / PS2 pad is the best controller for Streetfighter / fighting games. It's not at all. It's alright, but the D-pad gets a little painful after a while. The second generation Saturn pad is probably the best pad for fighting, with the Hori Real Arcade sticks being the best sticks for those games.

PSP - yes, it's crap. D-pad is unresponsive and the analog nub is ridiculous. DS - no, the DS controls are perfect. Simple, snappy and intuitive.

Dreamcast - no. I can't understand the hate. It fits into the hands very nicely and can be held for hours without any discomfort.
