PlanetSide.

The worlds one and only MMOFPS.

Sure, it was a bit clunky in places, but the vision it showed and the community it fostered were unrivaled.

TF2, because it's so well balanced that anyone can win, and everyone's (largely) a good sport about things

Favorite series (probably former): Call Of Duty.
Here's why:
-Excellent gameplay mechanics
-Memorable set-pieces
-Good graphics
-Either it's IW or Treyarch, the campaign is always fast-paced and a real thrill.
But since I have no doubt that CoD won't really be good without West, Zampella, Alderman, Gigliotti... yes, I guess I'm waiting for a game by Respawn guys.
CoD is amazing on its own merits tbh. its awsome

Xbox live/PSN killed MW2 by sacrificing the story for multiplayer, whitch is frustrating because multiplayer is repetative and infuriating when you get the steryotyped american 10 year old siging songs through his mic

But whe the series was good, CoD2 + 4 the single player was really good.

OT: Halflife 2 is king of fps town :)

Modern Warfare 2 did not sacrifice anything - the campaign has always been pretty shor and there it was even shorter but it had coop.
I didn't even really play online and I enjoyed the hell out of that game.

Halo. I know it's a bit cliche, but let me explain. When you actually read the books (GASP! READING!) you see how deep the story is. You see the politics behind the genocidal actions of the Covenant, you see how the UNSC abducted 6 and 7 year olds and trained them to become super-soldiers and then did things like covering their bones in metal or injecting them with different serums to make them stronger, faster, and all around better than anyone else, killing or disabling about half of them in the process. When you read the books, you get ALOT of backstory. Trust me, if you haven't read them yet, do yourself a favor and get reading.
It doesn't really help the game if you need a book to explain everything in the story. The game should justify itself and not need to be explained.

OT: I guess Max Payne and Half-Life are tied for my favorite single-player shooters. The both have pretty deep story's and interesting ways of telling them - Half-Life's no-cutscene policy and Max Payne's stylized comic-cutscenes and Max's inner monologue. Plus, aside from carry a billion weapons and bullet-time (MP only (sadly)) they're pretty realistic. They use health bars, instead of MW's hide-behind-wall-while-blood-falls-off-face, and you can't so much bullets to the chest, even on medium.

As for multiplayer: TF2 wins that hands down. It's incredibly balanced and give you alot for silly fun.

The amount MW2 and COD4 answers are saddening.

Anyway, mine's System Shock 2. The atmosphere was spooky and fantastic, the RPG aspect was great too giving you loads of ways to play through it.

Any game which needs books made after it to give the story depth, doesn't have a good story.

Probably the Timesplitters games or the L4D games. And if it counts, S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call of Pripyat is one of my favourite 'sort of' shooters.

I have a ps3 and tried the killzone demo..... I just can't play a FPS w/ a playstation controller, it doesnt feel right. Same goes for computer FPS, it's not good for your wrists, plus it's like playing on easy when you 'point and click', and I don't understand how people can say asdw is how you are ment to play FPS games, it's just awkward. That being said, I think I would like killzone w/ a 360 controller.

The 'twiddling my thumbs' is more of a challenge, and I prefer more difficult and rewarding experience than paying $500 for a computer that is obsolete in a year. Oh wait, 500 is is a really small number..... lets go back (sorry if I'm being a troll) I bought a 360 for $300 5 years ago, I bought a computer for $800 3 years ago. Guess which I can play Metro 2033 on.

I ain't no Senators son. I wish I was, then I might be on a different band wagon. But as far as FPS go, I am a single player type who prefers the more ergonomically correct 360 controller than anything else (I say correct cause it's my opinion).

I don't think FPS games can be 'the best' for long, they all get old eventually, so I would say the best as of today (that I have played, and yes this is only my favorite few) would have to be:
Metro 2033
Modern Warfare 2
Aliens vs Predator
Halo ODST
Both controllers are the exact same. Seriously the only reason you'd like one over the other is if you're not use to the other. The whole " TEH 360 CONTROLLER IS BETTER FOR SHOOTERS LOLOLOL" is a pathetic argument probably made from the fact that there's really no positives to owning a 360.

It really is impossible to choose :)

For multiplayer, I feel like the changes recently to games to reward "personal achievements" has changed the way that people play for the worse. So when it comes to multiplayer, games back in the Counterstrike, TFC, Q3A and UT age win out for me (Particularly CS, because if you wanted to truly win, sometimes you had to sacrifice yourself for a team win. A kind of teamwork that's missing these days.)

For a hybrid, I'd love to say Deus Ex, but... as a "shooter", it's not that great. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was a much better shooter. It was great to feel your weapons increase from "Can't hit a barn" to "can't hit a barn door" :)

For atmosphere, I want to give the points to Metro-2033 which really built an amazing world... sadly the atmosphere and the "shooter" aspects were generally kept on other sides of plated glass. Sooo, here I'll throw it to... Hmm... Left 4 Dead, I guess. Nobody said that atmosphere couldn't be blind panic :) (EDIT: Actually, SWAT 4. Some of my favourite level design in those early levels. Especially the suburbian house. Really felt like you were a SWAT member, not a supersoldier.)

And For realism, Killzone takes it. It might not "be" realistic, but it "feels" realistic in a way that no other shooter has ever felt.

