Long time gamer, a year off my Bachelors degree, 460 in my Leaving cert, 3 year girlfriend your right video games have fried my brain. In fact "Frumpy Mom" I think I'll drop out and go on a violent rampage praising Satan and eating small woodland creatures in ceramonial sacrifice because clearly I have been masking all this psychological trauma years of videogames have brought me.
I was going to have a rant but it occurs everybody here knows all this, I think ill go take a look at her blog.

All you have to do is ask any teacher about his or her students' critical thinking skills these days and you will hear a TORRENT of horror stories about kids who have lost the power to think.

Where do you think that's coming from? Right. TV, computers and video games.

"Lost the power to think"?

What, really?

Did you check that, you know, they can still BREATH?
Sorry about being really pedantic here but, breathing is a subconscious action, that you don't think about.

Try, they find a way to get out of bed and dressed on their own?

hey do you have a link for that TORRENT? I likes me some pirated horror stories. Why should anyone pay for horror? Guess we could all just read the ramblings of Frumpy mothers...that's pretty horrible...

But, hey, maybe you're right.

Maybe, if Albert Einstein had only been able to play video games when he was a youth, maybe he would have come up with that Unified Theory that all physicists hope to find instead of merely the Theory of Relativity.

You do know who Einstein is, right? The dude with the hair.

1. Einstien did poorly at school anyway in his youth
2. He did not play video games IN REAL LIFE, and did not come up with the Unified Theory, so hypothetically, you are as dumb as horsecrap by suggesting he didn't come up with the U.T. because he played video games...when he didn't play video games
3. Many gamers are avid physicists or mathmaticians
4. Do not patronise us. Gamer culture harbours many reclusive, intellegent types. We know full well who goddamn Einstien is. I bet you had to google einstein

Okay... Answer me this. I am a 15 year old boy Getting Grades B-A in subjects that I do in school. I am even writing my own Novel and hoping to get it published. So Video-games are ruining my life?

And by the way, Einstein was a bit of an asshole, cos he is responsible for MILLIONS of deaths by creating the theory which we used to make an Atomic Bomb, not only killing the Japanese, but the pilots who dropped it.

Oh, and for the record, kids have been mis-behaving since like the Fifties.
For someone who supposedly got good grades in school...you are kind of missing some basic historical facts.

Firstly: Einstein did not invent the atomic bomb. He pioneered theories in physics which, along side work done by 10-20 other scientists, lead to the invention of the atomic bomb. He DID write a letter to the president suggesting that such a device could be created, but only after he was pressured into it by the thought of the Nazis inventing such a device first.

Secondly: The theory of special and general relativity laid the basework for technologies that have saved more lives than any atomic bomb ever dropped ever could. Note: Japanese Causalities from both atomic bombs were roughly 160,000. A lot of people dead, yes...but its still smaller than a million by three degrees of magnitude. Also, 160,000 Japanese civilians dead is quite a BIT smaller than the projected casualties that would have been sustained by a mainland invasion by US forces...there were over 600,000 coffins and purple hearts that were made before the expected invasion would happen. And those were just those of OUR men that would die. Lets not eve think about the hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians who would have died in the panic, fighting, and of starvation. Back to my original point: Some technologies that special relativity and general reactivity manage are...well, your computer, phone, television, I-pod, internet connection, radiation treatment for cancer victims and other nice things like that.

Thirdly: This is arguable, but it is my personal belief that the only reason we haven't had a conventional world war since the end of WWII is because nuclear weapons prevent the major powers from making conventional attacks on one another. IMagine a world with no nukes. NO deterrent to massive Soviet invasions of Europe or America. No deterrent to WWIII. With nukes, WWIII would have extinguished all life on Earth...and it didn't happen. Without nukes, WWIII would have destroyed economies already dangling on the edge of total collapse, causing tens of millions to die in combat, or due to the general chaos of the world. The UN would have collapsed before it even started (Just as the League of Nations did in the 30s) and the world would have been plunged into yet another firestorm of hell and death.

Fourthly: The pilot of the Enola Gay, the bomber that dropped the weapon on Hiroshima, survived to the ripe old age of 92...so...um...yeah.

And if you're writing a novel, and its your first novel, be sure as hell to get some professional authors to help you read it through. I tried to publish my first novel and got my teeth kicked in by some brutal rejections. Cause...it...sucked. Which is not to say YOUR novel will suck, but still...first novels tend to be the weakest of any authors.

On topic: This woman is an idiot.

PS: Children have been misbehaving since the dawn of time, not since the 50s.

