So today the Japanese magazine Famitsu released a bunch of new screenshots and some updates with story events and other little tidbits of information.

At the Game Awards there was a new trailer which didn't show a lot of new stuff, but it did tease a few new things that haven't been seen yet. It does look like Tifa's model was again updated and smoothed out as well as Aerith's, and both girls are looking really good for the upcoming game.

The screenshots in the Famitsu article above further show more of Sephiroth, as well as an explaination of a new villain we saw only briefly in the TGS trailer. The new soldier is called Roche and apparently is crazy on a motorcycle, which would be interesting if he was a boss that you have to deal with Via the motorcycle mini game.

This Midgar section is looking really really good. I just hope that the promise of how expanded it will be doesn't turn out to be a bunch of hot air.

I read from a youtube comment that made the interesting suggestion that since this game is going for the episodic format, then the other parts of the game will come out as DLC/Expansions rather then make them separate games.

The progression system seems pretty extensive (We don't know if it's deep yet). If they pace the progression similarly to the original I don't see how they wouldn't flesh out midgar. The trailers imply avalanche is a bigger organization than before so maybe the expanded content comes from helping Avalanche grow only for your work to be crushed by the plate. It'd be frustrating for some but it could help drive home the impact of that moment even more.

Wall market and the infiltration of shinra tower are obviously going to be beefed up. I hope we get to use Red XIII in this game, he comes in right at the end of Midgar so he might be cutscenes only. It's interesting that square hasn't revealed him in any of the promos yet. Red and Rufus are the only characters from this section that haven't been revealed yet.

I doubt it. At least for now. Square probably wants to take advantage of next gen so they are just releasing what they have finished now to earn some money and please fans before the new consoles arrive. If they do go the episodic route I hope its sucessful, they'd be the first AAA dev to try it since Valve.

That's true. The screen shots of the Materia growth AND the weapon growth means that there will certainly be enough grind in the game, but I dunno if that can count as game length. Though i will 100% this game for sure because, any time I get to play more Final Fantasy 7 is fine with me.

We also haven't seen Scarlet, Reeve, Hojo, or Jenova. Which I dunno if we'll see any of Jenova in this game, though you do technically see her in the Lab section of the Shinra Building.

It's gonna be a trilogy. Maaaaybe a quadrilogy if they wanna be thorough but I doubt it.

The amount of data needed for the assets makes that highly improbable.

So is the combat gonna play like Kingdom Hearts I haven't fully grasped the gameplay combat.
Not at all.

The way it works is like this: You have two different attack buttons that you can use to perform basic attacks with the characters (though some characters behave differently they all have the same concept) As you hit with basic attacks you fill a blue meter under your character's HP gauge. This is ATB, and it can build two total charges. You then use quick select or a full menu to select more powerful attacks or magic for that character to perform. Basic attack damage is minimal and you wanna be using your ATB attacks.

So the combat cycles between using basic attacks to fill your ATB ASAP then spending ATB on attacks that will actually hurt/stagger the enemy.

Additionally there is a dodge and a block button that can be used to actively try to prevent extra damage dealt to any character you control. You control one character at a time in combat, but can use a hotkey menu to issue ATB commands to your other party members, or tapping a shoulder button will instantly swap the character you are controlling.

I am trying to comprehend how this will work on the more crazier fights in the games. Like remember the WEAPONS Superbosses like Ultima, Emerald, and Ruby? And especially Safer Sephiroth?

And is still gonna be three party members at once?

They've shown boss fights already and they get pretty crazy. But luckily if it gets too chaotic, each time you bring up the command menu time freezes so you can take a breath and plan it all out. As of now it is only 3 characters at once.

You mean the directorial mastermind behind FFX-2, all three FFXIII's and Mobius FF, aka 4 of the least well-regarded main series titles and one gacha game?

Honestly don't see the problem. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? /s

I remember the outcry when Aerith got updated the first time, hoo boy. The article didn't really give me much in the way of screencaps, what ways were they smoothed out? Couldn't quite tell...

I feel like Sephiroth looks a little too slim and pretty-boy looking in the face. Something about it is much less intimidating than I expected. Maybe he'll get an adjustment down the line as well?

"Look, I know overlong development cycles and overambitious scope have caused significant problems for a lot of Final Fantasy games, but this time it'll work!" - Somebody at Square Enix, deciding how the remake of Final Fantasy VII should be.

At least they decided to use Unreal Engine 4 instead of one of their own engines this time.

I could have sworn we catch a glimpse of Hojo's back or something in one of the trailers but maybe my mind just invented that at some point. I hope they don't show Jenova in the tank. It may have been a limitation of the hardware at the time but not directly showing her was kind of neat. The main characters passed by something that is super important but don't realize it yet. Not showing it to the player also makes you assume its unimportant. It will make going to the Nibelheim reactor spookier too if thats the first time you see the creepy body horror Jenova stuff.

Yeah its saving grace, you know, if FFX-2 wasn't tied to FFX in anyway and toned down the creepy fanservice it would actually be a pretty darn good game.

Is it really creepy if the game was made for Teenage Boys that are into that?

I mean Anime/Manga does it all the time?

This isn't anything to do with anything or anything... but reading that reminded me how much reading Japanese is such a brain-cell destroying experience for me.
