I they should bring out 6 on ds simply because they remade it for gameboy so i'd expect them to do the same for ds. Also its the only one i've never played.

Being totally serious about this, all I want is a handheld that plays Final Fantasy 1 thru 7, possibly 9, as well as Chocobo's Dungeon, Chocobo Racing, and FF Tactics (all). If I could get a portable device that let me play all the FF games I love, I wouldn't need any other handheld, nor would I pine for any other games. Oh, but no touch-screen please. D-Pad and buttons, all you need.
Get a psp and a ds i know its not one but ds lites and second hand psps aren't that expensive that way you are covered
on psp for 1,2,7,8,9 and then ds for 3,4 and according to this article maybe 5&6.

Why the hell not? FFIVs remake was truly a epic remake of the original. Think lightning wont strike twice?
Not been a fan of any of the remakes on the DS, they generally look like ass and I don't wanna see the same happen to FFVI

(Note: I'm going to use the "real"/JP numbers.)

@dmase,
FFVIII was like a (then) current gen remake of FFII. It had some serious gameplay problems (Drawing Magic) and an alien to its American audience character progression system (Junctioning Magic, Monsters leveling with you, etc). Like FFII it had a cliched story except with the required post-FFVII batshit crazy elements and post-FFVII angsty mind-f#&@ed characters. SE keeps saying, believeably in my opinion, that remaking either PSX FF title would just be too time consuming.

@CrystalShadow,
The FFVI GBA port was decent compared to the PSX version. The loading times weren't god awful for one thing. The CG movies in the PSX version were neat, but didn't really add anything and if you look at them today they're low-res MJPEG and pretty terrible looking. The GBA remake did have some serious problems with handling Mode 7 airship framerates and the music was noticeably degraded for some reason.

As for the OP's thing from Square-Enix... If you look at the environments in FFIV and compared to to FFVI you'll notice some big differences. FFIV stayed pretty close to previous 8-bit JRPGs. The towns, dungeons, world map, etc all were tile based. You could either walk on a tile or you couldn't. There were some exceptions like the hidden walkway things in the Land of Summon Monsters, but you could find that in FFIII on the NES. This makes for a pretty straightforward 2D to 3D conversion. You could see everything in the environment in FFIV on the SNES so moving that to 3D on the NDS can provide the same basic experience.

I'd say the same thing about FFV as it didn't improve much graphically, so the "technical problems" there leave me a perplexed. Maybe it had somewhat heavier use of transparent overlays and layering? It's been quite a while since I played it.

Anyway, contrast this with FFVI's first half hour. There's heavy use of walking behind buildings. The use of layering is much more extensive. The game is still built with 2D tiles and not at all three dimensional, but provides much more feeling of depth. Think about Locke's escape from that Imperial occupied town early in the game. Sure, the hidden paths and walking behind buildings is kind of the same as FFIV's hidden paths. But moving to 3D you couldn't just do a 1:1 conversion. There's a tile that's part of a building...and you can walk behind it.

Maybe keeping the camera fixed in 3D might provide a similar experience, but it would be a lot more work. They couldn't just toss Matrix the artwork and gamestuffs and have them remake it in their engine.

So while Toriyama might talk more about how he'd like to make FFVII HD, but they can't justify the huge resources needed to do it, FFVI might not be much to look at by comparison (in some people's opinions, probably primarily people who came into the series with FFVII) it still wouldn't be a minor undertaking.

I could understand FFVI being too large to fit onto the DS with 3D graphics, but FFV? If anything that game is LESS sophisticated than FFIV. For one, it doesn't actually have a plot, so that makes things easier.

Anyway, as usual, Square Enix is a company that is literary strangled by their own technology.

As it turns out, the answer could be both "yes" and "no." Yesterday, Square-Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto updated the Square-Enix Members' Twitter account [http://twitter.com/SQEX_MEMBERS_JP] in response to several questions from fans of the studio's games. Previously, Hashimoto had said that non-iMode releases of the publisher's Ever Heart Odyssey and a downloadable release of the SNES title Seiken Densetsu 3 were both "undecided."
God I hope they release Seiken Densetsu 3. As far as I know it was never released out side Japan. And while I'm usually against imulators in general, that was never released here so I got a rom of it with an English patch. And that game is awesome. I would totally support an official English release.

And for those of you who don't know Seiken Densetsu 3 is the sequel to Secret of Mana.

also I would like to see remakes of FF V-VI, as long as they are complete remakes like the DS IV was.

"Technical difficulties?"
Oh please Squeenix. You are the biggest JRPG developer of all time.
I call absolute bullshit on their statement; if they were going to convert the original games to a new 3D system ala FF4, they would have to redesign the game engine and some of the logic systems to accommodate the new system. Meaning: new coding, ie, NOT modifying old coding.
Going on that logic, for their statement to be true they would have had to at least try to develop the game already, and gave up for some reason.

How about the alternative scenario? Where they literally do nothing other than attach a 3D graphics engine to an old game? If they're screwing that up, then it means Squeenix actually doesn't want to invest any time into developing it.

