For those who feel that most cosplayers are shyte...

http://www.flickr.com/groups/dragoncon/pool/

I present to you: DragonCon, the worlds largest Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention (in the world, 'cause redundancy is awesome). Yeah, they're some crappy ones, but holy hell. I will go some day!

EDIT

That's... Kind of bad ass. =D

It just seems needy and desperate a 'look at me! look at me!' kind of thing. Begging people to stroke their ego. Especially, when it is done by girls showing a great deal of skin. (especially especially when the particular character DOESN'T) It seems like a shameless attempt to sexualize one's self. Kinda like someone acting skeezy and dancing 'sexy' in a bar during a very not sexy song.

Also, people tend to get body types wrong. If a character say, anyone from 300 is who you're emulating and your body type would more let you be... the bolder from indiana jones. Than you're doing it wrong.

I can only dislike cosplaying when it's done horribly wrong. When done right and perfect (in addition to just dressing up like the character they act like them.)
and maybe even this

ifrit vs piplup...fucking epic XD

I don't have any problem with cosplay. I see it as an art form like any other: when it's done well it gets attention and admiration, but when done badly it . . . doesn't.

Of course, I've never been to a convention or anything so I don't have any fat-people-in-tights horror stories but I still can't see a major downside to cosplay.

Actually, I can see one: people who get too into character, to the point where it's annoying and obnoxious. That would turn me away from it.

It's just costume party stuff with a more specific niche focus, so I don't see what there is to dislike. At my last Halloween party these three people came as the Prince and his Cousins, from Katamari Damacy - freakin' impressive costumes, best at the party. I've just never done it because it would be so damn expensive/time-consuming to do right.

I enjoy Cosplay, myself. When it isn't a fat, hairy male attempting to play a female character.. *shudder*, or crappy Western portrayals.

Most if not all Japanese cosplayers heavily photo-shop their pictures, so you can't fully go by them.

Cosplay isn't about nailing the perfect look of the character you are portraying, it's about having fun. Not everyone has the means to look perfect, but as a cosplayer, why should i care what critics think? I cosplay to express, not to impress.

Criticism is fine, but before you judge cosplayers and call them wannabes or trying-hards, make sure to imagine life on our shoes...

...If I were to summarize, I'd say it's because cosplaying seems to me like a disturbing level of indulgence that involves taking pastimes that are used primarily for sparking the imagination and creative interests and applying them waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more religiously than they should ever have the right to, especially as adults. It's generally an easy indicator of someone who has given themselves far too big a line away from their anchor, if you catch the none-too-subtle metaphor.

It's more the "Holy shit I thought we all graduated from High School and learned how to stop being so goddamn petty" factor.

The community surrounding it is ridiculous. The people who actually participate in it are by in large ridiculous. Honestly, just find a cosplay rage thread on the CGL board for 4chan. It'll explain it rather well.

Horrid community aside its the fact that most people have a general irreverence for someone else's IP. Basically when someone does a bad job they're taking someone else's blood sweat and tears and basically shoving it up their asses.

Because most of it is REALLY, REALLY crappy. I can't stress how horrible people look at some cons. A fat white guy cosplaying as Cloud does NOT LOOK GOOD. That's why I usually try to dress as something with authentic, easily obtained pieces that look good. So that's why I usually go as an Metal Gear Solid Guard. All you need is combat webbing, boots, a balaclava, and a rubber duck, since I can't bring a real gun.

Trying to find a gold in a pool of human excrements is what usually tends to happen when trying to find a decent cosplay. it's safe to say that the gold doesn't exist and move along to something else. If someone else does find gold, congrats.

not much glory in trying to portray something that you're not

Some are good....some are bad...some are so ugly they are good...and some are so ugly they are bad....300 pound sakura who is black...not fun. But considering I live in Seattle, a huge hodgepodge of Asian people, I see some great stuff, but you can tell the people who spent 6 months on it and those who spent 4 weeks.

I have seen some pretty decent ones constructed out of purely cardboard, duct tape and spray paint. A very good Alfonse (FMA...the guy in a suit of armor)... It worked well and its almost as if you couldn't tell the man was inside.

I don't hate cosplay, I just think it's slightly hilarious, but I'm all for people pursuing hobbies so go right ahead and keep cosplaying.