You know, there are worst things to be addicted to then gaming, food for example, you fat *****(I realize this is a bit of a cheap shot, but this ignorant fuck just insulted all of us under the guise of "being helpful to the community" better I just come out with it, so fuck you whatever your name is). Anything can be addictive, it's not necessarily the developers fault(sometimes it is, but is gaming really all that different then say, the movie industry?). Second of all, who the fuck are you to say video games are like crack, who the fuck to tell us what to do with our lives?. You people say that you're successful if you jump through hoops for 18 years and then get a job in politics(which is a hell of a lot more damaging to the human race then gaming is, it's also full of lies, deception, selfishness, greed and backstabbing) or medicine(which not only has 13 year old's hopped up on crack, but also manages to commit it's fair share of murder) or acting(which is an industry that depicts just as much juvenile, offensive, sexist, racist material as gaming, if not more). But you never complain about those things do you, know why?, you've watched movies, you've read books, being a doctor or politician makes a lot of money and is considered to be "doing the country a service", so it's socially acceptable, you've probably never in your life played a video game, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. I've met people who've improved their lives with WoW, to this day, some of the best stories and artistic design come from video games (Mass Effect, Jade Empire, The Darkness, Prince of Persia, God of War, Legend of Zelda. You do know what all that is correct?, no?, well then look it up and do some fucking research before you go on an ignorant hate speech and insult an entire art form and the people participating in it). I take offense to your downright incorrect and ignorant belief in the stereotype that all gamers are obese middle aged men living in their moms basement, why should I have any respect for you when you odiously show no respect for me?. Your only understanding of gaming is the offensive TV stereotype, so shut the fuck up, stop backhandedly insulting us, and don't criticize what you don't understand

P.S I find it ironic that she blames TV and gaming for the world's problems when she most likely got all her info on gaming from watching TV

Her illogical, poorly backed up arguments are doing bad things to my brain. People this overly judgemental (read: stupid) should be prevented from procreating.

[sub]On the plus side, she sounds like Michael Atkinson's dream partner...[/sub]

Out of interest does anyone know where there is a lot of (legitimate scientific) research based on what effect games have on children, or adults? I'd be interested in reading it, parhaps putting a reference list together of scientific studies which describe gaming, in either a possitive or negative light. At least then people could make up their own mind.

OP: Everyone is entitled to an opinion; unfortunately even if they are ignorant and inherently wrong.

There have been studies, but it takes a long time to figure out something as complex as human behavior, so everything thus-far has been...pretty inconclusive.

Erm, has it crossed anyone's mind that this could just be a simple matter of trolling?
But if it really is just a psycho mother trying to push her views onto people, I have a message for her:

Ok, lets see,

1. Video game addiction or alcohol/smoking addiction, for young people these days it's one or the other I wonder which is the more healthy option... and Mrs Fisher, which would you prefer YOUR children to have if you HAD to pick? People don't get low self esteem by choice, most get bullied in school or have problems at home, I for example was bullied back in primary school (elementary school to you) simply because I had a different accent after moving house when I was 10, that carried on for quite a few years. most people my age in the UK have alcohol and smoking problems simply because they're "part of the crowd" no matter what background they come from, I'm not, I'm not some Teenage Alcoholic, video games were my stress relif, you tell ME they were a bad thing.

2. and LOST the power to think? quite the opposite, I got straight A's and A*'s through my creative writing tests in English as a quote from my teacher "...has an excellent creative mind and can construct an immersive atmosphere to keep the readers attention throughout...". If you want someone to blame for brain dead adolescents then try all the gangster influences and "simple repetitive drone" music that is in mainstream chart music these days your generation had things like the Beatles as mainstream music and lets face it the guys were legends and played REAL music.

3. Times move on, it's that simple, I was brought up mostly by my mum and granny when I was young and they were strict and I've came out fine, I despise modern culture in the UK, the technology side of things is the LEAST of the problems today why not go rant on about some worthwhile topic like drugs or smoking or alcohol? since I'm sure you're going to mention the various deaths "related" to video games at some point, think about this, How many people have died DIRECTLY because of video games in the last 20 years, worldwide thought about it? good. Now think about how many people have died from direct use of alcohol, drugs, or driving?

4. And if any figure from history had a video games console magically beamed into their house from the future they wouldn't have played it, maybe to see what it does but they would have had it whisked off to a lab and ripped apart and today we would be years ahead in our technology. Give one to someone in the dark ages and gave them the correct equipment to use it (TV, power generator, etc.) they would call you a witch and burn you at the stake, then burn all the equipment at separate stakes or attempt drown it all and then today, the "Time Team" crew would have the find of the century.

this makes me laugh. all of the smartest kids in high school all played games. all the stupid ones didn't. the stupid ones smoke pot and cigs. Go to any engineering school and you will see mostly gamers. its a good time. the smart ones game.
Pretty sure its not just engineering these days, my school didn't have an engineering department and more than half my freshmen dorm (one of the largest freshmen dorms in the country) were playing guitar hero and smash brothers.

and the koreans kids were playing DotA... not a racist thing, but a real observation.

Man they played a lot of DotA. and online poker.

I'd prefer to be a devil-child with low self esteem, than a spiteful, ignorant middle-aged woman who describes herself as frumpy and probably has never played a game in her life and has nothing better to do than make these uninformed blogs.