Same result either way. Their dev teams are probably swamped with other new releases, but if that's the case, why not just come out and say so? Nobody is going to doubt them for it.
Their statement reeks of double-talk.

I imagine, by technical problems he was not talking in a hardware/software sense, but in the business strategy sense.

Look at it this way. Until recently the developers would have been busy developing Four Warriors of Light, which was finished sometime late last year. The game would take a minimum of a year to develop, more likely 2 or maybe even 3. If I'm not mistaken both were larger than FF4, though I could be wrong I haven't played them yet. With the 3DS (likely) less than 6 months away, launching it for DS would be a mistake as that timeline would place the launch of the next remake well over a year (minimum) into the next hardware cycle. No one knows what the effect of the 3DS will be on the DS market yet. It could crush the DS platform like the DS did to the GBA or it could be largely ignored meaning the DS will still have plenty of steam. There's too many unknowns to even have a semi-reliable guess at it. Cost, Features, and control style are all huge factors. All we really know about the 3Ds is it will have a 3D screen or two. The economy of a DS game is far too risky to release a game as big as that post 3DS launch.

On the other hand, it is likely too early to start such a major project for the 3DS for several of the reasons stated above (unknown adoption rate mostly). Especially considering it will likely require a new engine, or at least heavy modification to the current one, because the hardware will likely be able to push a lot more polygons and have new graphical effects that will quickly become standard on the new platform.

Squenix likes taking it's time with new hardware, new flagship FF titles don't usually land on a platform within the first couple years of it's lifespan. If they do go 3DS for their next set of remakes, I'd expect to see a new Crystal Chronicles, a sequel to Four Warriors of Light, or maybe even a 3D remake of FF1 or FF2 as a sort of engine test before a proper FF5 or 6 remake.

Final Fantasy V is my second favourite Final Fantasy. It would be really cool if this title would get a DS release.

Given Square Enix's track record on re-releases, I'd say there's little or no reason to worry about these two games not making it to a portable platform in the near future. I mean Square Enix basically keeps it's reputation alive by mining their classics again and again.

I also think that you can pretty much bet a FFVII remake will surface at some point in the next 5-7 years, despite Squenix's insistence otherwise. Squenix is only as good as their back catalog, and Parasite Eve remakes will not keep them in the black.

I wish they'd make it multi-portable release. I could at least give it a shot if it was on the PSP.

If it becomes DS exclusive, I fear they'll try and shove that stylus everywhere they can, which is a big nono for me.

What tech limitations could there be? Kingdom hearts looks shit hot on the DS, and is only 345mb big, given you can get micro SD cards that are 8GB big, and you can use the R4 card on the DS, which are that big, there's no reason why there would be tech limitations.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. FF5 has a certain type of transparency effects in the water and fog that are apparently hard to duplicate. I've played it on various emulators and they came up with different results. It was remedied in later versions but if they want to port the game again they'll probably have to figure it out again just like the Emu-coders had to.

The way I remember it FF5 also had different enemy death-fade-outs and special attack animations from its brethren.

Every later generation SNES game will probably have its problems though. FF4 was their first foray, in FF5 they'll probably have tried some more advanced stuff and in FF6 they made it even flashier than that. So problems cropping up is something they should've expected from the start I reckon.

ps.
There isn't a game in the FF library I've played as extensively as V. The chance to play a proper version of it again might make me finally buy a DS. Weren't there also Shining Force ports on that thing as well?

Just put it on the PSP. They put 1&2 on the PSP but every other remake has been DS. Why?
Because it's a bigger market. There are just more DS than PSP.

Also, I don't think they'll do a full 3D remake, at least for FF6. That's a MASSIVE game, and there'd be so much to remake! Also, that was a perfect 2D game graphics-wise, I hope they just release it like Chrono Trigger was on DS, maybe with extra dungeons or something.

But it wasn't. The cutesy character models and horrendous voice acting pretty much poisoned the whole experience.

If they would actually treat the source material with a little respect, I'd love to see V brought to a new audience; it barely edges out IV as the best SNES Final Fantasy, but hardly anyone played it since it was never released in America in its own time. Players simply aren't drawn to its direct ports because the nostalgia factor that IV and VI have going for them just aren't there.

Maybe an updated version will get more people excited about the 'lost' Final Fantasy. I do wonder what it could be that would be making the update technologically infeasible, though.

To be honest, 5 works more as a DS remake. Seeing as it would fit quite nicely with a similar style that they implemented for 3 and 4. Although I would have liked to have seen 4 get a more serious design change ¬___¬, golbez is not meant to be cute.
While 6 on the other hand, needs a more realistic graphical overhaul. So therefore I believe that the PSP is the best format for it, if they are still adamant about making it a portable game.
Also it would be nice to see little tech demo's of each games best boss battle in the crystalis engine. Just saying.

PLEEEEEASE port FF6, Squeenix! I want to finally play it!

And personally, I love the cutesy style they used for the DS FF remakes (and Hikari no 4 Senshi).