Oh, I missed story. Halo has a good story, but like Metro's atmosphere, the story and the gameplay are kept distances apart. Usually in different mediums (books and games). I can't give it to Half Life 2, because near the end of the core game, the plot loses focus. Portal might actually have the best story. It's a funny story, told largely through gameplay and fairly simplistic and short, but a good story.

Honourable mention: Prey, Half Life 2, Portal, Painkiller, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Rainbow Six: Raven Shield (Both R6 styles were great and playing Raven Shield multiplayer was unbeatable in the R6 world)

EDIT: Dishonourable Mention to Call of Duty. I enjoyed the games but they were far from "great shooters" in my opinion. linear, blocky level design, supersoldier syndrome and the worst of all, respawning enemies. CoD4 had everything a good shooter should have, but it felt like it only had one aspect per level.

Did I get the longest post? :)

I've got a few:

Halo: Combat Evolved

The first game in the series, and my favorite. Everything feels so perfect. The story takes place on a small scale and all the action happens on a personal level. You're never really taken out of the experience (although they don't do that HL2 thing where you never get to actually see your own face). The small assortment of weapons are pretty well-balanced (something that would be lost in later installments), the enemy AI still stands out as incredibly intelligent and human even today, the environments are varied and interesting (until they start being repeated), and all the different enemies look and behave in a completely unique manner. I think it's the most addictive and consistently fun FPS I've played, so all you haters can just shut up already.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect:

Probably the best local multiplayer FPS in the history of anything. Some people like the music in TS2 better, but the aiming in TS2 is messed up. Anyway, graphics, level design, humor, cool weapons... This game is the whole package. The campaign is really fun, too.

Team Fortress 2:

Fun game. Too bad I suck at it.

Farcry: Instincts:

Bad single player, but absolutely awesome multiplayer. Melee attacks are perfectly balanced with shooting, mapmaker kicks rear, the graphics are great and the shooting feels really crisp. Shame about that sucky campaign.

Deus Ex 2:

I just really like this game. So shut up again, you haters.

Even though I haven't played one in ages I would have to say unreal tournament, it just had something.

Unique guns and characters, I also had a blast while playing it.

the original Modern Warfare was one of my all time favorite Fpses. The pure range of different experiences...action...the awesome bomber mission (dialogue was fantastic) and the BRILLIANT sniper mission...it was just an intense experience.

Of course Portal has to be mentioned as well...I cant decide between these...there are others...its impossible to decide on a best one :\

No, I agree. I loved the first game, I can't remember much about it though. I thought the second one was no were near as good, I just didn't enjoy it.

I hated the guns, I remember I couldn't aim. I either shot from the hip and couldn't see the cross hairs or I aimed down the sight and couldn't see the enemies.

My favorite is Call of Duty. I loved the new one just as much as any. All of the campaigns are exciting and have replay value, the multiplayer is awesome(I know it might not be balanced but it's a hell of lot more fun than a lot of other online fps'), and spec ops was one of the most awesome things I've ever done on a video game.

Halo. Without it we wouldn't have a large number of FPS games; we wouldn't have the xbox 360 and because it's done so much for the FPS genre.

EDIT: As well as being my favorite game of all time and itself being truly awesome.

Ugh, there's a Search Bar for a reason.
On-topic, I'm playing heaps of CS:S and AvP2 at the moment, so far AvP2 and Timesplitters 2 are tied.

Alright, first of all, I want this to be a topic proper discussion, so flamers, trolls and fanboys, check your prejudices at the door.

With the recent hub-ub regarding MW2, and what seems to be the overall declining quality of both shooters and their fanbases, I mean to ask you what is your favourite FPS series (or game) and why.

I'll get the ball rolling with the Killzone series. To me, it is my favourite FPS series based on a number of factors:

- It has a very strong cast of villains, with a very impressive voice cast to back it up. The Helghast are visually impressive and intimidating, and as you delve into the universe, their history is fascinating, to the point where you wonder if the ISA are really the good guys in the story after all.

- The visuals of the latest installment are amazing. Many complained that the game felt too drab and grey, and while I do agree that seems to be more the norm than the exception these days, I'll argue that if there's a world suited for such visuals, it is indeed Helghan.

- Likewise, much has been said of the weapon handling. I take a very strong objection to such criticism, and believe it stems from the fact that we have been "spoiled" by most shooters. Having handled firearms, Killzone 2 is the only, I say again, the only game I have ever played that properly transmits what a cumbersome and "heavy" experience it really is to handle such weapons. It felt realistic, whereas in most shooters, the weapona handle as if they are made of balsa wood, and it never feels "just right".

And that's it.

Your choice?

I agree 100%. I love killzone, and the grey dull environments of Helgan where great in contrast with the bright shiney ISA ships.

Not to mention the ending (small spoiler) was actaully a good cliffhanger. I love the Killzone story it's one of the few FPS stories I actually like. The only let down with Killzone 2 (if you can call it one) is that there was no secondary fire like in the 1st game, I kinda missed having a shotgun on my rifle.

The only other FPS I enjoyed as much as Killzone was Resistance: Fall of Man. The first game was bleak shrouded in mistery with a tone of powerful opponents. The Chimera where so great in that game. Though i must say the sequel, although not awful, was lacking. The sense of hoplessness was gone, (or fading). And although the chimera where more realistic some of them just seemed abit silly.

Well thats just my view anyway.
