Well it doesn't seem she read my comments, but consider that a good portion of the responses written were almost as bad as what she was saying, and personally antagonistic to boot. Actually I think we blew an oppertunity since she actually read at least some of our responses which I never thought would happen.
That said, I still believe that she is wrong. Video games are simply the latest in a long line of boogie men, with the generation before ALWAYS blaming whatever the escapism of choice is for their young for their problems. Comic books, junk literature, and even Rock and Roll have all been targeted.
Frumpy, on the off chance that you read this, I would be very interested to hear what you think about the other things I mentioned. I'm not sure how old you are exactly, but I'd imagine when you were younger someone in a position of authority of you no doubt attacked something you were interested in as highly destructive, music if nothing else.
As society progresses, so do the tools people attempt to bring to bear against whatever they see as a problem. I mean back in the day there were all kinds of "experts" claiming that Hard Rock and Heavy Metal were brainwashing the youth, causing them to not care about anything, and underperform. Instead of doing homework JR. might be home banging his head to music that screams about all kinds of dark subject matter possibly including the devil himself (frankly true in this case, but if you follow it back far enough everyone from like Buddy Holly to The Beatles were griped at for the same stuff, there were even claims that the Beatles were Satanists before people like Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, or Alice Cooper took stuff like that and incorperated it into their act). Right now "experts" are setting up "addiction" treatments for video games. When I was coming up there were people setting up similar centers to "deprogram" kids from the influance of rock music (even if not as common). Such methods were promoted by claims like how if kids with problems aren't treated they would wind up committing suicide. New target, same speil basically.
I'll also be blunt in saying that the bottom line behind video games is Escapism (this site is called The Escapist for a reason). Reality simply put bites. Your pretty much singled out at an increasingly early age, and unless your a genius or something you get to look forward to falling into a rut for your entire life. You can't just "do well in school" and make all your dreams come true. That myth has been dead for a long time. Chances are if your destinued for success you have been kicked up a few notches or have people working to do it. What a kid does today in paticular doesn't matter, video games are just a form of escapism that would be replaced by something else if they aren't around. Maybe there are more people seeking heavy escapism than ever before, but our society is sicker than ever before, and sociologists saw the whole thing coming decades ago and told people "change these things or this will happen" people didn't want to modify society... so well here we are.
I probably don't articulate that well, and it is fairly nihlistic, but that is reality. Video games are simply a target for perceived problems with the youth, and what problems DO exist are much, much harder to deal with than to try and attack some form of pop culture. In fact no individual can do anything about them, you are powerless, and truthfully your likely to face a lot of scorn even trying to address some of the real issues (which is why they continue to exist).
Think of it this way, if your kid is sitting around playing video games he might annoy you to some extent, but it probably won't affect him falling into his rut later. The worst that is likely to happen is he'll live in your basement or whatever. Not good, but a lot of other people hit the streets with guns and figure "Ima gonna get rich or die trying". In fact there are ENTIRE subcultures based around that (mostly ethnic, and this is also why you see so many white kids trying to adapt those subcultures, mannerisms, and point of view).
