Surely then you have evidence that all these prices went up last time he was president?

"In the wake of this increase in trade protection, the United States experienced substantial increases in the prices of intermediates and final goods, dramatic changes to its supply-chain network, reductions in availability of imported varieties, and the complete pass-through of the tariffs into domestic prices of imported goods. Therefore, the full incidence of the tariffs has fallen on domestic consumers and importers so far, and our estimates imply a reduction in aggregate US real income of $1.4 billion per month by the end of 2018."

So no evidence about prices going up on any of the stuff I asked about?

"The CTA estimated that laptop and tablet costs would go up 46%, smartphones would go up 26%, and video game consoles would spike 40%. That kind of increase would put the cost of the forthcoming PS5 Pro at just under $1,000. A top-of-the-line GPU, the kind used for AI and gaming, could bloat from around $900 to $1,300. The price of monitors would go up $109, desktops would go up around $74 overall, and headphones could cost an extra $35."

No one cares. You shouldn't rely on the generosity of strangers. People saw that yes, the working poor's income/min wage income went up, but not the people making above them. So they acted in their self-interest. Is it shitty to your fellow citizen yes, but the point is that people act in their self-interest.

Also, unions can't work either. They will just offshore your job. What can work is the government could, in theory, say if you offshore too many jobs, we will economically discriminate against you to a certain extent with high prices for your products due to offshoring taxes, but do that too often, and your companies become less dynamic against a cheaper labor country like China or any other country.

It's Joe over for American Labor.

Please don't move the goal posts. You asked if prices increased the last time he was president and proof was provided.

I didn't move any goal posts... I'm in IT, I'd think I'd remember tech prices going up (not counting the chip shortage with covid obviously).

Surely then you have evidence that all these prices went up last time he was president?

A better question might be why you expect IT to be uniquely exempt from the cost-rising effect of tariffs.

Most equipment that was targeted by the 2018 tariffs rose precipitously in cost, often between 10-30% according to that study. Laptops, consoles, monitors etc were not subject to tariffs then. That's why their cost didn't increase.

So what do you think will happen if they are subjected to tariffs?

Why would tech devices be subject to tariffs this time if they weren't last time? The US doesn't make such devices so why would they be tariffed in an effort to safeguard domestic production (that doesn't exist)?

Because that's what Trump has been saying he aims to do. He's argued for a 10-20% blanket tariff on all imports this time, rising to 60% for imports from China.

And you believe everything every politician says?
Your defence is just an assumption that he's lying, then? Got no defence of the proposal as given?

Kamala's plans were worse, I don't see you talking about those.
Just deflection. Trump is the President-elect. His plans are somewhat more relevant as of November 5th.

All politicians barely do any of the things they say. If I end up being wrong, then I'm wrong. I'm not going to worry about something that probably isn't gonna happen. It's like the fear mongering over JFK Jr and vaccines with his likely advisory role with the FDA, the FDA is not gonna get rid of vaccines, it's so fucking stupid. Remember the Biden administration influenced the FDA and forced 2 top officials to retire over that. But, orange man so evil!

Do you have a single post that you've criticized Harris' policies? They are laughably bad.

K. I'll take this as tacit acknowledgement that the plan he actually outlined would increase prices on those things if he follows through.

Also, on tariffs, he did follow through last time.

So just deflection then. Not even attempting to defend blanket tariffs anymore.

...but they would be under Trump's plan for his next administration.
Again, let me know when this actually happens. You know what I won't be doing? Buying tech devices before Trump gets to office because of something that probably won't happen. I did just buy a hard drive yesterday but that's due to having less than 100 gigs left on my main storage drive.

I love that the best defence of Trump's plan anyone can muster is "he might have been lying when he came up with it". Brimming with confidence!

You've never known a person that says a bunch of shit that they never do? Or just like any politician? I care about actions, not words. Also, Trump said he doesn't know anything about Project 2025 and you guys all say he's lying about it. Why aren't I allowed to say Trump is lying or he's not gonna do that and you guys can?

OK, judge him on his first-term actions with tariffs, then.

He said he'd introduce broad tariffs on dozens of specific industries. He did that. And their prices rose drastically.

Also, Trump said he doesn't know anything about Project 2025 and you guys all say he's lying about it. Why aren't I allowed to say Trump is lying or he's not gonna do that and you guys can?
Because we judge him by his actions. He just appointed one of the authors of Project 2025 to his cabinet.

I did in the 1st post, I said tech products didn't go up last time so I don't expect them to go up this time.

You do realize the Heritage Foundation was disappointed in how little Trump cared about their document during his 1st term right? Half the stuff you guys are complaining about aren't even in the damn document. A republican picking someone for a cabinet position that's a conservative and in that world that can involve the Heritage Foundation... complete shocker!!!
