Not necessarily gritty and grim. They need to grow into a niche role. They can't just stay in the bland past as paragons with minor or petty problems. They need to be relatable in some way and they just aren't as is. The best they've been doing is introducing soap opera style drama and that just isn't a desirable niche. Probably why the comic book series is ending too.

Everyone is failing with this IP. Not just Fox.
The FF comic is ending for a different, more bureaucratic reason, which I'm not super pleased with but it's Marvels characters they can do what they want. The soap opera style drama really isn't as prevalent as you may think, in recent memory the story-lines have been about things like Reed's powers degrading in a way that might kill him so he takes his family on a jaunt across the multiverse while She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Medusa and Ms. Thing (it's weirder than it sounds) stayed on earth.

The niche the FF has is the family side of things and the scientific adventure into high concept sci-fi, which it still does and is still DOING with the Secret Wars tie-in (however that ends, the FF apparently aren't a unit any more since Torch is joining the Inhumans and Thing is joining the Guardians of the Galaxy). They have a niche and like I say there's one movie that did that niche really well: The Incredibles.

So it can be done, and it can be crazy successful. It's just that Fox isn't doing it.
