Favourite or best controller?

I suggest that anyone claiming that the 360 sticks are responsive please go play a fighting game like Soul Calibur 4 on it and then go play it on a DS3 or Sixaxis or DS2. Those sticks are not more accurate. The two things they did get right were the triggers and the overall contour of the controller.

The D-pad on the DS3 is just good, You press up and right and you diangle to the right and up. With the 360 its retarded cause its just as bad as a joystick. That said the only complaint I could have with the ps3 controller is that the right stick is a tad bit close to the buttons. Also the DS3 grips so much better then my 360 controller.

My favorite game pad of all time is the original square NES game pad, I have played on it forever, its simple, sleek, and indestructible, sure its not ergonomic or comfortable, but it Never really pokes your hand or anything like the game cube controller. I have about 10 of them now, and the original two I got with my first NES when I was 10 years old still work perfectly.

a beautiful feat. Just don't spill orange soda on your controller it'll still work but it'll be hard to get the pause button to work in a pinch.

Dreamcast controller!
Memory cards (Virtual Memory Units) snap into each and they double with the LED screen so you can check stats on your controller that you would usually have to pause the game just to look at.
ex-Lets say you're playing Resident Evil 3, and Nemesis has just ***** slapped you. Are you ok for health or do you need some weed...er, herbs to heal with. Without breaking the flow of the boss encounter, or pausing, all you need to do is glance at your controller screen! You'll also know how much ammo you're stocking.
But the Dreamcast controller really comes in handy when playing any (American) football game. You can play call on your controller so your opponent doesnt know what play you're going with.

...Granted, you do need to buy a VMU to utilize this function, though who buys a consol nowadays without at least 1 memory card?

If you're willing to deal with eye-strain-o-vision to see what the screen is saying that's all well and good.

Personally I prefer the 360 controller, it just sits right, all the buttons are in the right place, although the guide button could do with being a little less sensitive

1. N64, easily the most comfortable controller i've ever held
2. NES, Such simplicity, such greatness
3. PS2/Gamecube, this is a tight one, both are great to hold and play with

Top 3 Worst:

1. Wii, no comment here, it just sucks.
2. PS3, Its to small and annoying
3. Xbox, Its to big and clumpsy

I know I'm way in the minority on this one, but I dug 'The Duke'. It's size was perfect for my hands, and now I feel like every other controller I've used since then feels like I could rip it apart. I'm pretty unco-ordinated, and I found that I've had the easiest time with The Duke.

I was really hoping the 360 would have had a big Duke-style controller, I would have bought it... I'd probably be the only one, though.

HOW IN THE WORLD COULD THE PS3 CONTROLLER BE IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD??? all it asks of you is to do the same thing with your left hand that you do with your right hand. The DualShock 3 is the best by far. none of the added weight of the controller cord, the easy access to all of the buttons, but not the unnecessary, "I might break this little thing" light weight feel of the ps3 controller (before dual shock)

second on my list is definitely the N64 controller. you rarely needed the D-Pad, and being left handed, it was the only chance for me to use my natural trigger finger.

The ps2 had one of the finest controllers of all time... mine still works and it was from the original..which i got two weeks after the ps2 came out. That being said.. i like the 360 controller a lot as well. If only the would make the system as resilient as the controller. I also hated that they packaged the 360 with a wireless that runs on batteries and no charger.

Wow, no love at all for the Saturn's Analog controller. That thing was amazing, certainly my favorite of all time. Closely following are the Dreamcast, SNES, and GCN.

Worst of all time: Well as long as we don't count the Jaguar it would have to be the Sony line of controllers. Blech.

I?m also a big fan of the Xbox 360 controller, it?s super comfortable and works great for all games.

The PS2 controller was a bit to small for me so I feel the Dual Shock from Logitech perfected it buy adding a bit of meat to it.

The Duke was cool, I always liked it only the black and white buttons could be a pain. Good thing they were hardly ever used.

All kidding aside (...maybe), I'm going to be the crazy one and say I like any controller, including the orange buttoned wonder above, given enough time to get used to it's quirks and foibles. I absolutely reviled the N64, PS1, and PS2 controllers at first, but given many hours of the original Smash Brothers and Grand Theft Auto in it's many 3D forms, they grew on me. On that note, I haven't had enough time with any Xbox or any more recent Nintendo system to get past revulsion, but someday, maybe I will. Or someday I'll find out I truly hate one of those. That'd be nice too.

And I was never a fan of the Dreamcast or Jaguar controllers, either.

That said, and I'm sure this'll come as a shock to all, but I'm going to have to say my favorite is my unnecessarily six-buttoned Sega Genesis controller. The D-pad squeaks and clicks, the B has been used so often it simply refuses to work anymore, X, Y, and Z have always been useless so far as I and my games are concerned, but give me one of those any day, and you will see some magic.

Or I'll die immediately, as most Genesis games were designed to be impossible.

Controllers are so important to gaming. Get it right, and the game instantly becomes more enjoyable!

My favourite of all is probably the Japanese style rounded Saturn pad (not the earlier, more angular one). It's just perfect for fighters, shooters, and anything retro.

I also love the 360 controller (except for the D-pad, which thankfully hardly ever needs to be used), the non-analogue PS1 pad and the Dual Shock 2, SNES pads, and the Xbox S and Dreamcast pads.

The original Genesis pad was horrible, but the replacement six-button one was lovely. The Jaguar's is far and away the worst pad of all time.

Nonono - zero sarcasm intended. I actually do like that idea. I think it sums up the Wii's control mechanism perfectly as both a device to attract publicity/attention and as an ingenious mechanical device.

Forgot to mention - the DDR control system is simple and classic. It may only be four arrows, but having to press them with your feet is the key.

Also, I'm slightly obsessed with the beatmania IIDX controller. So hard to get used to, but there's a huge payoff when you get good at it.

Ok, I'm sorry, but the original Xbox controller is the best. And yes, I'm talking about the one that used it's own ZIP code. Those things just felt SOLID in my hands, and that's what a controller should weigh.
