Some context here for a certain age group this was pretty much the first JRPG many of us came across (actually it was my third) but it was certainly one the largest and most expansive story's we'd played in computer games. For a lot of people it really introduced interactive storytelling to the masses. Yes I accept there are problems these days mainly its aged badly in terms of graphics and taking into context of modern games and now we know about other games of the time it's probably not as revolutionary as once thought.

However 14 year old me didn't know that to 14 year old me this was one of the greatest experiences in computer games and he could barely find anything like that in those pre-internet days. You can't remove that feeling though rational thought.

Am I excited? Probably the only thing that could force me to buy a next-gen console.

Cool. I'm interested in seeing and playing the remake when it gets ported to the PC or maybe PS3(okay, that's probably not gonna happen at this point). As much as I enjoyed FF7, it's not enough to convince me to buy a PS4.

So they're gonna do their squeenix thing of making everyone an emo supermodel "perfect" looking, will add voice acting to it and when barrett does his weird monkey chest beating thing in technicolor and HD, this might just be another "HA HA HA" incident that will irreversably color your view of the "perfect" final fantasy 7 and you'll wish you never asked for this because now, every single cringeworthy thing that you forgot about gets thrown under the magnifying glass, revealing all the wrinkles and cracks on the surface you once thought to be perfect.
Enjoy.

Either way, I don't get why this is such a big deal and why squeenix were such colossal assholes about this whole ff7 thing, first releasing that video but then staunchly denying that they'll make a remake for bogus reasons and then cashing in on the name at every possible opportunity instead of giving it a rest.

Either way, there it is. Finally.
Now we can finally get this over with and move on.

"Squeee!" says about all I can think of for me. I've been waiting for this. Can't wait to see more.

Hope they don't butcher it, but I will be buying it and playing it as soon as I possibly can.

Well this is certainly some good news to wake up to, I'd never thought I'd see the day.

Regardless how this one turns out, here is to hoping while going through this game they realize "Hey, we used to make good ones that actually make sense didn't we?"

Honestly, I think Final Fantasy VII is the game that needed to be remade. I mean, look at the rest of the Compilation. Advent Children. Dirge of Cerberus. Crisis Core. The original is the redheaded stepchild of its own legacy. It had the misfortune of coming at an awkward time, when 3D first became a thing for the series.

I suppose my main concern is that this is going to be more than just a fresh coat of paint. Not necessarily a bad thing - the last time a game got a graphical upgrade and only a graphical upgrade, it completely disenchanted me of the original. Certain things might have to change. Vincent and Yuffie becoming mandatory characters for example, if they want to go out of their way to patch up plotholes. And in all honesty, some of the humor from the game might not translate well...

Hopefully this goes better than the disaster that is the PC port. Also I hope they fix the combat so that Cait Sith slots aren't the go to option for everything

I didn't believe it would ever happen. And now I am excited! Yes, I'm fully aware that I'm seeing this through my nostalgia goggles, but as someone who experienced the whole game when it was released (thus not knowing all the key scenes), I am really, really happy right now. There's just a special connection I have with the time when FF 7, 8 and 9 were released.

Sure, the original isn't perfect. But F that, I'll have a great time with the remake!

Yes, I admit it: I'm hyped about this! Espacially if they release it on PC too, because I left the console world with the PS1!

And if over- or underrated, doesn't matter. For maaaaaany people - including myself - FF7 was the first encounter with the franchise.
Because of that FF7-haters can go home, I don't care. I played all "previous" Final Fantasy after FF7. I even "hacked" my TV to get the "wrong" copy of FF-Anthology NTSC-Version (I'm in Europe and we are PAL) working. And yeah, I probably see my favorite in FF6 now. But FF7 will always be in my heart!

HOLY SHIT FINALLY!

I mean seriously fucking finally, they did something right.
On the other hand I didn't really like the voice in that trailer or the dialogue, it felt to try-hard to be gritty.

but fuck that. REMAKE!

Cool for the fans, but how long is this going to take to get released? This is Squeenix we're talking about afterall.

Still, a lot of frogs coming down from the sky over here. Next up; Capcom announces RE2make.

But why? Like seriously, why? What's the point of making the 100th remake of FF7? Is Square officially more creatively bankrupt than EA?

My bad. I mixed it up with another FF.

But... this is the first remake?
They did some spin offs a couple of years ago but aside from a PC port FF7 hasn't been remade ever?
What are you talking about?

Well remake it might be, but weren't there a shitload of remastered versions for every console since the PS2?

I might be wrong and in that case I take it back. I might have confused with with something else.

First the Last Guardian, now this?
I would go out and buy a PS4 as soon as the money was available, they have given me plenty of reason to buy one. That being said, I think I'm going to sit on my hands a little while in case these games take so much longer, they get re-announced for the PS5.

As for the trailer, that narrator sounds so incredibly uninterested, I hope that's not the voice of Cloud or Sephiroth.

In regard to FF7 getting remade in general, I don't think it will get stellar reviews, not because it's a bad game, but because the material is no longer unique. FF7 was a product of it's time and it was special when it came out, the themes expressed within have since become the standard (so it wouldn't feel like anything special to gamers or reviewers today). I'll still buy it but I hope they keep Cloud's personality more like it was in the original rather than sharpening the edge.

Also between this and the whole taking feedback and actually listening to it throughout the development of FFXV [http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2015/3070.html], my love hate relationship with Square Enix tilts toward the love side, for now.

People have been asking for it for years. I'm pretty sure there's some pent up energy being released.

I also seriously doubt people are claiming it can cure cancer or is the literal second coming of Christ. Second coming of FF7, surely, but not Christ. It's a good game. Enough so that people love to talk about it and want more of it. That doesn't make it overrated. If anything I'd claim the other FF games are UNDERrated in comparison, rather than claiming that FF7 is itself overrated.
Again, what makes it overrated is the level of fetishisation of what is a very good, competent game. As WolvDragon pointed out: if it were released today then it wouldn't get anywhere near the amount of adoration. And that's not down to aged graphics or whatever. vagabondwillsmile brought up what I think is both the reason for this and the problem: because it was the first 3dJRPG that people played tons of people totally lost their minds and are incapable of actually looking at its weaknesses as well as its strengths.

I want this to be good because frankly after the huge disappointment of seeing what they've done to Final Fantasy XV I need some positive FF news. But the cynic in me says to be cautious. This is actually a hell of a risky venture they're taking on here...
