For those who dislike cosplay...

I have a serious question to ask you.

Why?
What is it about cosplay you dislike?

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything like that; I'm honestly curious. I've heard a lot of people say that they think it's creepy and I've also heard people mention that it's only "retarded fangirls" that do it.
So, I'm not asking about the people that cosplay and why you dislike them. I'm asking what you don't like about cosplay itself, if there's anything.

In case you don't know, cosplay is basically dressing up as an anime or video game character.

Generally the kind of people who are cosplayers and the characters that they play. That's what turns me off for the most part.

Actually, I was at Video Games Live yesterday and the guy who won the cosplay contest dressed up as Earthworm Jim. All of the girls who dressed up in these elaborate JRPG character costumes or whatever were so disappointed.

This. This is why I hate cosplay.
DO YOU SEE WHAT FOUL WRATH YOU HAVE BROUGHT UPON US COSTUMED PLAY, DO YOU?! YOU HAVE DAMNED US ALL!

Okay, Okay, I'm joking - I don't have an issue with it. At all.
Personally, if you want to show devotion to a show/manga by dressing up like a character from it, go right ahead. Just do it well.

I think people find an issue with it because they feel it's 'weird' or 'strange.'

When, in all actuality, it's pretty much Halloween - minus scaring the hell out of infants[footnote]*Optional. I've seen some pretty scary ones in my time.[/footnote] and all of the candy.

While only discovering what cosplay is recently, I can't say I have a problem with it.

I actually think it's kinda sexy sometimes.

It's just when it's done bad...

It's fucking horrible...*shivers*

Yeah, uh, I second the bold. Some cosplays[footnote]See: Gorgeous woman above[/footnote] look phenomenal when done right.

That's the way I've always looked at it. And who doesn't love Halloween?

I dunno, I think its a bit fucked up. Especially the people that will only refer to themselves as the character name when they;re in the suit.

And most of the people that do it are fat and ugly (the internet is a liar). I passed by one convention on the way to a concert. It smelled like ass and I've never seen so many fatchicks in tights.

So yeah, Cosplay is a bit too far for me. For know, I'll continue my distance from it[footnote]Incidentally, that distance is about the length of my golfclub to the nearest colsplayer's face[/footnote]

I don't dislike it, I just don't get it. I fail to see the appeal of dressing up just to get attention...but then, I seem to be in the minority when it comes to the attention whoring department.

So....Let's leave cosplay to Japan.
I've been to comicon a couple times, some anime festivals(lots of big ones here in Calgary) and honestly, most of the people are overweight and have hair where they really shouldn't.
If you're ugly, don't do stuff to draw attention to your looks.
Why people can't get this through their head, I don't know.
It's why I don't cosplay, I'd look horrible in most. I know it, accept it, and spare people alot of eye surgery.(see above pictures of fat people)

Well 3 out of the 5 that have been posted are from America and they look fucking awesome.

The Rikku and Fran ones in particular.

But I will agree the Japanese ones are best.

I can only dislike cosplaying when it's done horribly wrong. When done right and perfect (in addition to just dressing up like the character they act like them.) you get stuff like this.

or this

and maybe even this

when done right, it's cool and fine, but when done wrong, it's horrible.

But I say, GO BIG OR GO HOME!

I don't really mind cosplay, not my cup of tea personally and the places where it occurs are generally kinda creepy but if you enjoy it have at it. I admit I find the stuff like the Sailor Moon cosplay earlier in the thread incredibly hilarious. I saw one pic of a guy who was at least 6' 3" and 250 pounds as Raspberyl from Disgaea 3, it was better then most professional cosplay on sheer humor value alone.

Yea i'd have to agree.

As for cosplay, i think its odd but it's no different than being in a play or something and well most the people i knew in drama were a bit different so whatever floats your boat.

Most people probably can't cosplay well, or are unattractive in some retrospect but thats really not the issue. If they have fun and its a passion on theirs by all means have fun. Just dont expect to see me at one.

However... if i had a sexy girlfriend... and she wanted to cosplay... i would do it in a heart beat. Its a win/win for both persons involved.
