Of course mass murderers are obsessed with violent videogames. They're often obsessed with violence. Violent videogames, violent paintings, violent books, anything violent they can get they're hands on, and no, it is not "feeding" their obsession, the obsession is already bloody there.

They already won a lawsuit essentially stating they're not beholden to truth and are for novelty purposes only. I think a lawsuit would merely give them more fuel and waste our money.

It's just like the Megalodon "documentary" Discovery played last Shark Week. They play it off like they're super serious then at the end of the credits, they flash a screen saying that none of it was true.

The only difference is Megalodon needed a disclaimer.

The article seems more of there are people whom went on murdering spree who happen to play violent video games but there is no proof that there is a correlation between the two. Also the quotes given from the murderers showed that there were mental problems such as how Evan Ramsey didn't understand that people would die if you shoot them and he was in high school at the time. Plus why was he even able to gain access to a firearm?

Ramsey also had a seriously fucked up childhood. His dad even took a gun into a newspaper office and took hostages because they wouldn't publish his letter. If that's where you're getting your sense of right and wrong, what chance do you have?

But I think you're being a little too light on Fox News here. They went out of their way to front-load this article with a bunch of prejudicial quotes about a link between violent games and violence and only at the end did they acknowledge that there might be another side to the story.

Gaming's a young medium and the fuddy-duddies haven't gotten used to how quickly things have changed in the last fifty years. They'll latch onto something else at some point, and we'll all become their new pundits because the New Thing will become *our* catalyst for all of Society's evils. Comics are exempt because I suspect they'll come up in front of SCOTUS sooner rather than later because of any number of things, but mostly the whole "child pornography" thing. You know, kids who read manga getting busted for "kiddy porn?" Though to be fair, I haven't seen many stories on that recently....

Rap might also come up, because punk rap is nothing but death and crime and the rage of a BEAST!

It is, however, rather hilarious that most of their own viewership doesn't think video games have any relationship with violence in society. Almost like they're old enough to remember when this same line was trotted out for movies, and television, and books, and comics, and every other form of media capable of expressing violence.

What surprises me is that they haven't taken it down. FoxNews.com has a reputation for removing or doctoring unfavourable polls (most recent one I can think of is when a gun control poll didn't go their way, it was locked then suddenly had thousands more pro-gun votes on it. After being locked. This is common).

Fox News is a lot like WWE in that sense. The only difference is one is run by carnies and the other is a wrestling promotion.

While I agree that rulings can be changed it is much harder to change a precedent then it is to create one. Anyone trying to ban video games will have a significantly harder uphill battle.

The only way I can see the ruling changing is if someone brought it up about child pornography as you mentioned may happen with comics. Still I doubt it will change anything as I'm unaware of any provision in the constitution allowing for limits on rights. For example, Canada has a provision that allows the government to place a "reasonable limit" on any right in the interests of public safety. Its what allows for the strict hate speech laws in Canada. If such a thing exists in the US constitution than maybe there is a chance for anti-violent videogame people to get them banned.

Can't Rockstar, Activision etc sue the ass off Fox for defamation, lying to their audience etc? Or doesn't America have laws that require what you broadcast to millions of people not be full of bullshit?

The big thing about American law in this category is that by adding 'possibly' or 'some say', it turns it into a constitutionally protected opinion instead of blatant lies and libel. And this applies to statements from corporations because, and I'm not lying about this, a clerk wrote an opinion about a case that THE SUPREME COURT REFUSED TO HEAR.
