That whole 'love and tolerance' thing is just as annoying as flaming, because it's complete bullshit. I don't hate the show, I don't give a fuck about the damned show, but they never get that. "You only dislike it because you've never seen it." Tolerance my arse.

Isn't the creator of the new MLP the one who made Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends? That show was the shit...

Now on the subject of MLP I would wish it to die down a little, seeing as so many flame wars start over the subject. I am not going to lie, I don't like it because of how silly it all seems and the fact that its ponies. I have tried watching it before you Bronies crucify me, and no I didn't like it. My best friend likes it and I make fun of him all the time, do I mean it? Nah. Bronies are fine by me. I just hope I can jump on the next fad.

'Know Your Meme' loses all its credibility by trying to be funny rather than informative.

You sure about that?

Anyway, sometimes I think the show's popularity is a response to the rampant cynicism and plain mean-spirited behavior that plagues the internet nowadays. Sometimes you just get sick and tired of dealing with asswipes and want to indulge in some innocent escapism (unless you're that loathsome subgroup of fans that have to despoil it with Rule 34 and grimdark fanfics like "Cupcakes"). It probably helps that the show has smooth animation, vibrant colors and surprisingly well-developed characters for a children's show.

But hey, if you gave FiM a chance and still don't like it, I don't have a problem with that. Different people have different tastes, after all. The only time it irks me is when people dismiss the show out of hand without even bothering to watch it because it's "girly" or "kiddie."

Firstly, 2 things I just like sharing on threads like these:

A bit of a rant ahead, sorry...

Now, I didn't start watching the show because it came from 4-chan. I didn't even know that the fandom originated in /co/ until I was already almost through the first season.

I watched it because I was recommended it from people on this site, and I haven't looked back. Why do I like it? The characters have depth (character flaws, growing as characters, etc.), it's colourful, it has a bit of adventure, it's simply fun.

If you don't like it, well, that's fine. If you don't like it without having even tried a few episodes, well, that's your perogative and is fine with me too. Trust me when I say that a lot of us are as sick of MLP being brought up in other threads as you (even though threads about MLP have, luckily, receded recently ^_^ ).

A bit more off-topic from here: Lauren Faust tried to create this show to disprove the fact that "girly automatically equals bad", and for all the restrictions that the show had placed on it so as to not be too dark for its target audience (some of the restrictions being very restricting in specific cases), I'd say she's done that.

What really surprises me is that people still believe that people mostly watch it for the irony, or to be a hipster watching something that most don't watch, or some other equally silly reason. But to be honest, I've never met a single other person who watches it for any of those reasons. I'm not saying those people don't exist, but they're an extremely small part of it. Everypony I've met simply enjoys watching the show - that's it.

More OT: Saw that video, it's pretty good. It does an okay job at explaining how it all started. ^_^
I doubt this'll get stickied though...

First off I just wanna say that the whole "Oh look, it's THIS thread again" deserves its own "Oh look, it's THIS post again." Seriously. We get it. People create this thread a lot. Thank you. Contribute to the discussion at your own leisure.

And secondly this whole movement is just meh to me. I take no sides.

Nice video, though. Ending was funny. :)

My problem with My Little Pony is that it's insanely popular when there are better kids cartoons out there. I mean, look at something like Adventure Time or Regular Show. Both of those shows are by far better executed than MLP and they aren't as "preachy" as MLP. They also can appeal to more than just kids, which MLP aimed for exclusively but also somehow hit the 4chan demographic.

Wow, Escapists are MAD.

All I'm gonna say is: If you actually tried the show and you didn't like it, that's cool. I respect you for having a mind of your own.

But is it really too much to ask for a reason why you hate/don't like it? Reading a shit ton of posts all generally implying outright hate for the show is really frustrating, especially for fans of the show (like me,) and ESPECIALLY without any reason why.

What is the appeal of the show? Is it a comedy? What exactly makes it watchable?
Same thing that makes everything watchable, dropping standards, and really, its watchable, the show doesn't have bad animation, voice acting or anything else, really. Its the gal that made Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, so it has the same type of smart to it. The humor isn't aimed at the little kiddie winks, its the cute that is, the humor is aimed at 20-somethings, and it works. Kids won't understand the humor, they'll just see the cute and thats ALL they'll understand.
There are some dark moments in the show too, like Fosters, every episode has a level of cute, and a level of seriousness. Some of the later episodes do reflect this... No, I haven't watched them, its the same women who made me fall in love with cartoon network, I liked that show because of its formula, silly thing here, premise of serious. Other then that, yeah, its very watchable as long as you drop shields.

Also, YAAY, A VIDEO THAT NAILED IT!

I'm not even a fan and even I'm perplexed at it, just a little bit weird, half the people are blindly hating, maybe even more, and then theres a few with a reason, then just more blindly hating. I don't think ponies are the fad / meme anymore, I think its the hate.

Escapist Community.... You scary sometimes like that.

MLP = 30 minutes.
Adventure time / Regular Show = 15 minutes.

I love Regular time to all hell, but its only 15 minutes, so very obviously, its harder to remember a episode because it has such a small time frame. Another thing is the timing of when it airs is all over the place, making it VERY hard to catch it and watch, again, its 15 minutes, and that makes it even more bloody difficult to catch. Its like Family Guy VS Robot Chicken, its a 15 minute show VS a 30 minute one, hell, Family Guy pokes a shit ton of fun at Robot Chicken over its 15 minutes. Its hard to catch a show that is half-half a hour of a hour.
And as I pointed out above, same lady who did Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, so I can imagine she has some hardcore followers even BEFORE the show launched. Regular Show and Adventure Time are 15 minutes, and they do have fans, but your not going to convert HARDCORE FANS to something, can't be done.
Its like trying to get someone who plays on 360 hardcore like to try PS3 or PC, it probably WON'T happen.

Indeed, nice bit of irony there.

OT: I don't have much of an opinion on the show, I watched the first episode and thought it was ok but I wasn't really interested in the show. I'm aware that there are probably way better episodes that would be much better to watch but the overall concept didn't draw me in and I didn't feel much for the characters. That's just me personally, it doesn't say anything about the show itself really, just that I didn't enjoy it... That was kinda off-topic but meh, it's popular so it's probably got something people like about it.

That gave a history of the show but it did nothing to explain the actual appeal of it. I've watched it and I just do not get it. Am I missing a huge joke? Do people just love them ironically?

Liking it just for irony is fucking stupid, and these are the people that I don't like. I have nothing against grown men liking a show that isn't aimed at them (Hell, I still enjoy playing with Lego the odd time), to each their own but to like something just for the ironic factor is stupid trolling and these people should be punished somehow (Nothing too serious of course, but at least made fun of or something).

And I can't understand why anybody would like the show based on the original toys, I remember my sister used to have a few of the toys and I always thought they were alful toys, they had not moving parts and the only purpose they ever had was to style the hair. My point here is the show must be really good to get such a big fan base, but the show looks pretty shitty if you ask me, but I've never actually seen an episode. However, it seems to me that this is one of these shows that is aimed at kids trying to teach them some sort of sigle life lesson (I'm guessing its along the lines of 'Friendship is great yada yada yada'), which is wrapped in meaningless events that take place each episode and is a message that grown people should already know, and can easily get from other, better, deeper sources of entertainment.

MLP:FIM's creator (Lauren Faust) wasn't the creator of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, but she did have a lot of involvement with it.

Lauren's husband, Craig McCracken, is the creator of Foster's (as well as The Powerpuff Girls).
