Let me try and explain furries as I understand them - being one myself.
Basically, humanity has had a long long LONG practice of associating elements of itself with the animal kingdom. We describe people as being 'sly as a fox', for example, because we see characteristics of ourselves in foxes, and characteristics of foxes in ourselves. This connection has colored our art work and myths, with talking animals, anthropomorphic artwork, and so on.
Furries take this interconnectivity and play with it in a roleplaying and erotic space. Some furries don't do erotic things at all. They just enjoy bringing humanity and nature closer together. Other furries - like me - have the fetish be a part of an intensely erotic place, if only because physical and mental traits that we find attractive are expressed in a more appealing or extreme way by idealized anthropomorphic creatures.
A more nitty gritty example: My favorite anthropomorphism is that of the dragon. (Yeah, okay, I'm a scalie, not a furry, SUE ME, they're similar enough). I think dragons epitomized things I find incredibly sexy. Wings are great for cuddling, prehensile tails are great for hugs/erotic manipulation, and the character of a dragon is dominant and hoarding, which appeals to the part of me that likes to be kept, for that gives me a feel of value. And finally, scales have a very fascinating texture to me.
It's not entirely rational, but it's not completely incomprehensible.
Also, dragons are loaded, so if I had one for a boyfriend, I'd be fucking rich!
