Sometimes I wish the earth WAS flat just so I could push idiots over the edge.
Also because then this would be Discworld and that would be awesome!

Odd, they both certainly let ME know when they were having one! XP

First off I wanted to say hi! I look around the forums a lot and decided to make an account only to realize I have been one for a while...
Now I'm sorry if this has been posted before but I couldnt find it after looking around
Website- http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php
Yes people believe this.
Somewhat related video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc0trwHSRIA
At first their ideas somewhat make sense but then your mind kicks in....I usually like to let other people have their beliefs but this I don't even know what to think. I don't know what else to add this is just crazy.

Oh and again, Hi! :D
Flat earth pff there so much worse then that

Sad thing is people think Kent is telling the truth and not swindling them out of money

I can prove the Earth is round with simply logic.

The shadow of the Earth on the Moon is always round.
There is only one shape that constantly makes a round shadow, i.e. a sphere.
Therefore, the Earth is a sphere.

If they want to go with "from our general point of view it looks flat" well from my general point of view that building several hundred meters away looks 1 inch tall. Is it? No.

There is an easy way to prove whether or not his theory is correct, based on the video.

1. Go to Argentina.
2. Get a boat/aircraft
3. Head for Antarctica

Why Argentina? According to the 'disc model' provided, Argentina would be closest to the edge of the world. That edge, having a barrier on it to stop water from pouring out, would be Antarctica if the Arctic is the center of the disc. The test is to see what happens if the plane/boat makes its way to Antarctica, aka the barrier of the world, and see if this barrier is penetrable, and if so, if there is a sheer drop on the other side.

In Science, theories are explanations of facts, and therefore can be twisted when facts are disproven. To disprove a theory fundamental facts have to be disproven to the point where the theory can no longer be twisted to maintain the theory.

So, at the ice barrier that is Antarctica, if the Flat Earth theory holds up, there should be either an impenetrable field or a sheer drop at the end of the world when you try to pass Antarctica.

If, however, instead you encounter Australia... its back to the drawing board.
Don't even have to go that far. Just take a look at a ship's masts on the horizon. The forward mast is lower than the main mast, which wouldn't happen on a flat earth. Also, during a lunar eclipse, the earth's shadow is curved.

Proving these nutjobs wrong is a piece of piss. You can do it with two sticks and a friend in a different country... Kudos if you know how and what was particularly amazing about its discovery...

You don't need a diffident country
Hell Eratosthenes did it with 2 citys that are relativity close together
and he was dam close to the real value

It does not make seance on any level to me to many thing they say just shatter physics.
If you think that's bad, think about this:

Their entire belief system hinges on a global conspiracy that has controlled information for centuries, from the first estimations of the Earth's size to airplane flight patterns to the space program.

Not only is this an extreme conspiracy that dates back thousands of years, but it's been kept silent by everyone from the top to the ground level. And for what? To what end? What possible benefit is there to hide the truth?

At least with 9-11 conspiracy theories and things like the JFK assassination, there's an endgame. It's ridiculous, but it's there.

Though it is hilarious all the things they've come up with. The Anti-Moon, the Ice Wall, pseudolites....

Being a somewhat "sane" variant on a creationist I feel the need to explain the theory behind young earth "science"

God, when he created the world created it in a state of "in medias res" meaning that things were created pre-aged. Science says that the universe is trillions of years old. We know that light travels at a consistant speed, that rocks age a certain way.... But if you are creating it all from nothing there are no rules, in fact you are creating those rules. When god created the stars he created the light of those stars already in motion. When he created the earth he created it to start out being millions of years old. If you are telling a story do you start with nothing? explain the character's entire boring ordinary life? No! you start at the good bit!

Now we get to the reason... why?
Well that's simple. God created the world because he wants free will. If there was 100% undeniable evidence the the roles would be reversed, only the foolish idiots with no intelligence would be athists.... that's no free will at all it's just common sense. What god wants is someone who'll love him even if it's difficult and hard to do. otherwise the entire human race would be nothing but "fair weather friends" people who just want to go to heaven when they die or only think of him when they want him to do something.

Now, back to the topic...
I think flat earth people are either really stupid or they just think it for lulz.
If you could even present a single grain of evidence for that claim I'd consider taking the idea seriously....

By the way, the universe is estimated to be approximately 14 billion years old not trillions! That's the kind of mathematical error that makes people believe the world is 6000 years old...

Obviously, he was in on the conspiracy. Instead of measuring the earth, he invested his money into better and better computer technology to fake the images. You didn't know there were computers back then?

My dad said the Devil put the Dinosaur bones in the ground. I'm not sure if that's a popular theory or just a lone nut job.
Well, what did I say? "if there's a crazy idea..." ;)

Yeah, I've heard that one before. Though I think most Creatards of the Young Earth variety are the kind that believe The Flintstones is a documentary.
Yeah my dad is 'special'. I could a fill a page with the stuff he's said. I won't cause a lot of it crosses the line of racism and sexism. And by crossing the line I mean he shits on it and sets the line on fire. That is not a compliment. If you want to know what the most raciest/batshit insane religious thing he's ever said was PM me.

Young Earth...oh you mean those people who think the earth is like only a thousand years old?

There are also people who deny Germ Theory, that HIV causes AIDS, that man landed on the moon, that 19 arabs hijacked four planes and crashed three of them into buildings, that there was only one shooter in Dallas on that day in 1963, that man shares a common ancestor with apes, and that the Earth goes around the Sun.

If there's a crazy idea, there's a group that believes it. If there's some long-established fact, there's a group that denies it. If it exists, there's porn of it. Whatever you think of, there's a fetish for it. Just a few rules of the internet.
Bravo good sir and/or madam. You've successfully described the internet in a single paragraph. A feat i had previously believed impossible.

I tip my hat to you

they are all idiots HOW do they explain the fact that people on the Concorde saw the curvature of the earth or how do they explain the pictures of earth the Apollo astronauts took?
Also I wonder if they still keep believing this stuff when space travel becomes common place.

From the information I have collected, only around 50% of women have orgasms everytime. I also found that it takes circa 4 minutes for a woman to orgasm. Interestingly enough, the navel is an erogenous zone for both sexes. (I know you were being sarcastic).

That's stupid, we all know that the earth became a sphere after Galileo transformed into a satellite and went into space. The earth hasn't been flat since 1241! Trust me, I have proof....the satellite is up there still isn't it? >:U
