Oh, god, Frumpy Mom. I'm so sorry. I don't mean to offend you by being poor as dirt. I mean, what kind of person does my mother think she is, not taking me to Europe every fucking weekend? We're planning a tour of Italy, promise, but it'll be maybe a few years before we can scrape together the cash. My fault, sorry. It's those damn video games, I'm sure. It's just that with the Xbox 360 I already own and the Assassin's Creed II I also already own, I can kinda pretend for a while until I have some dough. Oh, god, what kind of child am I? I sat my mum down with a glass of wine the other night and used the devil-spawn video game to show her virtual Tuscany! Please forgive me! It's just that the Xbox is only about 200 bucks and even the specail edition of the game is 100, so that's what? 300 dollars, about? I can pay that today, to make me smile and feed myself with a little pretend adventure until we can afford the 2000 dollar airfare just to get there. But I'm sorry, I should just be a boring vegetable 'til we get to the 'Eternal City'. [/sarcasm]

...

My feelings on this can be summed up with two pictures and one sentence/question.

Seriously, why doesn't someone send this woman off to go hunting with Dick Cheney already?

ha ha...the dude with the hair....

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion I guess. Like my dad says, "Opinions are like butts-everyone's got one, and most of them stink."

Well, I know that there are people are addicted and what not, but it seems with my own friends that my 'self-esteem' seems to be rising out of the grave and I've been opening up.

Still can't talk to girls without stuttering, though, but that's what I've been like since...ever.

Still, addiction is addiction, it can be a problem, it may not be a problem, the only people that are a problem aren't the people that chat here. Why? Because we get off the game in order to type.

And if you don't get off the game to type, power to you because you have weird mad skillz

My laptop and my consoles are in the same room, which is small enough that I only need to lean to the right a bit to type while my game is paused. Of course, I rarely play my games, and even then, its usually a Pokemon game.

I've dealt with people like this before. I used to be a bike courier back in the day and there was an "Opinion" writer just like Fisher who hated us with a passion and suggested all kinds of asinine and ridiculous ways of dealing with the courier "problem." to which she recieved numerous "colourful" responses from couriers that did nothing more than fan the flames of her bullshit.

I haven't read everything about this story, but it seems eerily familiar to me. Going off on someone like this doesn't do anything but reinforce in their tiny little minds that if their comments caused such an uproar, then they must be RIGHT.

I'm not saying I'm the most eloquent writer or speaker in the world, but when that anti-courier hag suggested that we be made to ride in the space between the LRT tracks (subway), that was it for me and I wrote a very intelligent letter which of course never made it to print because I took her to task on all her crap, until I sent a copy of it to the editor and they ran it the next day.

The subject of bike messengers was DROPPED and never written about again. I'm not saying I'm some kind of hero, but my letter prompted a number of other letters from lawyers, architects etc. backing me up in the next day's letters section. Power of the pen indeed.

From what I've gleaned so far, this seems to be the same situation, with this (And I use this term VERY loosely) "Journalist" cherry picking whichever comments she wants, and leaving out the intellectual and logical ones. I'll have to read the whole thing, but stupidity gives me a rash and I'm all out of Calamine lotion, so it might have to wait.

Besides, Greg pretty much summed up my feelings on the subject and has a LOT of good points. Anecdotal evidence is NOT scientific proof, and opinion even less so.

If this... woman had done even a modicum of research she would discover to her horror that indeed there HAVE been peer reviewed studies on children and video games for over a decade, and there is NO mention of anything she suggests: http://www.gamestudies.org/0301/fromme/

This isn't surprising seeing as how she comes from Orange County and obviously has her head firmly wedged up her posterior just like all the other ineffectual soccer moms.

Unfortunately, she's not going away any time soon.

(Edit) As much as I hate to stoop to her level, I think she should be a little more concerned about her cake addiction than anything else. What a hypocrite. If I actually thought it would do any good I'd let her have it, but the point is already way moot.

I'd like to personally volunteer to fly to California and club this woman in the head with a +6 mace.
And then after the club-fest, I'd quote the greatest of all video game quotes, everyone say it with me:

"I'm here to kick ass and chew gum. And I'm all out of gum."
I'd bring along a +20 shirt of smiting [http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/unisex/gaming/7215/zoom/] just to be safe

she is stupid old hag who's stuck in 1800s when all they had to entertain themselves was sex or reading.

I say we prove this hag right and GTA her face in.
They also hit hoops with a stick, can't forget that favorite past time

Now as for her saying vidya games make us into thoughtless glassy eyed zombies that don;t have enough brain power to outwit a house fly (paraphrasing there) I started playing video games when I was 4-ish it's been a while, but my first system was the good old SNES, and roughly a year later (I think) we got this wonderful game caled Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest it was the first JRPG to ever grace america and since our japanese friends didn;t think american's had the mental capacity to handle a complex RPG (like the original final fantasy) that just ment it had a simple control scheme (which was good considering I was like 5) but it still had those big fancy words in it like oblivion and weakness, and you don't expect a five year old to understand those words now do you? I'm sure you don't but I did, in fact I could even follow the plot and knew that the snow crab was hurt more by fire magic and the large eyed tentacle monsters where weak against explosives, I even figured out how much HP the monsters had (which actually required math, it was before libra and scan were invented) hell I could even figure out how many more battles it would take for me to level up, hell my gaming like that is probably why I could actually read at grade level when I was in high school, and why I'm better at math then most (to further this point I hardly used a calculator through high school and I was in honors level math) anyway /rant

TL;DR vidya games don;t make you stupid, they do the opposite

Let's be honest here for a second. Do some people play WAAYY to many games? Yes. Have some people developed a problem because of their gaming habits? Yes. Do some gamers ignore their social lives and hygiene just to get in one more hour of leveling up? Damn right.

Is this lady completely crazy? You fuckin betcha.

(Truth snipped for space)
Y'know, I wish I'd read your post before I went off on my diatribe. Its nice when someone can sum up your feelings for you ahead of time. I still had a few other points to mention but you pretty much nailed it.

I salute you!

NEXT!

What...The...Fuck.

That is the most biased person i've ever seen. I have all the freedom that i want at my house, i choose when to go to bed, when to do my homework, when to get on and off the games, what music to listen to, what i watn to do.

I get to do all that with very little contest.

And guess what, im known as one of the smartest kids in my grade, i have a girlfriend and i spend plenty of time with her, i have done things like go white water rafting plenty of times, i get great grades, my self esteme is damned high, and i always talk to other people.

And if you saw me (not in my nerd cave) and didnt know me you wouldnt expect all that. I look like a football player even though i don't play, i just simply dont look like what you'd expect.

So, your frumpy mom.

you are wrong about everything and its all your fault, i read like 4 of her articles and she has WAY TOO MUCH FUCKING CONTROL.
