Oh, this is going hilariously

In other interviews he's whining about "they're letting Nancy Pelosi keep control" because the Clerk of the House is technically in charge until they seat new members, and the clerk was nominated by Pelosi. Mind you, all the clerk does is handle procedure

The funniest part is where neither McCarthy or Crenshaw have anything remotely resembling what could be called a policy

Most of the concession given by McCarthy to the larger group if GOP dissenters is just procedural points and nothing to do with policy

Turns out having a voting block of utter lunatics isn't particularly productive

Thought he was doing a Fallout cosplay for a hot second there 👀 As always with Peteyboi, the reality is exponentially more pathetic.

On a lighter note.

House Speaker vote update:

McCarthy has now lost the 5th speaker vote in a row (3 yesterday, 2 today). Democrats remain united behind Jeffries while McCarthy loses 1-2 votes per round. The Republican splinter group has switched from voting for Jordan (as a gag since Jordan supported McCarthy anyway) to voting for fellow House Freedom Caucus member Donalds. A 6th round of voting is apparently "imminent" after the results of the 5th are officially recorded.

5th vote results
  • Jeffries (D): 212
  • McCarthy (R): 201
  • Donalds (R): 20
  • Present: 1

CSPAN link to watch live if you're as bored as I am at work: https://www.c-span.org/video/?525146-1/gop-leader-kevin-mccarthy-appears-lose-ballot-speaker&live=

Edit: A fun point of trivia is that if the number of Republicans voting "Present" reaches 11 (with no increase in McCarthy support) then Democrats would theoretically win the vote despite not having a majority of members in the chamber.

Edit 2: Sixth vote in progress and McCarthy already does not have the votes required to win less than halfway through it. 12 Republicans against currently.

Edit 3: Sixth vote results identical to the 5th round above. Looks like they might recess for the rest of the day as Republicans meet internally.

Edit 4: 7th round of voting will take place at 8pm (ET) tonight

Edit 5: Coming back from recess, Republicans have passed a motion to adjourn until tomorrow over Democrat opposition. No 7th round vote tonight.

What power does house speaker have? Why is it noteworthy he's losing the vote? Why do they keep voting and over-riding/not abiding by the last vote?
The Speaker of the House is the top official of the US House of Representatives. They set the legislative calendar, decide the chair(wo)manship of the various committees, and are 2nd in line to succeed as President should something unforeseeable happen. They are (along with the Senate Majority Leader) in charge of what bills even make it to a vote in Congress.

The summary from wikipedia is "[t]he speaker is the political and parliamentary leader of the House and is simultaneously its presiding officer, de facto leader of the body's majority party, and the institution's administrative head."

Becoming speaker requires a majority * (not just plurality) of votes from members of the House. With the current House size set at 435 members, that means 218 votes are required. The Speaker has been decided in a single vote for all but 14 Congresses in US history. The most recent was in 1923 which took 9 votes, and the longest was in 1859 which took 44 votes over 8 weeks.

*This could be bypassed by agreement of the House. In some rare past Congresses, the House has agreed to let plurality decide. The other thing to note is that voting "Present" (or not being there to vote) actually lowers the "total vote" count; this means that for every 2 "Present" votes, the number of votes required to win decreases by 1.

The funny thing is that if they bypassed the need for the majority, then the democrats candidate would become speaker since they have more vote. Now I imagine that the republican would unite at that point, since the only thing defining someone with an R is that they are against democrat, but there is a slim chance that the democrat might retain the position, which would be pretty astonishing. Still, I imagine all the people who think republican are the adult in government are completely unaware of this mess or have somehow being told its the democrat fault somehow.

Fox News, at least, seems to be pushing the line that Republicans are making their own look stupid. Tucker Carlson being a lone exception there.

Murdoch is trying to rally the troops here. I wonder how long before Tucky Bucky changes his tune.

We've gone well past that. We're now in "they're against anyone who doesn't currently have Trump's dick in their mouth" territory.

You say that, but Trump called the holdouts and told them to just get in line behind McCarthy. They told him no, and touted it on the floor. They have unironically lost the script.

But it's important to know why they won't vote for McCarthy, what their plan is.

Give us what we want (crash the economy) or we're going to not vote for you (crashing the economy because the House can't do shit until this gets done).

It really comes down to that while McCarthy is fairly well-liked in the Republican party, no one actually loves him. He's fairly spineless and while he has bought into the MAGA nonsense since the beginning, he's never been an out-and-out zealot about the craziest aspects of it. He largely just comes across as milquetoast overall when compared to his fellow (R) representatives. With a significant minority of the Republican party becoming evermore radicalized, he finds himself being seen as a RINO despite his purely conservative positions. It also doesn't help that this is his third attempt at gaining the speakership, and this is the smallest majority ever for a party selecting a new speaker.

edit: Also, he apparently had a "friendly" exchange with Trump during the Jan 6 insurrection:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_McCarthy#Capitol_riot_and_reaction said:
It was reported on February 12, that McCarthy called Trump asking for help during the riot. Trump refused to send the National Guard, saying, "Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are." McCarthy responded, "Who the fuck do you think you are talking to?" This was reported to CNN by multiple Republican members of Congress, including Jaime Herrera Beutler and Anthony Gonzalez.[145]

As the article says, he won't support crashing the economy with no survivors. They don't have someone they want, they just don't want Kevin.
